MODULE AIMS This module complements the material studied in Systems Administration. The module takes a more strategic look at systems administration by considering the management and governance aspects. Students will look at how enterprise networks, consisting of different interconnecting technologies, should be efficiently managed and improved. The material covered in this module prepares the student to manage large networks, according to appropriate IT governance procedures, and to effectively lead system administrator teams. Page 1

2 3. LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Analyse and apply the process and techniques necessary for the management and production of IT projects, taking into consideration customer requirements, quality assurance, risk assessment, development schedules and costs. 2. Analyse a complex business problem, structure it, collect relevant information and consider options. Using this information, design, implement and manage part of a multi-platform, enterprise grade IT system. 3. Critically evaluate, and apply, appropriate IT governance frameworks and standards to new and existing IT systems. 4. Create service management processes for application across the organisation. 5. Create and document innovative IT processes, which align to organisation requirements, and assess their alignment to organisational objectives. 6. Utilise appropriate documentation standards and techniques to create system documentation. 7. Apply appropriate methodologies to develop infrastructure which will address the information requirements of organisations in order to meet organisational goals. OUTLINE SYLLABUS The role of IT systems management (ITSM) in modern businesses. ITIL, COBIT and other governance standards. Systems processes and documentation. ISM project management and budgeting. IT financial management. IT Strategy. Managing IT Teams. Enterprise IT systems architecture. Enterprise IT system deployment, orchestration and automation. Configuration Management. Monitoring and auditing systems. Cloud service management. Backup, recovery, disaster recovery. Page 3

TEACHING LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGY Teaching is performed via face-to-face lectures, followed by practical sessions in which students are assigned exercises involving practicing and further exploring material from the preceding lectures. Assessment is by coursework. During the lectures, the students will be taught the theoretical underpinnings of IT Management and Governance. The practical sessions will demonstrate how these concepts are realised in modern IT systems. This contributes to the student s and Research Literacy characteristics. Students will be required, as part of their assessment, to design and implement policies and procedures for their system, using best practice, as informed by the standard frameworks. Students will be working in teams and will experience a variety of roles and responsibilities on the team, including termination and recruitment phases. Students will be required to continually reflect on their performance, as team members, as well as how their own learning and problem solving techniques are developing. This will contribute to the student s Critical Self-awareness and Personal Literacy and Digital and Information Literacy characteristics. Given that IT systems are global in scope, students will be expected to consider international issues in the design of their system. This will contribute to the student s Active Citizenship. 6. Instrument and monitor the system to evaluate performance and future expansion needs. Automate a variety of complex system administration tasks in a scalable manner. At regular intervals, throughout the module, the roles in the group will be changed through the promotion of group members, the firing of members from roles and the subsequent interviewing and recruitment of members to new roles. Students are required to carry out termination and recruitment processes, according to IT governance best practice guidelines, and report, as a group, on the practicality and success of the approach taken. 6 Assignment 4: (Individual) Produce a reflective report, reflecting on the learning experience and how the problem solving and learning methodologies have evolved pages 3, 8 25% N/A Written examinations N/A Other N/A 7.2 Opportunities for formative assessment and feedback The students work on Assignment 2, during practical sessions, and verbal feedback is given on the appropriateness of the students problem solving strategies and choices made. Students are expected to instruct other members of their group on the rationale for their design, and implementation choices, to ensure an integrated final system. Students will hold regular team meetings, for assignments 1 3, and will submit the minutes of those meetings to the module team for comment and feedback. 8.
