2 TEACHER TRAINING FOR STATE SCHOOLS - ENTRY You must have at least a C or above in English and Maths GCSE or equivalent to train for secondary teaching and in addition to English and Maths at least a C pass in a science subject to teach in primary schools. You will need to have a degree and in order to be eligible for any funding you will need at least a second (2:2), you may also find some teacher training courses will set a requirement of a 2:2 to get a place on their courses. Teaching is a demanding job both physically and mentally and you will need to demonstrate that you are able to cope with this. You will also have been expected to have undertaken periods of observation in schools before attending course interviews, these observations should be of the age group you intend to train to teach; for example someone applying for secondary teaching needs to have observed in a high school. When trying to gain an observation experience be sure to stress to schools that you want observation experience, not work experience. For advice on getting observation experience contact the teaching line for advice: , or visit: education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/school-expereince.aspx; for contact details of schools in your area see the edubase website: To work as a teacher in state-maintained schools in England and Wales you need to have professional qualified teacher status (QTS). Teachers in independent schools are not required to have QTS but most do. Many independent schools do not offer a QTS induction year. To be awarded QTS you must: Complete a period of training, such as a one year professional or Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or a Schools Direct programme, which recommends you for QTS Complete a period of induction, known as the newly qualified teacher (NQT) year Pass skills tests in English and Maths before you commence your training or PGCE course:

3 APPLYING You will be able to apply for PGCE, schools direct and SCITT teacher training through UCAS from 1st November (you apply direct to Teach First for their courses). You will have three choices in the UCAS system but you do not have to use them all. These three choices cover all the options so you can in theory apply for one PGCE, one SCITT and one Schools Direct all your applications will go out simultaneously. If you are unsuccessful in your first round of applications you will go into apply 2 which will give you further choices that will go out one at a time. All teacher training providers will have the facility to close and reopen courses throughout the application circle so you will need to check back as a course full in December may reopen in February. There are no closing dates. FEES AND BURSARIES Tuition fees are payable and these will vary from institution to institution. Training bursaries maybe available depending on the subject you wish to teach and what class of degree you gained. For further information see the link provided. LECTURING IN HIGHER EDUCATION To become a university lecturer you normally need to study for at least a Masters but more normally you will be expected to have a PhD in your chosen subject. Lecturers can study for teaching qualifications once in post and the Higher Education Academy ( accredits University teaching and learning courses. 4 TRAINING OPTIONS There are a variety of ways to train part time, full time and employed routes exist. All routes with the exception of Teach First require you to apply through UCAS. PGCE University based offered in primary, secondary and post 16 Schools Direct (1/3 of teacher training takes place in this form) Trainee and salaried routes based in a school (there is an expectation that you will be employed by the school at the end of your training) Teach First School based (intensive programme for students with 2:1 or above highly competitive, early application recommended 12 months before you start) SCITT School based ( you will be based with a consortium of schools Training to teach in post 16 can be on the job once a lecturer position has been found (this is in fact more common than undertaking the PGCE in post compulsory education). You can undertake an initial preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector or PTLLS as it is known, which could possibly help in gaining a first position. This course is part time and about 6 weeks long and is available at local colleges. Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) gives you QTS for the under 5s a list of approved training providers which can be either schools or nurseries or Universities can be found here: If you are interested in teaching in the early years you may wish to consider training in the lower age range of primary as this will give you flexibility for employment straddling both nursery and reception classes in school. Researchers in school this is a relatively new route that has opened to people with a doctorate, it aims to attract researchers into the classroom whilst still keeping in touch with their research interests. It is a two year salaried programme with the option of a third year on the Subject Leader Programme. Placements are available across the England. See In both the Schools Direct programme and SCITT there are options to do a PGCE or just get QTS, you need to consider if you are happy with just QTS which will allow you teach in England and Wales. A PGCE is an internationally recognised qualification and will give you the option to work abroad if you wish and will also make it easy to move to Master level qualification if you wish.

5 TRAINING OPTIONS CONTINUED A common question is Does my degree need to be in a national curriculum subject to teach in secondary and primary state schools? The short answer to this is no but you must be able to demonstrate good subject knowledge in the national curriculum subject you intend to teach; most providers will expect at least half your degree to be made up of the subject you intend to teach. An example of this would be a person with an engineering degree wanting to teach maths demonstrating that half their degree involved the applied study of maths. If a provider feels you have potential to teach a shortage subject area they may recommend a subject enhancement course to improve your subject knowledge before you commence your teacher training, see below for further information. Subject enhancement courses If you wish to teach a STEM subject, Computing or a Modern Foreign language but your main degree is not in that subject than you may undertake a course which can be as short as 8 weeks if a refresher is all that is required or to an extensive 36 week course to give you the subject knowledge required.
