9 What is meant by Planning? Planning for ISO should cover four areas: (1) Environmental Aspects-Capture the significant impacts (2) Legal and Other Requirements-Ensure basic compliance to all national and local laws (3) Objectives and Targets- Should be consistent with the Environmental Policy (4) Management Programme- Structured plan for achieving set Objectives 9

10 Planning should focus on - Significant Aspects and Legal Issues What do we use? What do we waste? What could we harm? What are the risks? What are the laws? and which are the MOST IMPORTANT issues for us? 10

11 An environmental Aspect and it s environmental Impact Aspect- An element of an organizations activities, products or services that can interact with the environment. Impact- The effect of the aspect on the environment - harmful or beneficial. Example: Aspect: Spillage of dirty oils generated from maintenance activity. Impact: Soil pollution or if drained into drainage line, it will add to the pollution load on ETP. 11

Impact- The effect of the aspect on the environment - harmful or beneficial. Example: Aspect: Shifting of fully grown trees due to building expansion activity. Impact: Tree population is maintained and all benefits of trees are sustained. 12

27 ISO-14001: A business case for Cost Saving Cost of effluent treatment = Rs per cubic meter of effluent. (Approximately 3000m 3 /day is treated per day) i.e. Rs. 10,350/day or Rs lakhs/year) Rs. Operational control on leakage and spillage of oils, coolants in Machine Shops will reduce the pollution load on Main ETP and corresponding expense on effluent treatment will be saved. 29 ISO: Benefits of Improved Efficiency Environmental issues need to be managed and if not will cost us money! ISO:14001 System is a management tool for the same. Once again ISO:14001 can be summed up as Policy Company has said what it is going to do for environment protection Planning what to do and how to do it! Implement set it up so that it can be done! Check make sure its done right! Review change it when needed! 29
