Software Defined Networking Seminar Introduction Winter Term 2016 Prof. Dr. David Hausheer PS Peer-to-Peer Systems Engineering Prof Dr. David Hausheer Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology TUD Technische Universität Darmstadt Rundeturmstr. 10, D Darmstadt, Germany Tel , Fax
Organization 1/2 Assignment of Topics Apply at until the Details are on how to do that provided at the last slide Seminar Plan Submission Around one month after assignment the first mandatory submission is required! The plan includes: Planned references to be discussed Preliminary structure of your submission At least one summary of a paper! Important Dates Kickoff Presentation: , 15:00, Room 5/6 Topic registration Deadline: Submission of Seminar Planning: Intermediate submission (no grading): Final paper/slides submission due: Presentation: Date to be done All dates are mandatory and denote 23:59:59 CEST of the day!
Organization 2/2 Paper Submission & Presentation pages paper (PS Template) Around 30 minutes presentation + 15 minutes of discussion (preliminary) Follow guidelines: Language Paper: English or German Presentation: Slides should be English, language depends on participants Important Dates Kickoff Presentation: , 15:00, Room 5/6 Topic registration Deadline: Submission of Seminar Planning: Intermediate submission (no grading): Final paper/slides submission due: Presentation: Date to be done Warning: Plagiators will be prosecuted! All dates are mandatory and denote 23:59:59 CEST of the day!
The SDN Concept illustrated with OpenFlow A traditional network is a completely distributed system Information are shared by using purpose-specific protocols Each device has to implement all protocols Complicated & error-prone Often not needed Example: OSPF Ensures every router has a complete view on the network
Software-Defined Networking Abstract concept Separation of control and data plane Logically centralized control of the network infrastructure Two planes, different objectives Control plane: Network topology discovery Network-wide traffic management Data plane: Controller Control Protocol Control Plane Line-speed data forwarding/ switching/routing Switch data Switch Do as much in hardware as possible Data Plane
OpenFlow Overview OpenFlow defines the standard communication protocol between network switch and controller Control Plane A number of vendors already sell OpenFlow-enabled network switches (e.g. Cisco, HP, IBM, NEC) Protocol specification: Numerous controller frameworks available: ONOS, Ryu OpenDaylight, NOX, Trema, Floodlight, etc. Data Plane Picture source: [1]
Seminar Topics Detailed description is available on our web site References to get a first overview of the topic are listed there as well What is important for topic selection? Interesting topic (obviously) Is your background knowledge sufficient? Example: SDN topics require a good knowledge on computer networks Are groups allowed? For registration Name of the supervisor Topic name
Overview of Topics 1. Classification of SDN Forwarding Mechanisms (JB) 2. Network Load Prediction based on Online Social Media Events (CK) 3. Popularity-sensitive Network Caching of Multimedia Content (CK) 4. The Interplay between SDN-based Routing and Caching (CK) 5. Predictive Prefetching of Videos on End User Devices (CK) 6. Network Optimization using Artificial Intelligence (CK)
Classification of SDN Forwarding Mechanisms The state of SDN research Many new forwarding mechanisms are developed Most approaches have different goals and application domains However, the basic concepts are often quite similar. Classification of SDN research A first classification of SDN forwarding mechanisms is currently being worked on Use this as a starting point and expand it to cover more mechanism and improve the classification Applicable for: Single student, multiple times Supervisor: Jeremias Blendin
Network Load Prediction based on Online Social Media Events The state of research Popularity of content after celebrity posts, e.g. on Twitter Regression-approaches of popularity evolution over time Give an state-of-the-art overview Some literature is provided Search for further literature and create a classification scheme Describe novel literature and group similar papers Applicable for: Single student Supervisor: Christian Koch 10
Popularity-sensitive Network Caching of Multimedia Content The state of research Knowing content popularity behavior in advance helps to keep a high cache hit rate while decreasing the number of cache evictions Eviction means hard drive I/O and should be kept low. Give an state-of-the-art overview Some literature is provided Search for further literature and create a classification scheme Describe novel literature and group similar papers Applicable for: Single student Supervisor: Christian Koch 11
The Interplay between SDN-based Routing and Caching The state of research SDN can be used for Cache Performance Optimization When a cache cannot provide a requested item, it redirects to a cache that potentially holds the content. Here SDN may bring new opportunities. SDN can also be used to configure Cache Hierarchies dynamically to increase the cache system s overall performance. Give an state-of-the-art overview Some literature is provided Search for further literature and create a classification scheme Describe novel literature and group similar papers Applicable for: Single student Supervisor: Christian Koch 12
Predictive Prefetching of Videos on End User Devices The state of research Load interesting content on a user s smartphone in advance, e.g. if WiFi is available. Set-top boxes know your TV-watching behavior and load episodes on your device, e.g. over night when traffic is cheap. Give an state-of-the-art overview Some literature is provided Search for further literature and create a classification scheme Describe novel literature and group similar papers Applicable for: Single student Supervisor: Christian Koch 13
Network Optimization using Artificial Intelligence The state of research Routing by using, e.g. Neural Networks or Reinforcement Learning Allows identification of optimal routing paths for certain situations or traffic classes Give an state-of-the-art overview Some literature is provided Search for further literature and create a classification scheme Describe novel literature and group similar papers Applicable for: Single student Supervisor: Christian Koch 14
SDN Seminar Tasks and Requirements General Goals Familiarize yourself with the given scientific topic by reading papers Train your scientific working skills Help your advisor to understand the current state of research Tasks Read the given literature (just reading, no design or development) Find other papers that are relevant for the given topic Describe the relevant findings and structure them in a meaningful way Scientific Working Style Write clearly and easy to read Contribute every idea and/or text clearly to the original authors Plagiarism will not be tolerated For additional support refer to the TUD Online Writing Lab:
Organization: Overview Assignments of Topics to: Deadline: Select 2 topics and name the priority for each topic (topic name, advisor, priority) Describe why you think the topic is suitable for you in ½ page per topic Your supervisor will to contact you. Seminar paper (DE/EN) pages, our template: Final presentation Time and place will be announced 30 min. talk + 15 min. discussion Participation in all talks is mandatory!
