1 SAFETY AND EMISSIONS RECALL GENERATOR #47 EU2000i PORTABLE GENERATOR FUEL TUBE LEAK In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the California Air Resources Board, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. is conducting a safety and voluntary emissions recall of certain Honda EU2000i portable generators. SYMPTOM Affected generators may have an improperly positioned fuel tube clamp at the fuel tank outlet. The tabs of the improperly positioned fuel tube clamp could wear into an adjacent fuel tube causing a fuel leak. Leaking fuel can increase the risk of a fire. AFFECTED UNITS MODEL START SERIAL NUMBER END SERIAL NUMBER EU2000i EAAJ EAAJ Note: This recall affects all model types within the affected serial number range. CORRECTIVE ACTION New affected units: Inspect and, if necessary, rotate the fuel tube clamp at the fuel tank outlet so the tabs face forward (toward the front cover) away from fuel tube B. See Fuel Tube Inspection on page 3 Used affected units: Inspect fuel tube B in the clamp contact area and replace fuel tube B if the clamp is touching it. See Fuel Tube Replacement on page 4. Fuel could leak from the fuel tube located between the fuel valve and the fuel pump. CONSUMER INFORMATION: The information in this service bulletin is intended for use only by skilled technicians who have the proper tools, equipment, and training to correctly and safely service and repair your Honda power equipment. These procedures should not be attempted by do-it-yourselfers, and you should not assume that this bulletin applies to your equipment, or that your equipment has the condition described. 2 According to federal law, any affected units in your new or used inventory cannot be sold until they are inspected and repaired if necessary. New units in dealer inventory: All new units within the affected serial number range in dealer inventory must have the fuel tube clamp position inspected and adjusted if necessary prior to retail delivery. Follow the Fuel Tube Inspection procedure on all affected units. Used units: All used units within the affected serial number range must have the fuel tank outlet tube clamp position inspected and if necessary adjusted. If the clamp is touching fuel tube B, fuel tube B must be replaced. Follow the Fuel Tube Replacement procedure (page 4) on all affected units. Registered units: Registered owners of potentially affected generators will be directly notified by American Honda and asked to arrange to have the fuel tube inspected and replaced if necessary. A copy of the letter is located at the end of this bulletin. If you have sold but not yet registered any units within the affected serial number range, please register them immediately. You must also contact those customers directly to notify them of the recall and ask that they check the generator serial number and, if necessary, arrange to have the unit inspected and/or repaired. American Honda Warehouse Inventory: All affected units in American Honda warehouses will have their clamp inspected and, if necessary, properly positioned prior to shipment. These units can be identified by round green stickers on the corners of the carton. Additionally, there is a black round dot inside the spark plug access cover area as shown on page 5. 3 PROCEDURE FUEL TUBE INSPECTION 1. Turn the engine switch (fuel valve) to the OFF position. 2. Remove the front cover with the control panel by removing the four 6 x 15 mm special screws. 3. Pull the front cover out far enough to view the position of the clamp at the fuel tank outlet tube (located on the left side). 4. Using a flashlight, check the position of the fuel tank outlet clamp. For new units - make sure the fuel tank outlet tube clamp tabs are positioned forward (toward the front cover), away from fuel tube B. 4 FUEL TUBE REPLACEMENT 1. Turn the engine switch (fuel valve) to the OFF position. 2. Remove the front cover screws and pull the front cover out slightly. 3. Remove the rear cover (muffler end). 4. Remove the right side cover. 5. Remove the right and left side under plates. 6. Pull the right side support frame from the upper mount and pull the fuel tank out to gain access to fuel tube B. 6 x 20 mm SCREW-WASHER (2) 6 x 137 mm (2) RIGHT SIDE COVER RIGHT SIDE UNDER PLATE DISASSEMBLY: Pull off the plate side ends and then slide down to remove. REASSEMBLY: Align the boss on the plate in the groove in the side cover and then slide up. LEFT SIDE COVER FUEL TANK CAP NECK SEAL RIGHT SIDE SUPPORT FRAME. 5 7. Remove fuel tube B connecting the fuel valve to the fuel pump and replace it with a new tube. The larger I.D. of the fuel tube attaches to the fuel pump (upper end). Make sure the fuel tank outlet tube clamp tabs are positioned forward (toward the front cover), away from fuel tube B. 9. Install the fuel tank into the mounts. 10. When the tubes are all in place, turn the engine switch (fuel valve) ON and inspect the fuel tube for leaks. 11. Reinstall the covers in the reverse order of disassembly. During reassembly, make sure the side covers are properly seated along all edges before tightening the screws and bolts. Clamp tab making contact. TOP-SECTION VIEW FUEL TUBE B Front cover direction. MARKING COMPLETED UNITS Remove the spark plug access cover and apply the appropriate marking as follows: Inspected only: Mark the unit as inspected and the clamp tab location was OK by using a black permanent marker to make a round dot in the location as shown here. BLACK DOT (inspected only marking method) Inspected and clamp rotated: Mark the unit as inspected and clamp tab location corrected by installing the supplied sticker, 7D , as shown here. SAFETY AND EMISSIONS RECALL NOTICE EU2000i PORTABLE GENERATORS Dear Honda EU2000i Generator Customer, In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the California Air Resources Board, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. is conducting a safety and voluntary emissions recall of the fuel tube on certain Honda EU2000i portable generators. Our records indicate that you may own one of these generators. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has determined that your EU2000i portable generator may be emitting pollutants in excess of the federal emission standards as defined in Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations. These emission standards were established to protect the public health or welfare from air pollution. What is the problem? A clamp that connects a fuel tube to the bottom of the fuel tank may have been improperly positioned during assembly, and use of the generator may cause the clamp to wear a hole into an adjacent fuel tube. If the fuel tube is worn sufficiently, gasoline and gasoline vapors may leak out and a fire or explosion could occur. You will need to inspect your generator s serial number to determine if it is within the affected serial number range. If the serial number on your generator is within the affected range, stop using your generator until it has been inspected by an authorized Honda dealer. Please contact a servicing Honda Power Equipment dealer to make an appointment to have the fuel clamp and tube inspected. Repositioning of the tube clamp and, if necessary, replacing a damaged fuel tube with be performed free of charge. Transportation of the generator to the dealer is the responsibility of the owner. They can be identified as follows: Boxed generators are identified by a green dot located on the carton. Also, one of the markings shown to the right, located inside the spark plug access cover. Black dot or Honda sticker 7D1 or 7D2 Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled generator and contact a Honda Power Equipment dealer to have it inspected/repaired free of charge. What is the problem?
