1 INTRODUCTION The demand for 24 hour news access is increasing daily. As media consumers we have become accustomed to dedicated news channels, internet sites and radio stations, all designed to inform us of events as they unfold. Journalism is a dynamic and fast-paced field of study that involves dedication and continuous awareness of the world around you. It is an opportunity to truly develop and hone communication skills and work in an environment where no day is the same as the last. For those who are successful there are exciting career options, in areas such as print, digital and radio journalism. Students can learn more about the ethical and moral dilemmas associated with the profession and begin to understand the power and importance that accurate reporting can play in shaping society and its views towards certain events. JOINT AND POSTGRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES Not all students wish to study Journalism as a single subject, others have a general interest in several related fields and wish to broaden their study options. Popular combinations with journalism include: Creative writing, English language, English literature, Film studies, History, International relations and Media and communication. A Joint Honours course allows students to strengthen their understanding of core journalism modules as well as developing an understanding of how these can be applied in a variety of other scenarios. Whilst the joint honours courses are not NCTJ-accredited they do provide an excellent foundation of knowledge which many students will use as a stepping stone into related careers and some students will go on to complete NCTJ accreditation at a later stage. Once a student has completed their initial undergraduate qualification they do have the option of continuing their education to Master's level. Opportunities include Journalism MA and a whole selection of related courses that may also be of interest, for example, Public Relations and TV Scriptwriting.

2 CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE Students that are serious about a career in this field need to opt for a degree that makes them attractive employees to editors from a range of publications. One way that they can do this is by searching for a course that is accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), who set a high benchmark for graduates to reach. Editors and potential employers look for this qualification from graduates and it is therefore a valuable asset to any CV. In order to satisfy NCTJ criteria graduates must have undertaken a minimum of four weeks' work experience throughout their degree. In today s current economic climate securing a placement can be difficult and therefore students should research universities with strong, long-established industry links that can offer them the best opportunities possible in terms of work experience. Universities such as DMU have spent years cultivating strong working relationships with a number of local newspapers and radio stations plus national publications to ensure that we can offer students placements which suit a range of interests. It may also be worth considering whether or not a university has a strong student-led media department as part of its students' union. Most institutions currently run their own radio stations, newspapers and even television channels which can provide further avenues for work experience. Prospective students should also consider the shorthand element to a Journalism degree. This is an integral part of the syllabus with students needing to be capable of writing 100 words per minute in order to pass not only the NCTJ s criteria but also to impress editors. This element of the course is no doubt challenging and can cause even the most gifted of writers difficulty. Students can research shorthand techniques in advance to gain a better understanding of what will be expected of them. For those students who are perturbed by the strict NCTJ requirements but still interested in pursuing the subject then perhaps a non-accredited single honours or even a joint honours course is a more realistic option. Journalism courses do not simply just concern themselves with teaching students how to write, they give them the necessary skills to be able to analyse questions and the world around them and being able to articulate responses to a range of different situations. This style of working is of benefit in a whole range of careers, making journalism a highly valued degree. Students may wish to simply study the subject to further personal interest and to develop communication skills to an exceptionally high level before moving into a career in a different field. Whether studying towards an accredited course or a BA (Hons), the modules offered by both promise to create graduates that are proficient in research, analysis and critical thinking. These skills are not easy to acquire and therefore prospective students should look for a course whose teaching staff possess the necessary experience to teach them effectively. When researching a course students should look into the background of the academic staff they meet, many of whom will have previously worked as journalists or editors and who can bring their own experiences to their teaching and guidance.

3 A DAY IN THE LIFE Journalism students are expected to dedicate their academic studies to the development of their core writing skills, supported throughout their course through a series of lectures, seminars and workshops. On average students can anticipate approximately ten hours of timetabled hours a week but their schedule should also include a minimum of 25 hours self-study, made up of reading, revision, assignments and shorthand practice. Accredited Journalism courses have strictly defined core modules set by the National Council for the Training of Journalists, that form the majority of a student s syllabus for the first two years of their degree. In the final year students have the option to choose additional modules in a variety of different specialist areas to complement their remaining core ones. Traditionally Journalism courses comprise of relatively small cohorts (approximately 30 students per year group) and therefore the course only offers a small number of lectures. Instead the majority of the teaching takes place in lab workshops, giving students as many opportunities as possible to practice their writing. Work in the labs can consist of many different tasks including writing articles based on fictional examples, practising previous exam papers or going out and sourcing real life interest stories to write about. Assessment for the course is broken down into various different forms, each designed to test a different area of journalistic ability and to meet the standards required by the NCTJ. Throughout the course of the year students will be set essays and presentations, alongside their articles, to determine their level of understanding. At the end of the academic year each student is required to sit a series of NCTJ exams, which address areas such as court reporting and public affairs. They are also tasked with completing a shorthand exam, during this a student must demonstrate that they can successfully write 100 words per minute, a significant feat! Neither of these tests can be revised for, but throughout the year students must dedicate time to keep abreast of current affairs and practising their shorthand technique in order to secure the best marks possible. TYPICAL MODULES First year Second year Third year Practical journalism, Journalism skills, Media law, Inside journalism Practical journalism, News writing and journalism skills, Public affairs, Inside journalism Sports journalism, magazine journalism, Sub-editing and design, Forms and practices of radio, Political communication

