Visual Story A visual resource for people visiting the theatre This resource is intended to help prepare visitors for a new experience and to help them become familiar with their surroundings.
Here is list of words and their meanings that you might hear people use in the theatre: Audience - This is what people who work in the theatre call the people who are coming to see the show. Auditorium This is the area where the seats are for the audience to sit in to watch the show. Box office - This is the place in the theatre where you go to buy a ticket for the show or to collect a ticket if you have already paid for it. Costume This is what the clothes are called that the characters wear during the show Foyer This is the space in the theatre where audience members can wait before the show starts. In the foyer you will find a bar, a stall which sells merchandise and the toilets. Interval This is a break during the show, which gives the audience a chance to use the toilets or buy a drink. Some people just stay in their seats during the interval and wait for the show to carry on Merchandise These are items sold in the theatre which have been specially made for the show. They are usually things like t-shirts, mugs and keyrings which have the shows name on them. Platform For this show the seats are divided on two platforms. Your ticket will tell you if you are Platform number 1 or number 2. Programme This is a book you can buy at the theatre which gives you more information about the show and the actors who are performing in it. It usually has pictures of the show and details about the theatre. Set This is what the design of the stage is called. It is a word used to describe what the audience can see on the stage where the actors move around during the show. Ushers This is the name we call staff who are around to show you to your seat
The theatre is in an area of London called King s Cross. Here is a map to show you where in Kings Cross you can find the theatre. To travel to the theatre you might use public transport. This could be a bus, overground or underground train. The closest station is King s Cross St Pancras.
The Railway Children is a play performed in a theatre in London The theatre is called King s Cross Theatre. The Theatre has one main entrance. The entrance is beside the box office off Goods Way:
To watch The Railway Children you will need a ticket. You may have to pick up your ticket from the box office before you come in:
Ushers will be standing by the entrance gates to check your ticket and show you where to go. They might be wearing Edwardian costumes to fit in with the theme of the show. They might look like this: In the foyer and in the theatre the ushers will be wearing uniforms which look like this:
Ushers work for the theatre and will help you find your seat and answer any questions you may have. Once an usher has checked your ticket you will walk down the path, down the stairs and into the foyer: The stairs are quite dark, but don t worry this is normal. There are lights to guide your way down. This is what the foyer looks like when you come through the doors. It might be very busy with people and it can become quite noisy.
If you have difficulty using stairs there is a lift which an usher will operate to help get you into to foyer: In the foyer you will see a bar where you can buy drinks and snacks:
There is also a merchandise stall and a sweet shop: The toilets are also in the foyer: The foyer can become crowded and noisy from 1 hour before the performance
Inside the foyer you will see signs to Platform 1 and 2. You ticket will tell you which door you need to go through: There will be an usher at the door giving you some information about the show: Before the show starts you will need to go into the auditorium to find your seats.
This is what the theatre looks like on the inside: When you enter the seating area you will need to find the letter which shows you the row and the number on your seat:
If you need to go to the toilet, please ask an usher. Before the show starts you must turn off your phone. You are not allowed to take pictures inside the auditorium. The actors will come onto the stage just before the show starts to talk to the audience. When the show starts it will get darker. Now you need to be quiet. There will be lights and smoke effects and music. Some of the effects are very loud and some of the lights are very bright. This is normal. During the show you may feel sad or happy, this is ok.
If you would like to take some time out during the show you can go to the foyer to relax and watch the show on a TV screen. There will be a break half way through the show. This is called the Interval and it will last for 20 minutes During this break you may want to use the toilet. You can also buy a drink or an ice cream before coming back to your seat. Some people won't leave their seats during the interval. They will just wait for the show to start again. At the end of the show the audience will clap their hands. You may want to clap your hands with them to show that you have enjoyed it. To signal that the show has finished the actors will leave the stage and the lights will get brighter. To leave the theatre you need to go out the door that you came in, back though the foyer and up the steps to the gate where you first entered. An usher can show you the way if you need help.
Enjoy the show! We hope you enjoy your visit to the King s Cross Theatre. If you would like to tell us about it then please info@kingscrosstheatre.com
