Redland Green School opened with one year group in 2006; in September 2010, our first students will start ear 11 and take their GCSEs. We offer outstanding opportunities for staff and students to shape the future of the school and we are uniquely placed to implement the most exciting innovations for secondary curriculum development Redland Green School is over subscribed at ear 7 and ear 12 and students have high standards of attainment on entry. The curriculum needs to stretch and challenge all students in areas of personal development as well as in academic standards. We also have a higher than average number of students with statements of special need and the work done by the learning support team is exemplary. Meeting the varied needs of all our learners is a key objective for us. We recognise that students benefit from learning in a variety of ways and they also need to develop the confidence and self esteem to put their learning into practice. 3 April 2010 Dear Applicant Thank you for your interest in the post of KS3 Co-ordinator for Humanities at Redland Green School. This new department has grown with the school; its subjects History, Geography and RE are very popular at KS4 and, along with Law, at Post 16. The responsibilities of this strategic post are to lead all subjects at KS3. The successful applicant will need to be an inspiring teacher who understands what good and outstanding learning looks like in the classroom and how to support staff in raising students achievement. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of KS3 Humanities at Redland Green School. The successful applicant will share the school s commitment to develop innovative approaches to curriculum design. Within KS3, the Humanities curriculum includes the delivery of History, Geography and RE separately, although the teaching time has been consolidated to increase continuity for students. Having the same teacher deliver up to four lessons of Humanities in ears 7 & 8 each week, covering topics in short periods of time, has enhanced student learning and outcomes. At present, the faculty are piloting APP (Assessing Pupil Progress) as a way of assessing student work. In ear 9, students are taught by subject specialists in Geography, History or RS. Last September saw our first group of students begin their GCSE courses. At present we offer History (OCR SHP) and/or Geography (EDEXCEL B); and all students study a half GCSE in RE (AQA unit 3). Students have the option to continue studying a Humanities subject at KS4; the vast majority of students have chosen to do so. At post-16 all Humanities subjects are offered at AS and A2 level with the addition of Law. The successful candidate will understand, and be able to succeed, in securing outstanding learning opportunities for our post-16 students. Central to the learning in this curriculum area are effective teachers who are willing to use: varied and innovative pedagogical approaches; Assessment for Learning to propel the learning community forward; and proactive approaches to ensure we meet the personalised needs of our learners in this ever-changing 21 st century. 5 Job Description Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator - Humanities Post Purpose: ν Under the reasonable direction of the Headteacher, to carry out the professional duties of a school teacher as set out in the current School Teachers Pay & Conditions Document (STPCD). ν ou will be responsible for coordinating Key Stage 3 Humanities teaching and extracurricular activities. ν To raise standards of student attainment and achievement within Key Stage 3 Humanities and to monitor and support student progress. ν To be accountable for student progress and development in Key Stage 3 Humanities. ν To ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students studying in the area, in accordance with the aims of the school and the curricular policies. ν To be accountable for leading, managing and developing Key Stage 3 Humanities. ν To effectively manage and deploy teaching/support staff, financial and physical resources within Key Stage 3 Humanities. Reporting to: Curriculum Team Leader for Humanities Responsible for: Teaching and support staff within Key Stage 3 Humanities. Liaising with: Headteacher, Strategic Leadership Team, other Curriculum Team Leaders, Student Support Services and relevant staff with cross-school responsibilities, relevant support staff, LEA representatives, external agencies and parents/carers. Working time: Full-time as specified within the STPCD Salary/Grade: Classroom Teachers Pay Scale and TLR 2b ( 4,268) Disclosure level: Enhanced Teaching: ν To undertake an appropriate programme of teaching in accordance with the duties of a main scale teacher. Operational / Strategic Planning: ν To lead the development of appropriate syllabuses, resources, schemes of work, marking policies, assessment and teaching and learning strategies in Key Stage 3 Humanities. ν To be responsible for the day-to-day management, control and operation of course provision within Key Stage 3 Humanities, including the effective deployment of staff and physical resources. ν To monitor actively and follow up student progress including regularly reviewing the appropriateness of students teaching groups. ν To manage the production and implementation of any Key Stage 3 internal testing. ν To implement all relevant school policies and procedures. ν To lead and manage the planning of Key Stage 3 Humanities and to ensure that the planning activities reflect the needs of students, the School Development Plan and the aims and objectives of the school. ν In conjunction with the Curriculum Team Leader for Humanities to foster and oversee the application of ICT in Key Stage 3 Humanities, including the development of materials for the School s Managed Learning Environment. ν To ensure that Health & Safety policies and practices, including risk assessments, throughout Key Stage 3 Humanities are in line with national requirements and are updated where necessary. ν Organise opportunities for gifted and talented students to develop their skills and enjoyment.

