2 ESA FACTS AND FIGURES Over 50 years of experience 20 Member States Eight sites/facilities in Europe, sites/ground stations worldwide, about 2200 staff 4.1 billion Euro budget (2014) Over 70 satellites designed, tested and operated in flight 18 scientific satellites in operation Six types of launcher developed 200th launch of Ariane celebrated in February 2011

3 ACTIVITIES ESA is one of the few space agencies in the world to combine responsibility in nearly all areas of space activity. Space science Human spaceflight Exploration Earth observation Launchers Navigation Telecommunications Technology Operations Space science is a Mandatory programme, all Member States contribute to it according to GNP. All other programmes are Optional, funded a la carte by Participating States.

5 ESA IT: The Facts IT is there before, during, after missions and for daily support Various ITs exist and run independently One IT department, centralised, serving all, with ~70 M /yr. budget Communities served are very heterogeneous Common/corporate IT is still considered low level support infrastructure ESA IT must compete internally Higher efficiency and smaller budgets requested Customers are highly skilled and IT savvy

6 ESA IT: The New Course ESA IT was perceived no differently from any other traditional IT: too slow, always late and too expensive. Something had to change.. A new course was set up to change the foundations of ESA IT with a: flexible IT contracts structure, partnership vs. supplier relationship delivery model closer to users engaged customer interaction model Stronger business governance Innovation as a competitive advantage

7 ESA IT: Changing The Paradigm ESA IT committed to show and communicate its capability to introduce innovation and to act as a true unifying entity for IT across the Agency by: Fast forwarding the adoption of new technologies in key areas (cloud, social), skipping one generation from actual; Providing multi-customer integrated service platforms to technical communities; Taking over an aggregator and broker role for IT solutions and services within the organisation; European Space Agency

8 Changing The Paradigm: esacloud One example of this new course is the ESA private cloud, esacloud: provided and operated by OBS which in combination with virtualisation, allowed: Creating a common, secure and rapidly provisioned computing infrastructure for multiple uses in ESA (overcoming individual solutions), not only in corporate domain; Establishing means to support data center consolidation objectives across ESA; Delivering efficiency gains by providing a corporate infrastructure at a fraction of traditional replacement costs; Delivering higher service continuity capabilities with hot redundancy solutions for corporate applications and services; Fostering leadership of ESA IT in the provision of innovative solutions. 9 esacloud: built to fit Truly self-service, multi-tenant platform, giving direct, unfiltered access to cloud resources to staff (not IT brokered) Enforces a rigorous role-based access control (customer driven) and security design, customised to the specific security requirements of the different user communities. Implements a fully redundant, fail-safe architecture for service continuity, and disaster recovery capabilities in an active-active (asynchronous replication) configuration on two ESA sites Supports technical and commercial flexibility and scalability of the core cloud platform. With ability to grow quickly, as needs arise, and without immediate investments

10 From esacloud to scientific public cloud Looking further in the future a visionary role has been adopted leading the Helix Nebula initiative to create a scientific European federated public cloud capability. This has anticipated the creation of: A cloud-based federated flexible infrastructure of services and capabilities available to all; A strategic business capability for ESA to concentrate on the processing of data rather than on the infrastructure to manage it; A universal platform for the combination of data sets across domains for full public exploitation. 11 ESA IT: Cooperation and Industrial partnerships ESA, born to support the Space industry, values cooperation and close partnership with suppliers, also in IT. OBS is with ESA since 2000 sustaining an innovative approach allowing ESA to first in many areas (including the first European converged IP VPN on MPLS) OBS and ESA set up the first private cloud with European scale disaster recovery setup OBS is a key enabler of ESA cooperation mission with its member states and with the Space industry