4 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Interest in the subject has dramatically risen over the last few years and places on journalism courses are now at a premium. Competition is fierce as so few institutions are able to offer an accredited course at undergraduate level. For example, each year DMU will receive approximately 100 applications for only 20 places, leaving four out of every five applicants disappointed. Prospective students should be thinking about strengthening their applications well in advance of their final year of school in an attempt to stand out from their peers. Initially a student needs to concentrate on securing the correct academic portfolio of exam results and subjects studied. Entry onto all Journalism courses will be dependent on an applicant having received a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above including maths and English language. Please note that some universities are unwilling to accept Key Skills as a GCSE equivalent and students should therefore be aware of this. There are no required subjects for a student to have studied at FE level, however, admissions tutors are looking for evidence of an excellent standard of English (including spelling and punctuation) and a keen interest in current affairs. Therefore subjects that display a student s natural aptitude for these areas may be advantageous, for example, English, history and politics. UCAS entry points will vary between institutions but on average students can expect offers to range between 240 and 360 UCAS points. Most universities will accept these from either A Level, BTEC, Access to Learning or International Baccalaureate courses. Students working towards an alternative qualification should contact individual institutions to ascertain whether or not they are accepted. In addition to a strong academic background applicants must also have evidence of their own writing, pieces that have been created as part of a school/college course and independently. Essentially admissions tutors are looking for a full commitment to journalism and will anticipate that candidates will have taken measurable steps to demonstrate this through work experience. For students living in or close to city centres, placements in local newspapers and radio stations provide an excellent platform to gain not only a thorough understanding of the journalism industry but also the opportunity to try and write some of their own pieces for an audience. For students whose locations are a little more remote alternative work experiences will be considered. For example, a student may write regularly for a school newspaper or newsletter, enter national writing competitions and/or be a keen blogger. Students are expected to take all the necessary steps possible to gain work experience, and without it an application will be unsuccessful. For students wishing to apply for an NCTJ-accredited course there is also an entrance exam which must be completed at each of the universities that they have applied for. This two hour paper is broken into two sections. Section one tests an applicant's knowledge of current affairs through a series of multiple choice questions whilst section two is designed to assess their writing ability under timed conditions. The exam cannot be revised for, but all prospective students should be advised to regularly read daily newspapers such as The Times, The Independent and Guardian and follow major developing news stories.

5 APPLICATION SUPPORT Entry to accredited journalism courses is by no means easy. Students must meet not only academic criteria but also successfully pass entrance exams and an interview, while competing with their peers for only a handful of places. But before a student can begin to focus on these additional entry criteria they must first produce a personal statement demonstrating a complete commitment to the subject and passion for journalism as a career. Arguably one of the easiest ways to do this is to discuss any relevant work experience that they have undertaken. Admissions tutors are keen to hear about placements in local media, in particular how the time spent there motivated the student to further their studies in this area. Throughout their statement they should discuss staff members who they may have shadowed and indicate any skills that they observed as being particularly vital to their job role. Those students whose work experiences have been linked to their school (ie, writing for a school newspaper) or personal ones (ie, keeping their own blog or entering competitions) may wish to elaborate on how these experiences have given them first-hand knowledge of working towards strict deadlines or how writing pieces for an intended audience can alter the language and style used. Students should also use their statement as an opportunity to comment on current affairs that they have paid particular attention to or that they feel are significant. They may choose to discuss how the reporting of a recent event may have differed depending on which publication you were reading, and perhaps the impact that this may have had on shaping public perception. Essentially the admissions team want to see that the student can fully understand the power that communication has and the importance of reporting facts in a clear and concise manner. Their love for writing should be paramount and clear indication as to what drives this passion noted. Journalism is a difficult subject that requires 100% dedication, no matter how intense the workload may get this devotion should be the underlying theme throughout a student's personal statement.