6 Job Description continued Curriculum Development: ν To keep up-to-date with national developments in Key Stage 3 Humanities and teaching practice and methodology. ν To liaise with the Curriculum Team Leader for Humanities to maintain accreditation with the relevant examination and validating bodies. ν To ensure that the development of Key Stage 3 Humanities is in line with national developments. Staffing: ν To work with the relevant Deputy Headteacher to ensure that staff development needs are identified and that appropriate programmes are designed to meet such needs. ν To continue your professional development as agreed with the Curriculum Team Leader for Humanities. ν To be responsible for the efficient and effective deployment of support staff within Key Stage 3 Humanities. ν To undertake Performance Management Review(s) and to act as reviewer for a group of staff within Key Stage 3 Humanities. ν To make appropriate arrangements for classes when staff are absent, liaising with the Cover Supervisor. ν To participate in the interview process for staffing posts when required and to ensure effective induction of new staff in line with school procedures. ν To promote teamwork and to motivate staff to ensure effective working relationships ν To be responsible for the day-to-day management of staff within Key Stage 3 Humanities and to act as a positive role model. Quality Assurance: ν To ensure the effective operation of quality assurance for teachers in Key Stage 3 Humanities. ν To contribute to the process of the setting of targets within Key Stage 3 Humanities and to work towards their achievement. ν To establish and develop high quality learning and teaching in Key Stage 3 Humanities. ν To contribute to the school procedures for lesson observations. ν To monitor and evaluate Key Stage 3 Humanities in line with school self-evaluation procedures. ν To seek/implement modification and improvement where required. ν To ensure that Key Stage 3 Humanities monitoring meets the requirements of the School Development Plan and School Self-Evaluation. Management Information: ν To ensure that accurate and up-to-date information concerning the Key Stage 3 Humanities area is maintained. ν To make use of analysis and to evaluate performance data provided. ν To identify and take appropriate action on issues arising from data, systems and reports, setting deadlines where necessary and reviewing progress on the action taken. ν To produce reports within the self-evaluation cycle for Key Stage 3 Humanities. ν To produce reports on examination performance, including the use of value-added data. ν To manage Key Stage 3 Humanities collection of data liaising with relevant staff. ν To provide the Governing Body with relevant information relating to the curriculum area s performance and development. Communications & Liaison: ν To ensure effective communication / consultation as appropriate with the parents/carers of students. ν To liaise with partner schools, Higher Education, Industry, Examination Boards, Awarding Bodies and other relevant external bodies. ν To represent Key Stage 3 Humanities views and interests.

7 Job Description continued ν To contribute to the planning and delivery of school liaison activities. ν To lead the development of effective Key Stage 3 Humanities links with partner schools and the community, promoting Key Stage 3 Humanities effectively at liaison events in school, partner schools and the wider community. ν To actively promote the development of effective Key Stage 3 Humanities links with external agencies. Management of Resources: ν To manage the available resources of space, staff, money and equipment efficiently within the limits, guidelines and procedures laid down; including deploying the Key Stage 3 Humanities area s budget, acting as a cost centre holder, requisitioning, organising and maintaining equipment and stock and keeping appropriate records. ν To work with the Curriculum Team leader for Humanities in order to ensure that the Key Stage 3 teaching commitments are effectively and efficiently time tabled and roomed. ν To support the school in meeting its legal requirements for worship. ν To promote actively the school s policies. ν To comply with the school s Health and Safety policy and to undertake risk assessments as appropriate.
