Safeguarding A learners guide London Learning Consortium L LcStepping-up to the challenges of lifelong learning
Introduction London Learning Consortium is committed to safeguarding people and vulnerable adults, and to protect staff from potential allegations of abuse. We have a duty to support the physical and psychological well-being of people and vulnerable adults by safeguarding them from all forms of abuse. Increasingly people are at risk from emotional and sexual abuse via digital technology and social media. LLC has both a Safeguarding Policy and an E-Safety Policy aiming to safeguard them from these risks. To help support learners, London Learning Consortium Staff will adhere to the principles and practices of Safeguarding. By law, this includes all those under 18 and vulnerable adults; it also relates to those over 18 who report abuse as a child. What we do to ensure you are safe Your programme induction includes: Fire exit information & meeting points First aid information Meet personal tutor Your Code of Conduct is explained An explanation of your course Available support explained Safeguarding induction Equality & Diversity induction LLC employ staff trained in: Building Evacuation Health & Safety Procedures First Aid Fire Marshalling Safeguarding LLC display information on: LLC provide: A safe learning environment Regular fire alarm tests First aid facilities/accident book Drinking water A personal tutor Planned evacuations Common room If you are on workplace learning programmes LLC Check you are safe by inspecting the premises Work with your employer to make sure you are treated in the right way Make sure you have a work based mentor Monitor/review your progress Health & Safety Law Support for learners Fire exits Support contact numbers
Safeguarding What can be considered abuse physical ABUSE emotional ABUSE sexual abuse forced marriage Psychological ABUSE Discrimination Self Harm Neglect This is not a complete list, if you experience anything that makes you feel unhappy you should tell somebody If you have/are experiencing abuse listed on this page: Tell your Tutor/Assessor or a member of LLC staff
Online Safety What can you do? Check your privacy setting, be in control of who can see your profile, see your comments or copy your photos Think before you post, remember whatever you post online can be made public instantly Respect your friends and others. You can t see the impact your words or images have on others, so show respect Know how to use the safety tools. Know how to block unwanted contacts and restrict your private information such as phone numbers Respect copyright laws. Using or sharing copyright materials like music without permission is against the law Know where to report and seek help. Ensure you know where to report abuse Cyber risks Bullying Grooming Misuse of your personal information Attempts to pressure an individual into doing and/or seeing something they may not wish to see/do Cyber bullying can include: Threatening text messages Threatening instant messages Posting humiliating messages What to do: Tell your personal tutor Tell your work based mentor Tell a member of the LLC team
What is bullying? There is a deliberate intention to hurt or humiliate There is an imbalance of power that makes the victim unable to defend themselves It is persistent It creates a feeling of fear How do you know if you are being bullied? You feel bad You dread seeing that person You feel afraid You can t sleep You feel anxious and depressed If you see or experience bullying Tell your Tutor/Assessor Tell a member of LLC staff Tell the Designated Safeguarding Officer What happens if you tell us? We make time to listen to you and take your issue seriously We agree an action plan together We will deal with the problem together What is grooming? Grooming involves psychological manipulation in the form of positive reinforcement and foot in-the-door tactics, using activities that are typically legal but later lead to illegal activities. Grooming is as relevant to adults as it is to children. If you feel you or someone you know may be vulnerable please contact a member of LLC staff. This is done to gain a person s trust, and can also involve obtaining the trust of those close to the victim such as family members.
What is Radicalisation? Radicalisation is a process by which an individual or group comes to adopt increasingly extreme political, social, or religious ideals and aspirations that: 1. Reject or undermine the status quo 2. Reject and/or undermine contemporary ideas and expressions of freedom of choice If you believe someone is at risk of radicalisation you can help them obtain support and prevent them becoming involved in terrorism by raising your concerns and making a referral to our Designated Safeguarding Officers. Typically, a radicalisation process includes exposure of an individual to extremist viewpoints that may eventually influence the person to carry out an act of violent extremism or terrorism. This could take weeks, months or even years. It is possible to intervene during this process and stop someone becoming a terrorist or supporting violent extremist activity. Violent extremism is where people seek to justify or promote terrorism or encourage others to commit such acts. If you see inappropriate web content tell a member of staff. Inappropriate content includes speeches calling for racial or religious violence or videos glorifying terrorists who have committed atrocities and/or inciting racial hatred. There is a dedicated internet page where inappropriate content can be reported. You can visit the site at Anti-terrorist hotline on Crimestoppers on If you suspect terrorism or violent extremism is being promoted or related activity is taking place then these concerns should be reported to the local police by calling 101 or in an emergency call 999.
Health & Safety Your safety is in your hands The Health & Safety at Work Act says; you must take reasonable care for your own safety and for the safety of others. What is reasonable care? Working carefully and following instructions Not using equipment and tools without training Not misusing equipment/tools Telling your personal tutor/work based mentor/member of staff about any hazards you see Storing tools and equipment safely Hazards Suspicious packages Broken tools/equipment/furniture Slippery/wet floors Trailing wires Running on stairs Electrical equipment Alcohol/drugs Obstructions in walkways Workstation Is your chair safe? Is your chair at the right height? Is your posture good? Are there any trailing wires? Is your screen too bright? Are the plugs overloaded? Do you feel comfortable? If you spot a hazard or have an accident, report this to a member of LLC staff as soon as possible
Equality and Diversity Each individual is unique with differing experiences, circumstances and perspectives. We strive for equality throughout our organisation and welcome all individuals regardless of gender identity, age, intellectual or physical capability, ethnic origin, family circumstances, marital status, sexual orientation, lifestyle, race, colour, nationality, religion, political persuasion or offender status.
