2 Doctors who train other doctors are critical to developing and improving standards of care - they help shape the next generation of doctors and are important role models for medical students and doctors in training. Jointly organised by the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) and the Egyptian Committee for Pathology Training (ECPT), this two-day conference will share expertise, practical guidance and advice with those involved in the training, assessment and examination of trainees in the different disciplines of pathology and laboratory medicine (histopathology, microbiology, chemical pathology, haematology, transfusion medicine, virology and infectious diseases) in the Middle East and North Africa. 6 ROYAL COLLEGE OF PATHOLOGISTS The Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) is the professional membership organisation and standard setting body for the education, training and professional development of pathologists and Clinical Scientists in the United Kingdom and around the world. Our overall aim is to work with others internationally to raise the standards and quality of services delivered by medical laboratories through training, workforce development and professional leadership. Founded in 1962, the College has developed into a global multidisciplinary membership body. Approximately 20% of RCPath Fellows and members are based outside of the UK in more than 60 countries, working in hospitals, industry, laboratories, universities, international governmental and non-governmental organisations and ministries of health. The College also has overseas exam centres in ten countries: Hong Kong, India, Iraq, Jordan, Kurdistan, Kuwait, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. In addition, many of the College s UK members are involved in a diverse range of international projects, collaborations and exchange programmes. EGYPTIAN COMMITTEE FOR PATHOLOGY TRAINING The Egyptian Committee for Pathology Training (ECPT) was established in 2014 in order to support and enhance capacity in training, assessment and educational supervision in Pathology. ECPT is a national committee, comprising representatives from some of Egypt s major medical schools and training institutions. The Committee functions under the patronage of the Supreme Council of Universities of Egypt and is affiliated to the Egyptian Society of Pathology. The ECPT is working in partnership with the Royal College of Pathologists to develop Egypt s training programmes, qualifications, standards and practice in the pathology and laboratory medicine specialties. The Committee s initial work will focus on histopathology, with a view to expanding its programme to include other major disciplines of laboratory medicine over the coming years.
