Step-by-Step Guide Shoot and edit a professional head shot The university has asked you to provide a digital headshot for an upcoming event on campus. But, the only two options include a goofy picture from your summer holiday (complete with sunglasses) or an old directory photo taken 25 years ago. It s time to update your image, but how? This document begins with tips on capturing your self portrait by using your digital camera. You then use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to organize and enhance your collection of images from the photo shoot. Finally, you ll see how round trip editing between Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop makes pixel-level editing and photo retouching a cinch. Tips for shooting your self portrait Dress for the part. If you re headshot is for professional use, dress professionally. Ask a friend to shoot the picture for you. Or, if you re doing a self-portrait, use a tripod. Most camera shops sell inexpensive table-top tripods that you can place just about anywhere. Make sure there is good lighting. Natural lighting is a good choice, so shooting the image near a window or outdoors may produce a better result than shooting indoors with a Flash. Many digital cameras let you reduce the resolution to fit more pictures on your memory card. Set your camera to its highest resolution setting before taking your pictures. Take your photos against a neutral background, such as a colored wall or blue sky. Fill the frame with your head and shoulders. Figure 1 Self portraits Take lots of pictures. The more pictures you take, the more likely you are to capture one you re happy with.

Copying your pictures into Lightroom After your photo shoot, you ll have lots of pictures to sort through and manage. Lightroom is an excellent tool for managing photo libraries and basic photo retouching or color correction. To copy your pictures into Lightroom: 1. Insert your digital camera data card into your computer. 2. Start Lightroom and select the Library module at the top of the window. 3. Click the Import button in the bottom-left corner. The Import window appears (Figure 2). The Source panel appears on the left. The File Handling and Destination panels are on the right. Source panel File Handling and Destination panels 4. If it s not already selected, use the Source panel on the left to locate your camera chip, device or folder where your pictures are stored. By default all images in the current folder are selected for import (Figure 2). Notice the options at the top of the window. You can Copy the files as Digital Negatives (DNG), copy the files in their current format, move the files, or add the current directory as a new catalog. Note: If you re copying files from a camera chip or external device, the Move and Add options are disabled. Figure 2 Import window 5. Select Copy to make a copy of the source images. 6. Expand the Destination panel on the right. Then locate and select the folder where you want to copy the images. To create a new subfolder, select Into Subfolder and enter a name. 7. Expand the File Handling panel and select Make A Second Copy To and choose a location for a backup copy of your original images. 2

Copying your pictures into Lightroom 8. Click Import. The selected images appear in the Library window (Figure 3). You can select an image to work with in the main Library window or by using the filmstrip at the bottom of the window. The Library has four views, which are controlled by using the buttons at the bottom of the window (Figure 3). You can view multiple photos in a grid (the default). You can view, rotate, and rate a photo by choosing the Loupe view. The Compare view lets you see two photos side-by-side. The Survey view lets you flip between photos, much like viewing a slide show. View mode buttons Quick Develop panel Figure 3 Library window Enhancing images by using Lightroom Lightroom includes several adjustment controls for making quick fixes and enhancing photos. To quickly enhance one or more photos, use the options in the Quick Develop panel. For more detailed enhancements and photo retouching, select a photo and change to the Develop module. To enhance images by using Lightroom: 1. Select the photo you want to enhance, and click Develop at the top of the window. The Develop window appears (Figure 4). Basic panel In Develop mode, the Basic panel appears on the right. The Basic panel is designed to work from the top down. A typical workflow starts by adjusting white balance, exposure, contrast, and other tonal controls. Figure 4 Develop window 3

