COIN ART Shreve & Co., San Francisco Silversmiths Coin Art Some of the most beautiful silver coin art of the 19 th century was made by Shreve & Co. Numerous pieces in this sale were made by Shreve & Co of San Francisco. The Company got its start during the California Gold Rush in 1852, and as such is one of the oldest businesses on the West Coast, if not the oldest continually operating business. George and Samuel Shreve got off to a great start by making high quality pieces for the newly rich gold miners and merchants. George Shreve loved the art of coins. He incorporated coins into his silver pieces in the old European style, and along the way developed some of his own unique traits. Many of George Shreve s pieces contain a gold wash in some manner on the piece, either inside a bowl or inside a lid of a two piece silver item. Very few of his pieces were signed, though the two salt shakers in this sale are both signed inside the cap. Shreve s silver coin art became in more demand over time. He had a penchant of using rare silver coins probably scarce at the time, or difficult to attain, which are considered rare today. Two fabulous examples are presented here, a Hawaii Dollar in a silver tray with gold wash and a silver tray with an 1891-CC Morgan dollar. Many of Shreve s other silver coin pieces are made with beautiful foreign silver coins. The following lots in the sale are known Shreve: 5351, 5352, 5353, 5355, and 5335 Lot # 5261 Early Encased Lincoln Cents Four encased Lincoln cents: 1910, 1926, and two from The two from 1928 are in circular New York Souvenir holders.
