AIMSweb Behavior Pearson Clinical Assessments Group V. Scott Hooper, Ph.D., NCSP National Training Consultant June, 2010 Agenda AIMSweb Behavior Overview Benchmark Action Plans Progress Monitoring Interventions Reporting Why AIMSweb for Behavior? Q& A 1

AIMSweb Behavior Overview AIMSweb Behavior is a comprehensive, flexible behavior management toolkit that provides the framework, resources and data for RTI and Positive Behavior programs. AIMSweb Behavior includes Valid, reliable, teacher-friendly universal screeners for both behavior and social skills Fully customizable, online or printable progress monitor forms Research-based behavior and social skills interventions for teachers that are proven effective Reporting at the student, class, grade, school, or district level that includes both behavior and academics AIMSweb Behavior Overview AIMSweb Behavior Features Web-based, no local software installations required Screening and progress monitoring available in online and paper formats For grades K-12 Includes an online library of printable behavior and social skills interventions, many with video examples Online tools help create custom progress monitoring forms and select interventions based on screening results Flexibility to use all or some of the components, depending on the structure of your behavior management program 2

AIMSweb Behavior Overview Okay, but can we... Track students with a daily behavior report card? Track progress on positive behaviors? Track compliance with our School-wide Expectations? Use this system for Check-in Check-out, or Check and Connect? Compare progress by special populations? Compare behavior issues by teacher, or look at summaries by school for the district? Yes! AIMSweb Behavior - Components Benchmark Action Plan Monitor Social Skills Prosocial behavior Motivation to learn and / or Behavior Teacher rating Student rating Set up progress monitoring and / or Select interventions Schoolwide expectations or Replacement behaviors or Negative behaviors Reporting student class grade school district state 3

AIMSweb Behavior - Benchmark Benchmark Universally screen to identify students at risk for behavior or social skill problems that interfere with academic success Intervene early before students rack up ODRs Identify students who may otherwise slip through the cracks i.e., internalizing problems Two types of screening Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BESS), for social emotional problems Social skills Prosocial Behavior and Motivation to learn Ideally given 3x per academic year: fall, winter, spring In fall, after 4-6 weeks experience with students AIMSweb Behavior Benchmark BESS (Behavioral and Emotional Screening System) A quick, reliable and systematic way to screen for behavioral and emotional issues in children and adolescents NOT a clinical or diagnostic assessment Teacher form Rates students from K items, around 5 minutes to complete Student form for grades 3 and higher Identifies internalizing issues teacher form may miss Printable forms, already populated with student information Spanish forms available Scoring results in one of three risk levels for behavior or emotional issues: Normal Elevated Extremely elevated Norm-referenced screener: normed on a national sample that closely approximates U. S. population 4

AIMSweb Behavior Benchmark BESS (Behavioral and Emotional Screening System) Items are relevant to a school setting Teachers rate student behavior Students rate how they think, feel or act The response choices are Never, Sometimes, Often, or Always Examples from the teacher form: Pays attention. Disrupts other children s activities. Is well organized. Examples from the student form: I am good at making decisions. My school feels good to me. Even when I try hard, I fail. This is the Behavior Tab The BESS teacher form can be completed online. To complete the assessment, click on Assess Now. 5

Which will take you to this screen. Once completed, This is the the score, Behavior Tab the date completed and a color code will appear. Color coding helps the teacher understand what they should do based on that result. This student is in need of a behavioral action plan. 6

AIMSweb Behavior Benchmark Prosocial Behavior & Motivation to Learn Measures student skills against grade level expectations in two skill areas: Prosocial Behavior and Motivation to Learn Items taken from Social Skills Improvement System (SSIS) Performance Screening Guide Teachers rate students on performance descriptor levels from 1 to 5, that best represents the student s current level of functioning Teachers compare each student to the behavioral criteria as opposed to comparing students to each other as commonly done with norm-referenced assessments Each area is measured against age- or grade-level expectations Definitions reflect developmental differences and age-or gradeappropriate performance expectations AIMSweb Behavior Benchmark Prosocial Behavior Definition 7

AIMSweb Behavior Benchmark Motivation to Learn Definition And the teacher can quickly rate all students in the class. 8

Once saved, the scores appear on the summary screen, with the administration date, and recommended action. Students with scores that are at the red or yellow level will be automatically checked as Add to Action Plan. 9

AIMSweb Behavior Action Plans The Action Plan Tab is a central point from which teachers can set up individualized behavior intervention and/or progress monitoring plans for selected students The tools for setting up progress monitoring are very flexible: For programs concerned with identification and remediation of problem behaviors, use AIMSWeb Behavior to easily develop customized behavior action and monitoring plans that are tailored to the needs of each student For programs concerned with evaluating a group-wide behavior program, use AIMSweb Behavior to create customized rating forms to track a student s performance over time on school-wide expectations AIMSweb Behavior Progress Monitor Progress monitoring options What to monitor? You choose: Maladaptive behavior Prosocial behavior School-wide expectations Custom behavior How to monitor? You choose: Intervals Frequencies Rating scales Which rating form response options? You choose: Never, Sometimes, Often, Almost always (0, 1, 2, 3) Rarely, Sometimes, Often, Most of the time (0, 1, 2, 3) Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, Strongly agree (0, 1, 2, 3) Below average, Average, Above average (0, 1, 2) Rarely, Often, Most of the time (0, 1, 2) Yes, No (1, 0) Who does the rating? You choose: Teachers Interventionists Student AIMSweb Behavior can create variations of daily behavior monitoring forms consistent with common Tier 2 interventions, such as Check In Check Out (CICO) and Check and Connect. 10

AIMSweb Behavior Progress Monitor Here s an example of a frequency progress monitoring form, which would track the total number of occurrences of a behavior. AIMSweb Behavior Progress Monitor Here s an example of a rating scale progress monitoring form. 11

AIMSweb Behavior Progress Monitor Here s an example of an interval progress monitoring form, which would track the percent of time engaged in a task. AIMSweb Behavior Interventions AIMSweb Behavior includes two comprehensive sources of interventions BASC-2 Classroom Intervention Guides Evidence-based Provides strategies, steps and tools Social Skills Intervention System (SSIS) Intervention Guide Prescriptive in nature Provides Support Resources (e.g. Social Skill Cue Cards, Charts) Video clips that model positive and negative behaviors 12
