3 Choosing GCSEs This is the first in a series of important decisions you ll be making in relation to your career. It s the start of you taking more responsibility for your career choice. GCSE subjects and your career ideas Some careers have set GCSE subject requirements Particularly important when considering careers with engineering/ health/ science focus Some have subjects that are preferred at GCSE and A Level Some subjects are useful 3

6 Positive reasons for choosing a GCSE You re good at it You like it or find it interesting You think you will do well in it It s useful for your the career ideas you have Your teachers think it is suitable for you It will combine well with other subjects Negative reasons for choosing a GCSE Your friends are doing it You think it will be easy You think you should do it even though you haven t found out about it. 6

I m going to do History as I enjoy it Check course content before deciding it could be different than you expect I m going to do Spanish I like my teacher You may have a new teacher next year! I m taking Geography because my friend is Choose subjects you will like friends can change I love Technology but worry that it s a boys subject There are no boy or girl only subjects It is easy to make poor decisions if you lack information Decision making becomes easier when you have all the facts 7

8 A word of caution.. Avoid making your option choices based solely on a career idea You may change your mind! Pick subjects you enjoy, are interested in and are good at Consider Job trends what sectors are the jobs going to be in the future? How easy or difficult is it to get a particular type of job? Job Prospects Where will I work? Northern Ireland or do I have to consider moving to get into a particular type of work? What qualifications do I need to get into this career? How competitive is it to get onto the course? 8

9 What are the future job opportunities in Northern Ireland? There are job opportunities across all occupational areas in Northern Ireland but there is higher demand in occupations relating to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). The following areas are extremely important to the Northern Ireland economy: Business and Financial Services (including accountancy, corporate recovery, financial analysts) ICT (particularly software development skills, database development, systems architecture and internet specialist skills) 9

10 The following areas are extremely important to the Northern Ireland economy: Agri Food Sector (including lab technicians, food scientists, biotech, machine operatives) Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (CAD skills, CNC machine operatives, mechanical and electrical engineering skills including at technician level, strategic marketing) Renewable energies and recycling Health and life sciences Creative and digital media 10

11 Public Sector Many public sector (government funded services) facing reduction across UK. There will be fewer jobs in areas such as Education/ Health/ Police/ Fire Service etc Labour Market Information (LMI) Where do I find this info?
