Create Prezi Prezi is a very cool web app that allows you to create presentations with a cool twist. Literally. You create a single "page" with multiple pieces of info that you can guide your user to. A neat way to show information when you want a change of pace from the standard presentation software. Definitely worth a look. Wikispaces (see our JS wiki, editable and collaborative) Voicethread A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate pages and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). Google docs Google Docs has grown to be one of the best and most powerful tools on the web. It is a full featured suite for people to collaborate on at the same time from anywhere with a simple web connection. You can also create forms and survey tools that make collecting data from students or peers very quick and easy. This is a tool that is changing the way the traditional "Office-type" suite of software is looked at. All the tools are free and they are all cloud or web based. Blogger (I prefer EDUBLOGS) Blogger is the popular tool from Google that allows users to create and host a freee blog site. Easy to use and dynamic, this is a great tool to start giving the students in your class a voice that can reach beyond the walls of the classroom. Make sure that you moderate the conversations for young students and you can also make the blogging experience a private one so that people without permission are denied access to the blog. Moodle Moodle is a course management system (CMS)- a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities. You can download and
use it on any computer you have handy (including webhosts), yet it can scale from a single-teacher site to a University with 200,000 students. A great service for educators. YouTube YouTube is a video-sharing website on which users can upload, share, and view videos. itunesu itunes U a powerful distribution system for everything from lectures to language lessons, films to labs, audiobooks to tours is an innovative way to get educational content into the hands of students. Podcasts A podcast is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication. Voicethread Wikispaces Wikispaces is a wiki building website that allows teachers to create a free wiki online. Wikispaces features all the standard options of a wiki editor and allows for flexible editing and embedding of code. It is fairly straightforward and easy to use. Great for group projects and WebQuests.
Evaluate Moodle Ning (social network & more), You tube Twitter Twitter is defined as micro-blogging. Essentially you can share "what you are doing" with your fellow twitterers and they can tweet back to you at their leisure. You can also directly message someone and "follow" other people's tweets. A great tool that can be used for reactionary blogging with students and also teaches students to be concise because a tweet must contain no more than 140 characters. Delicious (and diggo (social book marking), yahoo, stumble on (social book marking) del.icio.us is a social bookmarking site. Essentially it acts as an internet base for a collection of favorites - yours and everyone else's. Teachers and Students can use del.icio.us to keep links to your favorite articles, blogs, music, reviews, and more, and access them from any computer on the web. You can also share favorites with students, colleagues, and even the entire the del.icio.us community. This is a nice way to set up a WebQuest activity or make a safe way for students to find specific information online. Elgg (web conferencing tool) Elgg is a great and easy to use Social Network builder (similar to Ning) to allow you to create a safe on-line social place for your students or fellow teachers. It is closed to un-invited visitors and therefore remains fairly safe for school use. The features of the site are rich and simple to learn. Google alerts Wikipedia highliter
Analysing Mindomo A more "full-featured" online mind-mapping website. There are numerous available formatting options that allow you to customize the look of your mind map. Sub-topics can easily be collapsed or extended. Notes can be attached to any topic or sub-topic. You can embed links to websites. There are conveniently built-in collections of icons and images that can be used in your mindmap. You can also import images from the web, including your own images if they are stored on the web. Zoho (online suite of tools) Zoho is a suite of online applications (services) that you sign up for and access from their Website. The applications are free. The alternative to web-apps like Google Docs. Dimdim (web conferencing) You tube Voicethread Delicious Creative commons Creative Commons Search is a site that allows users to look for non-copyrighted material which they can use in classroom projects. You can look for Flikr photos, music, and even TV clips that are free for use anywhere in your classroom or on the web. A nice resource for teachers and students alike.
Applying Prezi Jing This is a powerful program from TechSmith, the company behind Camtasia. Jing makes it easy to capture still screen images or to create video screencasts, and then share them. This is invaluable if you want to help anyone else learn to use software, or do anything else on a computer. With Jing, it's a cinch to make a screen capture or a video that includes audio commentary. Once that's done, the image or video can be saved to your computer and/or stored online. Jing makes it convenient to share the online version. You simply paste the URL into an or chat and then send it along. Unless you are going to be sharing the screencast offline, there is no reason to save to your computer. You can go back to Jing any time to retrieve screencasts that you've made in the past. A great training tool, and a nice way for teachers to explain ideas to students on the computer, or vice versa. Itunes igoogle ning go2web2.0 voki Voki enables users to express themselves on the web in their own voice using a talking character. You can customize your Voki to look like you or take on the identity of lots of other types of characters, animals, monsters, anime etc. Your Voki can speak with your own voice which is added via microphone, upload, or phone. Voki lives on your blog, social network profile and will soon be integrated in various instant messaging platforms. You will also be able to download it to most video supported phones. This is a fun way to spice up your class webpage, with your animated self. Picassa The photo editing and sharing service from Google. It is a clean, easy to use, and fun way to create, edit, and share digital photos.
Understanding Twitter Skype A wonderful way to communicate with people around the globe, for free. As long as both users have this program installed on their computer and some way to communicate (microphone, webcam, even a Skype phone) they can collaborate and talk for free. The ideas are endless for integration of using Skype in the classroom. Think of chatting with a digital Pen-pal that lives in a foreign country. There are also web-forums set up where teachers can connect with other educators that would like to collaborate online using Skype in their classroom. TED (Technology, Entertainment & Design) Shutterstock (images like Picasa) RSS feeds RSS (most commonly expanded as Really Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video in a standardized format.[2] An RSS document (which is called a "feed","web feed",[3] or "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. Ning Blogger Youtube evernote (capture clips, info etc and share using the net) Evernote is a website that allows users to annotate the web. What is unique is the clean and very easy to use interface. In addition, it's a true three-platform play: it works very well, and somewhat differently, on desktop computers, mobile phones, and over the Web.
Remembering Firefox Web browser You tube Flickr See Big Huge Labs and Flickr This is a wonderful site filled with cool things to help make your digital photos into class projects or enhance their presentation value. Adding special effect, creating jigsaw puzzles, and making fake motivational posters are just a few of the great features. delicious