Enhancing images by using Lightroom 2. Use the Basic panel to enhance the images (Figure 5). Adjust white balance. To enhance overall image quality, start by adjusting white balance. Select the White Balance Selector tool (eye dropper). Point to an area of the image that should be neutral. Typically, something white, gray, or black works best. As you do this, look at the Navigator panel on the left and you ll see the white balance preview. Once you ve found a desirable neutral area, click on it. If the white balance isn t perfect, drag the Temp and Tint sliders in the Basic panel to make adjustments. 7 Adjust tone. Drag the Tone sliders in the Basic panel. You can adjust exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites and blacks. Adjust clarity, vibrance, and saturation. The Clarity, Vibrance, and Saturation sliders are grouped in the Presence section of the Basic panel. The Clarity slider adds contrast, which adds dimension or depth. Zoom to 100%, and then increase the Clarity amount to add subtle contrast. The Vibrance slider affects less-saturated colors and protects skin tones. Increase the Vibrance to add color variety. The Saturation slider adjusts colors equally. Increase the amount to saturate, or decrease the amount to remove color. Figure 5 Basic panel Figure 6 Snapshots panel After achieving a set of changes you like, save them by pressing the Plus symbol at the top of the Snapshots panel (Figure 6). After capturing a snapshot, you can continue enhancing the photo and quickly return to the saved version by selecting it in the Snapshots panel. Crop Spot Removal Red Eye Removal Graduated Filter You can also return to your original settings at any time by clicking Reset below the Basic panel. Adjustment Brush The Tools panel (Figure 7) includes options for repairing and enhancing images. For example, you can crop an image or remove red eye or unwanted spots. When you re finished using a tool, click it a second time to turn it off and hide its options. Figure 7 Tools panel 4

Enhancing images by using Lightroom 3. Select the Crop Overlay tool and drag the boundaries of the photo to crop it as needed (Figure 8). A good headshot is filled with mostly your head and shoulders. Click Done to crop the image. 4. If your head shot includes red-eye, caused by a camera flash, select the Red Eye Correction tool and drag over the redness from the center of the eye to remove it. 5. To remove small spots or blemishes, use the Spot Removal tool (Figure 9). This is similar to using the Spot Healing tool in Adobe Photoshop. 6. To apply an adjustment to a specific portion of the image, for example to remove a shadow on your face or whiten your teeth, select the Adjustment Brush (Figure 10) and paint over the area you want to enhance. This creates an adjustment mask and opens a set of enhancement control that you can apply to the masked area. You can open the Effect menu to apply preset affects to the mask. Figure 8 Cropping Figure 9 Spot removal Adjustment Brush Effect properties Adjustment Brush options Figure 10 Adjustment settings 5

Extending editing capabilties with Adobe Photoshop In Lightroom you can only push an image so far. For more advanced photo retouching and pixel level editing, open the image in Photoshop. To extend editing capabilities with Photoshop: 1. In Lightroom, select the image you want to edit in Phototshop and press Control+E (Windows) or Command+E (Mac OS). The Edit Photo With Adobe Photoshop CS6 dialog box appears (Figure 11). You can continue working with the edited Lightroom version of the photo, edit a copy of the original, or edit the original photo. 2. To add to your current enhancements, select Edit A Copy With Lightroom Adjustments, and click Edit. The image opens in Photoshop (Figure 12). You can now work with the tools and features of Photoshop. For example, you can work with layers to composite images, change perspective, clone portions of an image, or add a wide range of filters and effects that are not available in Lightroom. For more information on editing photos in Photoshop, view the Learn Photoshop CS6 show on Adobe TV: Figure 11 Edit Photo With Adobe Photoshop CS6 dialog box 3. After you re finished editing in Photoshop, close and save your Photoshop file and return to Lightroom. Figure 12 Photoshop workspace 6

Sharing your final headshot Now that you ve finished enhancing and editing your head shot, it s ready to share. You can use the Lightroom Print module to prepare a picture for printing or for sending as a JPEG file. If your headshot is going to appear on a faculty web page, you want to convert it to a 72 pixels per inch JPEG. To share your final headshot: 1. In Lightroom, change to the Library module and select the image you want to share. 2. Click Print at the top of the window. Print To menu 3. Expand the Print Job panel on the right (Figure 13). You may need to scroll to see this panel. 4. Open the Print To pop-up menu and choose JPEG. 5. Change the File Resolution value to Leave the JPEG Quality set to Select Custom File Dimensions and reduce the size of the image. 8. Click Print To File. The Save File dialog box appears. 9. Select a location for the new file, enter a file name, and click Save. You can now the picture or add it to a web page just like any other JPEG image.
