10 When assessing applications we consider the following: - What is the heritage focus of the project? - What is the need or opportunity that the project is responding to? - Why does the project need to go ahead now and why is Lottery funding needed? - What outcomes will the project achieve? - Does the project offer value for money? - Is the project well planned and financially realistic? - Will the outcomes be sustained after the project has ended? 12 Omens and Inspirations Herschel Museum of Astronomy Applicant: Herschel Museum of Astronomy, Bath Grant Awarded: 8,100 The museum produced a new exhibition Omens and Inspirations marking the bicentenary of appearance of the Great Comet in The exhibition celebrated the achievements of Caroline Hershel and contemporary women scientists. Supporting learning and outreach programme including lectures, workshops, quizzes, volunteer training

13 Mining the Past Applicant: Radstock Museum Project: Radstock Museum worked with local schools to produce oral history recordings of former miners.. School children, volunteers and former miners will also visit the museum and attend field trips to former mine sites, A range of archival resources for the museum, schools and wider community will be created including audio visual recordings, booklet, DVD and exhibition. 15 Inside Glenside Applicant: Friends of Glenside Hospital Museum, Bristol Project: This 18 month project will enable the history of the Museum's collection, of treatment by medication, and mental health care generally, to be better understood and explained through an oral history project. The project will also include themed interpretation and an outreach activities programme. Heritage Lottery Fund Grant Programmes

17 Ancient Civilisations Applicant: Royal Institution of Cornwall Grant Awarded: 233,000 This funded the creation of a new permanent exhibition that showcases what it was like to live in Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, focusing on the star exhibit - Iset Tayef Nakht. Physical and intellectual access to the museum's most popular collections was improved and project delivered learning programme targeted to audiences. The new gallery was sympathetic to the collection and the building, improving their environmental conditions and stability.

18 Gold Hill Museum Renovation & Development Project Applicant: Shaftesbury and District Historical Society Grant Awarded: 400,000 The project involves restoring and conserving Gold Hill Museum and its collection through renovations to two listed buildings, providing space for education work and exhibitions, improve displays, interpretation and increase storage space and facilities. Volunteers will have an opportunity to gain new skills, learning programme and outreach work at schools.

19 Young Roots Involving young people aged between 11 and 25 in heritage Grants of between 10,000 and 50,000, for up to two years Decision in 8 weeks. Delivered through partnerships between a heritage organisation and a youth organisation

21 Harvesting Memories of Mid Devon Applicant: Tiverton and Mid Devon Museum Trust Partners: Young Farmers An intergenerational oral history project to capture and preserve the memories of the changing face of farming in the local area. Celebratory events will be held at local agricultural events over the summer of 2013 to raise awareness for the exhibition and to showcase the success of the project.

22 Salisbury Young Curators Applicant: St Edmunds Arts Trust Partners: Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum A group of young people will learn about the woollen industry of Salisbury and the development of local guilds associated with the industry. They will attend a series of workshops and sessions, create an outdoor exhibition as part of the Salisbury International Arts Festival and curate their own exhibition at the museum.

23 First World War - Small Grant Programme Small programme dedicated to First World War Purpose to allow communities and young people to engage with the Centenary of WW1 The programme will offer grants of 3,000 to 10,000 Heritage Lottery Fund Grant Programmes

Get advice and support from your Museum Development Officer Make sure the project will achieve HLF Outcomes Read carefully the introductory notes to the programme and the related help notes Think about developing activities and events early in the process if undertaking a capital project Think about who you need to involve and consult Research, plan and set out the project budget clearly
