1 Scavenger Hunt Can you find all of the characters? Afterschool and Out-of-school Programming Passive Program Ideas 1
2 Scavenger Hunt Ballot Please complete and return to the librarian. Thanks. 1. Would you like the LPPL to expand the Scavenger Hunt into the main part of the library? Yes or 2. Would you prefer a scavenger hunt or guess the number in the jar type game each week? 3. Please choose three categories to base the scavenger hunts/guess the number games on: a. b. c. Craft Kit or Craft Grab Bag Compiling a craft with pieces and instructions in a plastic baggie. Have them at circulation desk to have children ask for them (you can keep track of participation and head count). You can also barcode bags to increase circulation. This is a great way to use up extra crafts. Star Wars Scavenger Hunt The scavenger hunt will be a series of holiday characters/images hidden throughout our children's section, and will help the children get familiar with this part of the library. Examples of places characters may be hidden include: the circulation book return, the children's circulation desk, the DVD's, the board books, the picture books, etc. The scavenger hunts will be placed on the table we have in the children's section, as well as be available at the children's circulation desk. Once children have completed the scavenger hunt portion, they will receive a holiday house to color. The finished house will then be put on display (this will also serve as our "ballot" and will help count how many children take part in the program). As well, those who complete the scavenger hunt will get a small holiday prize (a sticker, most likely). Find the Hidden Book I would like to incorporate a daily "Find the Hidden Book" contest into our Winter Reading Program. We have done this with great success during our Summer Reading Program and the kids are always disappointed when it ends in August. Since we live in a snowy resort area, winters are a celebration. We have done a lowkey Winter Reading Program for the last 15 years, running December-February. I propose that we hide a giftwrapped book somewhere in the children's section. The first child to find the book each day gets to select a small prize out of a treasure chest. It's a sneaky way to get kids to explore areas that they aren't familiar with and perhaps discover some new and exciting reading material in the process! 2

4 Cat in the Hat Masks 1. Cut out the center of the paper plate to create a place for a face to show through. Color the remaining part of the paper plate with black markers if you like. 2. Cut out the bow and tape, glue or staple it to the bottom of the plate (chin area when the plate is positioned next to a face). 3. Cut out the cat ears and secure them in their respective places on the paper plate. 4. Glue or tape the pipe cleaners to the sides of your plate for whiskers. 5. Cut out the shape of the hat and color in the red stripes. Then secure the hat to the top of the paper plate (forehead area when positioned next to a face). 6. Tape or glue the Popsicle stick to the inside of the plate at the very bottom, so the kids can hold the plate up like a mask. 4
