1 UNIT PLAN Grade Level: Unit #: 3 Unit Name: Age of Revolutions 7 th Big Idea/Theme: During the Age of Revolutions, numerous political, social, and economic revolts occurred throughout the world. Culminating Assessment: 1) Students will create a to review all of the indicators. (details below) Unit Understanding(s) Students will understand that The French Revolution was influenced by the Enlightenment and the American Revolution. The Mexican and Haitian Revolutions differed in terms of leaders, time period, and European control. The Industrial Revolution led to urbanization, socialism, and mass production Acquisition of territory led to the spread of Nationalism throughout Europe. Unit Essential Question(s): How did the Enlightenment and the American Revolution influence the French Revolution? Why was the Third Estate upset with the French leadership prior to the revolution? How did the effects of the French Revolution lead to other independence movements? Why was there a desire for independence in various Latin American nations? How were the Latin American independence movements different? What were the major effects of the Industrial Revolution? How did the factors of production effect industrialization? Why did the population move from rural to urban areas? How did the new inventions, including interchangeable parts, and mass production change individuals lives? What was Napoleon s role in the spread of nationalism? How were nationalist movements across Europe different? 1
2 Students will know / Students will be able to Explain the causes and effects of the French Revolution and how the American Revolution influenced it. Describe King Louis XVI and his fall from power in France. Identify Napoleon Bonaparte and his rise to power in France. Compare the Mexican and Haitian Revolutions. Map the sequence of industrialization for the following nations: Great Britain, the rest of Europe, the United States, and Japan. Summarize how the societies changed from agricultural to industrial, which meant shifts in population. Identify the effects of population shifts on urban life. Explain how labor unions developed as a result of poor working conditions Identify the goals of the labor unions. Trace how mass production ended the cottage industry. Define unification of Germany and Italy and explain how they are examples of nationalism. Create a timeline highlighting key events from the late 1700 s to mid 1800 s.
