CHATTING ON THE INTERNET

SOCIAL APPLICATIONS

SOCIAL APPLICATIONS Wechat Used with the majority to smart phones (ios, Android, Windows Phone, Symbian and Blackberry). including: video calls, moments (picture sharing), voice chat, group chat, shake, look around, and drift bottle (shake, look around and drift bottle allow strangers to connect with each other and form a friendship). PROBLEMS: - let users meet and connect with strangers - provides them with the approximate physical distance between users - This could possibly lead to dangerous meetings and encounters with strangers or even possible incidents of stalking.

WhatsAPP Groups can be created and members can send unlimited images, video and audio messages. Locations can be shared and with each message sent, delivery notifications are received. Possible Issues: - Previous issue of users info being hacked - it is still important that users protect their personal information, and be careful about the type of information they share using the app.

KEEK It claims to be a social video sharing revolution in which users can film short video clips which can be uploaded to their Keek profile much like a status update. Problems -opens you up to cyberbullying -video being reposted -

SNAPCHAT - allows users to have a conversation using photos, called snaps. - Snaps are shared with a friend - are viewable foronly 10 seconds. - The application also informs the sender if the snap has been copied or if a screen shot has been taken. Users can add captions to their snaps or even just send a drawing. PROBLEMS: Possible Issues: It has been documented that individuals have been using this app for sexting because the picture is only available for a limited amount of time. However, even if the user is aware that a screen shot is taken, it can still be shared which may have very serious consequences

OTHER SOCIAL NETWORKS Teen chat sites XBOXLIVE AND PS3

What is Twitter? - Twitter is a real-time information network powered by people all around the world - lets users share and discover what's happening now. - Users send 140-character messages through website and mobile site, client applications, or can be used with a variety of third-party applications.

SAFETY TIPS: Use a strong password. Watch out for suspicious links, and always make sure you re on Twitter.com before you enter your login information. Don't give your username and password out to untrusted third-parties, especially those promising to get you followers or make you money. Make sure your computer and operating system is up-to-date with the most recent patches, upgrades, and anti-virus software.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF Being cautious about the information you put on a blog or message boards Don t believe everything you re told Never make an appointment to meet in person with someone you have met on the Internet don t without the permission of your parents or another adult.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF CON T - If you do share photos or video of yourself, be aware that anything you broadcast can never be taken back. - Once it s out there, it s there for the whole world including your parents, Other family members including grandparents, teachers and strangers to see.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF CON T Open discussions with your parents If you have concerns about things you see on the Internet, or think someone else might be in trouble, tell them or another adult you trust.

GROOMING grooming occurs when a stranger spends months talking to a person and then lures that Child or Teen from the initial chat room contact into a real-life meeting.

HIJACKING OF ACCOUNTS Reports of offenders hijacking children s instant messaging accounts have doubled. Once the account is hijacked, you are talked into sending sexual pictures of yourselves with the promise of regaining control of your account. DON T OPEN S FROM SOMEONE YOU DON T KNOW!!!!

An offender can take control of a your account by guessing a weak password (one that is easy to guess), or by using a more elaborate scheme involving setting up a fake website and tricking you into giving up your personal information.

WEBCAM Skype/Facebook/Chat Rooms Leads to Webcam Widely Used by Predators to get children to expose themselves online Kids expose themselves using the Webcam DO NOT HAVE A WEBCAM IN YOUR BEDROOM

don t let other people including your friends convince you to do something you re uncomfortable with. They re not the ones who have to deal with the consequences.

SELF/PEER EXPLOITATION Sexting Sexting (is a combination of SEX and TEXTING) Definition: Is defined as youth creating, sending or sharing sexual images and/or videos with peers via the Internet and/or electronic devices. It usually involves exchanging images/videos through cell phone picture/video messaging apps. (Iphone, blackberry, Androids, social networks.

SELF/PEER EXPLOITATION Sexting This trend is becoming more serious as several sexting cases have resulted in criminal charges against youth for the creation, possession and/or distribution of child pornography. A recent survey of 1200 teenagers reported that 1 in 5 have electronically sent/posted nude or seminude pictures or videos of themselves;

SELF/PEER EXPLOITATION Dangerous: Sexting Once that digital image is created, though it may have been intended to live on only a cell phone and shared with only one person, it is inevitable that image will make its way to a computer, the internet, and then the world. Reputations destroyed Cyberbullying results Possible reason for suicide