6 INTERVIEWS The second stage of application is for the student to attend an interview. Course leaders of the accredited journalism degree interview not only to assess a student's writing ability and style but also to assess their suitability for a career within this profession. The actual interview process itself should last for approximately minutes, but students may be asked to allocate a whole day for the process to allow time to sit the entrance exam and for the admissions team to look over the portfolio of writing that each student will have put together. Most journalism interviews consist of a panel of academics and staff from the department asking a candidate a series of questions, ranging from their FE choices, their HE subject choice and also elements that a student may have discussed in their application. They will also be asked to expand on any points that they have covered within their personal statements. Students should take the interview as an opportunity to divulge more information than was possible on their initial application. Simply repeating exactly what is written in their personal statement is a waste of this opportunity, they should be aiming to provide the inter viewer with information that they were not previously aware of. A significant proportion of the interview is likely to involve some discussion of current affairs and while a student cannot necessarily prepare answers in advance they should be advised to spend time before the day familiarising themselves with recent news stories. Students will be expected to share their opinions of events and perhaps even particular reports of them so developed could prove vital analytical and critical thinking skills. Finally, students should prepare a portfolio of their own creative writing to bring on the day for admissions tutors to look over. This may consist of journalistic pieces, short stories, blog entries and so on. It should be neatly presented in a folder and where possible labelled to indicate the intended audience of the piece and if relevant the publication date. Please bear in mind that not all interviewers will have time to look over work that is brought to an interview (unless specifically asked for). Students are often welcome to leave their work to be looked over at a later stage but it is unlikely that this can be returned and therefore students should make copies of any original documents to bring with them. For those students who do write regularly for the web they should draw the interviewers' attention to this and provide them with the URL, this gives them an opportunity to look at even more of a students work at a later date.

7 JOURNALISM AT DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY (DMU) Students wishing to study journalism at DMU benefit from its NCTJ accreditation, making it one of only a few accredited undergraduate courses within the country to choose from. As part of our ongoing commitment to teaching excellence we offer all of our Journalism students access to four state-of-the-art computer labs, which include interactive white boards, plasma screen televisions and over 100 Macs, all running industry standard programs such as Quark Xpress and various desktop publishing packages. These facilities provide us with the scope to instil our students with skills and knowledge that are relevant within the industry today. In addition to this we are immensely proud of our strong links with organisations such as the BBC, ITV, GMTV, The Sunday Times, the Guardian and Q magazine as well as a whole host of local media. These contacts provide an excellent network which our students can use to secure work experience placements, employment and general advice and guidance. As part of our course we ensure that all of our students are taught Teeline shorthand to an excellent standard (over 100 words per minute). Initially students re-learn the alphabet, substituting the letters for symbols. They then practice writing, taking out vowels and double letters from their words in an attempt to speed up their note taking. Students soon become able to write words per minute, but getting to the goal of 100 takes patience and dedication. To ensure that our students manage this we have allocated a specific member of staff dedicated to coaching them. Securing work experience whilst at university can be difficult, students may not be in a financial position to dedicate long periods of time to working for free, or may feel that the demands of their course mean that they have little free time to allocate to a part-time position. Under these circumstances students should be encouraged to investigate the journalistic options available to them at their university. is proud to be able to offer its students the choice of three student-run media, The Demon newspaper, Demon FM and Demon TV. Students from all course areas are welcome to get involved with one or all three of the projects in a variety of roles including writers, presenters, and editors. For journalism students, the chance to spend three years developing their portfolio of work, try different roles and experience the demands of meeting deadlines is invaluable.

8 CAREER PATHWAYS Students graduating from s BA (Hons) course have excellent employment rates, with approximately 80% of them going on to work within the journalism field. They enjoy careers in a variety of different sectors and media including digital media, print journalism, television and radio. Industry professionals recognise our graduates as some of the top in their field, possessing all of the core skills necessary to be successful within their chosen pathway. Having employed several former DMU students as trainee reporters I am very impressed with the standard and thoroughness of their basic training They have been a credit to their course and to their tutors. I have also had no hesitation in the past in recommending a number of graduates from the course to fellow editors Brian Dodds Harborough Mail Editor Those choosing not to enter the journalism profession are still attractive to prospective employers who recognise the excellent communication skills that they possess. The remaining 20% of graduates go on to work in fields such as PR, teaching and advertising, utilising all of the skills that they have acquired. TEACHING AND ACADEMICS AT DMU Students undertaking a journalism course are not only studying the subject, they are studying the profession. Students benefit from learning about the realities of a career in this field and can use this information in their own work. It is therefore a significant advantage to enrol on a university course whose teaching staff is made up of academics that have all at one stage or another worked in journalism. At DMU all of our journalism teaching staff have enjoyed success as journalists and editors of a range of publications. Their experiences include a total of over 75 years in the sector, editing and writing for award-winning newspapers and magazines. The expertise that they bring to the university benefits all of our students; they can pass on practical advice based on real life scenarios and offer critique of student work that accurately reflects the demands of editors. They take an interactive approach to their teaching styles, encouraging students to develop their work by regularly reviewing the work of other classmates and discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each piece. This prepares students for the realities of working as part of a team within the journalism industry.

9 EXTRA CURRICULAR Securing work experience whilst at university can be difficult, students may not be in a financial position to dedicate long periods of time to working for free, or may feel that the demands of their course mean that they have little free time to allocate to a part-time position.
