2 Emergency Care and Injury Management Campaign Delivered in collaboration with Department of Fire and Emergency Services, St John Ambulance and the WA Regional Police our workshops scheduled for February were delivered in Esperance, Ravensthorpe and Lake Grace. The workshops were conducted as a set of interactive skill stations, each lead by the different emergency services. Participants acquired the knowledge and skills in topics such as practical first aid, responding to and managing emergency situations, emergency preparedness and the role these key organisations play in the community. Attendance numbers proved very positive which was mainly due to the support of local community businesses, project partners and supporters, coupled with a strong media campaign. Show bags full of relevant resources from the project partners were provided to all attendees including a complimentary 6 month membership to Farmsafe WA Alliance and a free snake bite kit, compliments of Farmsafe WA and St John Ambulance. 3 The Safety of Young People in Agriculture Campaign Developed in partnership with St John Ambulance, School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA), Kidsafe WA, WA Regional Police and WFI, this initiative targeted children in upper primary school environments and involved the coordination and delivery of a series of workshops at Esperance, Ravensthorpe, Albany, Mt Barker, Kojonup, Katanning and Williams schools. The workshops were structured as four interactive skill stations led by our partners mentioned above and Farmsafe WA with the primary aim to increase awareness and education of the hazards and risks associated with living on, visiting and/or engaging in activities on rural properties. In addition, students also received information on how to respond to and best cope with emergency situations. Parents, caregivers and teachers were encouraged to attend so that key messages can be reinforced in the home and school environments. Acknowledgements and thanks goes to our collaborative partners as without their expertise and support, these workshops would not have been possible: Paul Gaughan Community Paramedic Esperance Wendy Robertson Esperance St John Ambulance Volunteer Helen Laycock First Aid Trainer Ravensthorpe Ewen Hill First Aid Trainer Albany Heather Malacari First Aid Trainer Albany Sonia Huggins Community Paramedic Katanning Meg Strickland Williams St John Ambulance Volunteer Duncan Swadkins Sergeant WA Regional Police Esperance Steve Newman Constable WA Regional Police Esperance Allan Spicer Sergeant WA Regional Police Ravensthorpe Warren Jacobs Constable WA Regional Police Albany Alan Somerville Senior Constable WA Regional Police Mt Barker David Moore Sergeant WA Regional Police Kojonup Mitchell Kirk Constable WA Regional Police Katanning Aaron Biggs Constable WA Regional Police Katanning Jessica Richards Project Officer Kidsafe WA Katherine Celenza Senior Project Offcier Kidsafe WA Jill Fitzpatrick SDERA Regional Consultant Ann Rintoul SDERA Regional Consultant Cleo Martin Bruce Jones Darrell Panizza Andrew Rogers Steve Williams Mark Regan Also a huge thanks goes to the participating schools and their Principals, who have been so supportive throughout the campaign: Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School Esperance Primary School Ravensthorpe District High School Lake King Primary School Albany Primary School Mt Barker Community College Kojonup District High School St Bernard s Catholic Primary School Katanning Primary School Williams Primary School Wandering Primary School The Safety of Young People in Agriculture Project is an initiative of Farmsafe WA Alliance and is funded by the Department of Health, Western Australia and supported by the St John Ambulance, School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA), Kidsafe WA and the WA Regional Police.

4 Alcohol and Drug Education, Awareness and Prevention Project Supported and funded by Healthway, Farmsafe WA along with key collaborative partners, are piloting a new initiative to ultimately reduce the number of alcohol and drug related injuries that currently occur in our regional areas. The first forum of this pilot campaign is being conducted on the 10th April, in which year 10 and 11 students at the College will participate in an engaging workshop which will educate them on important factors relating to alcohol and drug use. The workshop will be structured with interactive stations delivered in partnership with School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA), Paraplegic Benefit Fund (PBF), Great Southern Community Drug Service, St John Ambulance, the WA Regional Police and Farmsafe WA. This workshop will also include a Personal story presentation from Paraplegic Benefit Fund. Following the April workshop, the students will be able to use this information during some structured in-class time throughout the year to develop presentations which display their learning's in relation to the topic of alcohol and drugs. These presentations will be displayed at the colleges Open Day on 7th September. Staff at the college will also receive professional development support from SDERA to assist them in dealing with any alcohol and drug related issues during the project. For more information on this project, please contact Farmsafe WA on or visit the website For more information on the WA College of Agriculture Denmark Open Day, visit their website or call The Alcohol and Drug Education, Awareness and Prevention Project is an initiative of Farmsafe WA Alliance and is funded by Healthway and supported by School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA), Paraplegic Benefit Fund, Great Southern Community Drug Service, WA Regional Police and St John Ambulance. Promotion and Distribution of Resources Project The Promotion and Distribution of Resources project targets farming and rural community members as well as Health Professionals in the Great Southern region. It focuses on promoting, distributing and evaluating three farm health and safety resources in particular, which have been produced by the Australian Centre for Agricultural Health and Safety (AgHealth). The resources in question are: Farm Health and Safety Toolkit for Rural General Practices The Great Idea Bank Preventing Falls in Older Farmers Farmsafe WA Alliance is seeking the support of community members and Health Professionals in the Great Southern region, who we are asking to review these resources and provide us with feedback via a short questionnaire. For ease of completion, the questionnaires are mostly tick-box questions and take less than 5 minutes to fill out. Participating in this project will simply involve having the resources sent to you to review, using the resources as you see fit and completing and returning the questionnaire form to Farmsafe WA Alliance. Please call us on if you would like to review the resources. The Promotion & Distribution of Resources Project is an initiative of Farmsafe WA Alliance and is funded by the Department of Health, Western Australia and supported by the Australian Centre for Agricultural Health and Safety.

5 Worlds Greatest Shave OVER the last couple of years I ve watched a number of people fight the battle with leukaemia. Five years ago I was a bone-marrow donor. Last year I took part in The World s Greatest Shave and I ve decided to do it again. It s well worth doing. To help fight this disease or help those who have it. All funds raised will help research into leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood disorders. Please consider a contribution to what is a very worthy cause by donating at and helping me reach my target. Yours sincerely Ian Blayney MLA Member for Geraldton DID YOU KNOW? When a Total Fire Ban (TFB) is declared, it is illegal to do anything that is likely to start a fire St John Ambulance generates funds through the provision of ambulance services and other business activities such as industrial paramedical services and first aid training During the February 2011 bushfires in the Perth Hills, 81 homes that were damaged did not have a properly prepared building protection plan RFDS Doctors accompany around 150 retrievals a year via the RAC Rescue Helicopter The St John Ambulance Association was established in England in the 19 th century by the British Order of St John The RFDS has a blood fridge at Jandakot and keeps blood stocks on site to take to acutely bleeding patients Major Supporters of Farmsafe WA Alliance
