3 IHO Hydrographic Committee on Antarctica (HCA) SEVENTH Meeting, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 3-5 October 2007 NATIONAL REPORT PERU DIRECTORATE OF HYDROGRAPHY AND NAVIGATION General From 1981 Peru is a consultative member of the Antarctic Treaty, with right of voice and vote for subjects related to the Antarctic Continent, having made 17 Antarctic expeditions until now. The Peruvian Navy, through the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation has played a determining function from the beginning of its Antarctic activities. Its capacity of logistical support, its promotional role of generation of investigation projects, its permanent presence in all the international events related to the Antarctica and its permanent support to the activities of our country in that continent, are part of its contribution to that Peru has fulfilled 15 years of uninterrupted work in the White Continent. Machu Picchu Peruvian Antarctic Station is located in the Mackellar Cove of the King George Island, one of the Islands of South Shetland located in the North end of the Antarctic Peninsula. SURVEYS The Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation, has carried out hydrographic and oceanographic works in the King Jorge Island. We have used as means of logistic transport and platform for the scientific researches, the HUMBOLDT research vessel. On board, launches equipped with hydrographic equipment are transported, which have carried out the following hydrographic surveys. OCEANOGRAPHY The Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation is in charge of the Oceanography Program in Antarctica, oriented to two topics of investigation: First, to carry out physical oceanography and marine dynamic works during the investigation cruises in Antarctica (Bransfield Strait, around the Elephant island and, to the north of the Shetland islands of South), and Second, physical, chemical oceanography and marine dynamic in the Mackellar Cove. Specifically the taking of data has been centered to determine circulation patterns, stability of the water column, distribution and development of masses of horizontal and vertical water, structures of the temperature, salinity and density of the sea water. On the other hand, in the Mackellar cove as opposed to Machu Picchu Peruvian Base, the works of Physical Oceanography, Chemical and Dynamic Marine, have been oriented to determine and to know the physic, dynamic chemistry environment and where they live and develop the hidrobiologic organisms, as well as, the support to the security and design of any type of infrastructure that will settle or construct in the coast, mainly in the processes of erosion and sedimentation in the coastline where the Peruvian base is located.

5 PUBLICATIONS Nautical publications of the Antarctica have not been published. S-55 The information of the surveys and cartography developed to update the existing Antarctic charting will be provided.
