What is Insect Shield? The active ingredient in Insect Shield products is permethrin. Insect Shield was granted the first-ever U.S. EPA registration of insect-repellent clothing in Insect Shield s current generation of technology allows for a longevity claim of through 70 launderings. Which is up to 35 times greater than a permethrin spray or dip method. ExxonMobil has approved its employees use of Insect Shield through 100 washes. Insect Shield technology can be applied to a wide variety of textile products from socks, hats, shirts, nets Copyright Insect Shield, LLC
Permethrin Treatment of Clothing is Recommended by Internationally Recognized Health Agencies The World Health Organization (WHO) The American Academy of Family Physicians The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (or NIOSH) The Public Health Agency of Canada Permethrin Treatment of clothing is widely recognized as beneficial in the battle against vector-borne diseases. Copyright Insect Shield, LLC
Insect Shield and the U.S. EPA The EPA s mission: to protect human health and the environment EPA review: Insect Shield s EPA registrations are based on rigorous review of efficacy and safety data produced using proven scientific methodology. A human bio-monitoring study done by Insect Shield further confirmed the safety judgment of the EPA. The patent-pending Insect Shield process is a 100% closed system, so no active ingredient is released into the environment during treatment. Copyright Insect Shield, LLC
Field study in Northern Kenya Use of insecticide-treated clothes for personal protection against malaria: a community trial (Kimani, E et al, 2006) Field study conducted in Dadaab, Northern Kenya and approved by ethical clearance board. Fundamental principles of ethics in studies with human participants were upheld throughout the study. A total of 198 participants were admitted to the study; 97 in the treatment group and 101 in the comparison group. Impregnation of personal clothes was done with permethrin for the treatment group and with water for the comparison group. Pre-test and post-test blood samples were taken. Results: the odds of malaria infection in the treatment group were reduced by 70% compared to the comparison group No side effects related to the use of impregnated clothing were observed with the participants during the study Copyright Insect Shield, LLC
Field study in Colombia Efficacy of Permethrin-Impregnated Uniforms in the prevention of malaria and Leishmaniasis in Colombian Soldiers (Soto, J et Al, 1995) Study conducted with the armed forces in malaria and leishmaniasis endemic areas in Colombia A total of 173 troops were admitted to the malaria study and 286 troops were admitted to the leishmaniasis study. 50% of the participants received permethrin impregnated shirt, undershirt, pants and socks; the remaining 50% received untreated clothing. Result: malaria infection in the treatment group was 75.5% lower than in the control group; leishmaniasis infection in the treatment group was 78 % lower than in the control group. Less than 1% of the individuals wearing permethrin impregnated uniforms reported irritation. Copyright Insect Shield, LLC
U.S. Army/U.S.D.A. research U.S. Army/U.S.D.A. research has quantified the effectiveness of permethrin-treated clothing for mosquito bite protection. Field study results show more than 97% reduction in bites, while wearing permethrin-treated clothing without additional repellent on exposed skin, at garment knockdown test rates of about 70%. 1 1 Schreck, Haile & Kline, The Effectiveness of Permethrin and DEET, Alone or in Combination, for Protection Against Aedes Taeniorhynchus, published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene 33 (4): (1984).
