Date of programme review 2019/ Educational aims of the programme The principal aims of the programme are (i) to equip Computer Science graduates with a critical understanding of IT in relation to legal issues and in relation to the applications of computer technology in legal and administrative domains, and (ii) to equip Computer Science graduates with knowledge of techniques of management. IT: to equip students with a critical understanding of computer forensics and cybercrime, and intelligent systems for legal and administrative applications, and to further develop their critical understanding of other, related areas of IT. Law: to equip students with a critical understanding of those areas of Law which are most relevant to Information Technology and to the work of IT professionals. Management: to equip students with a sound understanding of business management techniques used within industry, and/or to develop a critical understanding of management techniques for the evaluation, organisation, planning and monitoring of projects. Generic: to offer graduates opportunities to develop further analytical and practical transferable skills and prepare them to play a creative and leading role in the professional and research community; to develop students critical awareness and appreciation of the changing role of information technology in society and motivate them to pursue continual professional development and further research; to ensure that students acquire an understanding of their professional and ethical responsibilities and of the impact of computing technologies in a range of contexts. 17. Educational objectives of the programme/programme outcomes The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding and skills in the following areas: The programme provides a knowledge and understanding of the following: 1. It Law for IT Professionals 2. Intelligent Systems for Legal and Administrative Applications 3. Computer Forensics and Cybercrime 4. Project Management and/or Industrial Business Management 5. Three or four further topic areas in Computer Science Knowledge and understanding Lectures, tutorials and (where appropriate) laboratory work, supported by course notes and academic textbooks as appropriate. Dissertation work. Assessment: Written examinations and/or coursework. Dissertation. 2

3 6. Ethical issues within the fields of computing, IT law and management Skills and other attributes Intellectual skills: 1. Plan, conduct and report on an individual project. 2. Analyse conceptual, logical and IT issues involved in the design of decision support systems for legal and administrative applications. 3. Critically evaluate issues pertaining to Computer Forensics and CybercrimeDevelop a critical appreciation of legal issues pertaining to IT, and the work of IT professionals. 4. Develop a critical appreciation of issues in Project Management and/or Industrial Business Management. Practical skills: 1. Assessment of IT solutions to legal and administrative problems, including design of decision support/knowledge-based systems. 2. Use of computational tools. 3. Effective use of IT-related legal literature. 4. Industrial business management skills and/or project management skills. 1. is developed primarily through supervised dissertation work. The other skills are developed through lectures and, where appropriate, coursework and/or laboratory work. Assessment: 1. is assessed in relation to the dissertation. The other skills are assessed through written examinations and/or coursework. Lectures and, where appropriate, coursework or laboratory exercises or case studies. Assessment: through written examinations and/or coursework. Project dissertation. Generic/transferable skills: 1. Conceptual analysis and argumentation skills. 2. Learning skills for use in continuing professional development. 2, 3, and 5 are achieved primarily through supervised project work. The others are developed through the lectures, coursework and laboratory sessions involved in the taught modules. Assessment: 2., 3, and 5 are assessed through the project presentation and dissertation. The others are assessed through examinations and, where appropriate, coursework and laboratory work. 3

(a). numbers of introductory, core, compulsory and optional modules to be taken in each year of the programme with related credit values: Individual project (60 credits) is core for MSc; four compulsory modules (15 credits each); four optional modules (15 credits each). Full-time students will ordinarily take 4 of the eight taught and examined modules in the first term and four in the second term, or three in the first term and five in the second term, or five in the first term and three in the second term. (a) range of credit levels permitted within the programme: level 7 (b) maximum number of credits permitted at the lowest level: None (c) minimum number of credits required at the highest level: 180 (d) progression and award requirements (if different from the standard): The award of the MSc degree is conditional on the student satisfying the credit framework requirements for the award. In addition, to be awarded the MSc in Computer, IT Law and Management a student must pass 90 credits worth of taught modules (e) maximum number of credits permitted with a condoned fail (core modules excluded): 30 credits at level 7 with a condoned (Masters) fail mark permitted, individual project excluded. Neither may a student enrol for a module 4

5 that overlaps with another module that the student has already taken and passed. Modules will be deemed to overlap if both the content and the level of complexity of the two modules are similar. The affected module will be replaced by an appropriate alternative following the guidance of an appropriate academic, usually the programme leader. 5

6 20. Marking criteria: the marking follows the College generic criteria and additionally those of the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences. All modules will be marked in accordance with the Faculty s marking criteria where such exist, or else in accordance with the College s generic marking criteria. 6
