V Clarke Subject Focus Textiles Technology homework Introduction to project Task & product analysis Specification & customer profile Product & Shop Analysis To gain an understanding of To complete research and Choose a suitable customer and To learn about the importance textiles, requirements of the carry out a task analysis consider their needs of a shop analysis project, health & safety rules Hand out folders & label Health & safety discussion, recap of room & equipment Explain how design work is to be set out Intro to project and discussion of skills: pupils will create a tote bag with a screen printed design on it Research themes & existing products (using magazines) Begin making a moodboard Q&A, group discussion, feedback, quiz, pupils add to dictionary at the back of their sketchbooks Continue finding images to add to the moodboard Analyse existing products and consider the positive and negative aspects Pupils complete moodboard with images collected for homework Group discussion of task analysis Product analysis: pupils analyse examples of other tote bags Group discussion, mood board, add to dictionary, pupils analyse independently & then discuss thoughts Find 6 images of suitable themes which could be used as inspiration To record a specification detailing the requirements of the project Pupils stick the images that they collected for their homework into their sketchbooks and annotate the themes Once pupils have chosen a theme, they consider their customer profile (create as a mind map) Pupils then use ACCESS FM to detail a specification Group discussion, pupils present their ideas for the beginning stages of the project, analysis of ACCESS FM Make a list of favourite shops for buying bags from To utilise the ICT facilities in order to research existing products Explain the importance of a shop analysis and looking at existing products in order to see where there is a niche Discuss how this will affect their designing Pupils use the computers to research existing bags online: price them and include info about the design features and any modifications they would make to them Research completed online, discussions, feedback via whiteboard, pupils present their info at the end of the lesson Visit a shop & do another analysis

3 Fabric analysis & tie dye Paper pattern cutting Textile techniques Sewing machine Identify a range of materials Demonstrate knowledge of and their properties textile techniques Understand the method for tie dying material Pupils will analyse a range of materials Pupils will analyse the different types of materials which are used to make bags with and will understand why we are using calico for this project Towards the end of the lesson, demonstrate the method of tie dying and explain the origins Pupils take notes in order to prepare themselves for writing instructions for tie dying Pupils screen print & tie dye Learn how to create paper patterns and understand the importance of doing so Utilise your patterns in order to accurately cut fabric Dem paper patterns (pre-made ones will be available) explain seam allowances Pupils will be guided to follow the same pattern in order to make their tote bag Pupils cut their paper pattern, pin to fabric and accurately cut calico for the bag and handles Pupils begin recording practical tasks completed in lessons in their production storyboard Pupils screen print & tie dye Pupils complete several tasks: screen print sample tie dye sample cut stencil for their final design which will be placed on their calico cut for the tote bag complete more stages in the production storyboard finish instructions for tie dying and Understand how to safely and accurately thread up and use the sewing machine Demonstrate ability to use a range of different stitches Dem how to use the sewing machine: pupils can sit in pairs and thread up the sewing machine Dem a range of hand stitches which can be used as part of the embellishments on their bags: pupils complete a range of samples by hand and on the sewing machine Pupils continue to screen print their designs on to the tote bag Peer assess their samples: what makes a good screen print? Analysis of materials, group work, recording of ideas Research man-made and natural fabrics and bring in swatches if they have any Dem, Q&A, pair work, visual instructions, templates available, production storyboard Research paper patterns: importance and development of paper patterns in textiles Production storyboard, samples, Q&A, observation of individual pupils completing different tasks Dem and Q&A, pupils work in pairs and support each other, peer assess samples, record their knowledge in production storyboard

Pupils record modifications on a modifications page in their sketchbook Pupils are expected to use these lessons to complete their bag Dem how to create and attach suitable handles and a pocket Dem, Q&A, reflection, learning log, modifications Research other decorative techniques in order to complete them at school Complete the construction of your bag and test that it is a functional product Pupils have their last chance to complete their product and make modifications They will show it to possible target customers (other pupils in the class) Extension tasks: Price up their bags and attach labels if they have designed them. Think about how and where they would market their product Modifications made, peer assessment & group moderation, complete learning logs, extension work Create a label and marketing campaign for their bag Pupils peer & self assess work Evaluate their success at completing the bag against their specification Complete their production storyboard and any other outstanding work in their sketchbooks Take photos and add to the bus stop advert Give out questionnaire about Fashion Design and GCSE Textiles Peer assessment, production storyboard, analysis of skills and progress made, consideration of future projects, discussion, quiz to consolidate understanding of textiles
