3 Cruse Foundation Course Awareness in Bereavement Care( ABC) This training course has been designed to support the Cruse Service Model and Bereavement Care in Practice. It is a Foundation Course, for all volunteers and staff that have client contact, designed to provide the skills, awareness and knowledge for all volunteers and staff to be able to begin supporting bereaved clients. Learning Outcomes Demonstrate understanding of the main effects of grief and loss. Demonstrate acceptance of people as individuals, recognising and respecting diversity. Establish and maintain awareness of self/ client within the supportive relationship. Respond to the differing needs of bereaved people. Enable the client to understand their grief and cope with their loss. Recognise and understand issues surrounding risk factors, trauma, and complex grief. Demonstrate skills including empathy, listening and reflecting. Demonstrate knowledge of the main practical and legal issues facing a bereaved person. Have knowledge of theories and models of grief, recognising how they may be useful in helping clients. Keep appropriate records Be open to feed back from service users. Use supervision effectively. Explain the range of services.
4 Demonstrate an understanding of key Cruse policies. Undertake assessment and appropriate referral to other agencies. The Foundation Course ( ABC) is 60 hours in total comprising of eight, six hour training sessions usually held at week ends, plus a further two modules,6hours each consisting of A Childs Grief and Sudden & Traumatic Death which will be completed during the first 12 months of volunteering with Cruse. It is requirement that you attend a minimum of 14 out of 16 training sessions. Students are required to maintain a Portfolio of work comprising of personal record sheets from each session, exercise sheets, peer feed back on skills work, own evaluation and reflection on learning which is continuously being assessed throughout the Course. In accordance with Cruse Council a number of Portfolios will be selected at random for external moderation. Application Process Application forms can be obtained from the address on the last page of this leaflet. Two References are required from non family members and people who have known you for at least 15 months. All volunteers are required to undergo Disclosure & Barring Service check. After training individuals who wish to become volunteers for Cruse will be selected by interview. All volunteers (irrespective of role within the Branch) are required to attend monthly supervision and complete at least 15 hours of continuation training per year.
5 The Cruse Foundation Course Awareness in Bereavement Care Course Syllabus The Learning Models used throughout this Course are ASK, (Awareness Skills and Knowledge) and FTA (Feelings Thoughts and Actions) Session 1 and 2 Introductions. Welcome Aim: To model a warm welcome Introduce self and Training team. Ice breaker Skills, Practice Aim: To introduce names by using an exercise that draws on or uses communication skills and gives experience of self-disclosure.. Course Structure, A Description Aim: To reinforce the pre-course information that has been given about the structure and models used in the course Ground Rules Agreement, A practical exercise. Aim: To encourage group participation to create a safe learning environment. Learning Process, A Description Aim: To explore the process of learning.
6 Change and Loss-Life Changes, A Practical Exercise Aim: To challenge the concept of life stages. Personal Loss,A practical exercise Aim: To explore the concept of loss and attachment. Loss and Help, Skills Practice Aim: To use trainees personal experiences to explore methods of help. What is Grief? A Description Aim: To explore the meaning and understanding of grief. Theories and Models of Loss and Grief, A Description.Aim: To have an overview of the main theories and models that have informed our understanding to the present day. The Cruse Service Model Scenarios, A practical exercise. Aim: To begin to explore the range of services offered by Cruse. Ending and Link work. Aim: To model a good ending ensuring that trainees are not dwelling on issues raised and are informed of the linkwork.
7 Session 3:Supporting Through Active Listening Welcome Back Review thoughts feelings actions since last session. Who Are We? Exploring Diversity, A practical exercise. Aim: an opportunity for trainees to explore diversity. Relationships: Core Qualities and Core Conditions, A description. Aim: to introduce the concept of the core conditions for effective working. The Importance of Good Listening, A description. Aim: To introduce this valuable key skill. Giving and Receiving Feedback, A Description. Aim: To show the value of giving and receiving feedback appropriately. Non-verbal Communication, A Description using Argyle and Egan. Aim: To show the vital importance of non-verbal communication. Skills Practice. Aim: An opportunity to practise, in a safe environment, listening, giving and receiving feedback, using core conditions while also being aware of non-verbal communication. Ending and Linkwork. Reflect on and review session.
8 Session 4: Death in Our Changing Society Welcome back Review thoughts,feelings, actions since last session. Attitudes to Death and Dying, Skills Practice. Aim: to raise awareness of personal attitudes towards death and dying. Death in Society, A Group Discussion Aim: An opportunity to discuss the extent of bereavement, changing rituals and customs and the main practical and legal issues facing a bereaved person. Maggie s Story, A practical exercise. Aim: To hear a client s story and to identify more clearly feelings, thoughts and actions and the connections between them. Dimensions of Grief, A Description. Aim: To emphasise the huge impact of grief. Ending and Linkwork..Reflect on and review the session.
9 Session 5: Grief in Families. Welcome Back Review feelings, thoughts and actions since last session. The Family, a discussion. Aim: To enhance awareness of what the term family means. Questioning Styles, a discussion and skills practice. Aim: To raise awareness of the importance of questioning skills. Genogram, a practical exercise. Death in The family, a practical exercise followed by a discussion. Ending and Linkwork. Reflect on and review session.
10 Session 6: Key Counselling Skills. Welcome Back Review feelings, thoughts and actions since last session. More Basic Counselling Skills. Aim: To review and reinforce trainees learning and to develop more basic skills. The Supportive Process. Aim: To identify the skills used within the supportive process. Paraphrasing and Reflecting a practical exercise. Aim: To develop paraphrasing and reflective skills. Clarifying and Summarising, skills practice. Aim: To develop clarifying and summarising skills. The Dual Process Model of Grief. Aim: To develop an understanding of the Dual Process model and link with practice. Ending and Linkwork. Reflect on and review session.

Assessment. Aim: To highlight the importance of assessment throughout our work to ensure that client s needs are met. Aim: To explore complicated grief reactions and the factors that put someone at particular risk. Working with Anger and Guilt,a practical exercise. Aim: To explore strong emotions and increase confidence when working with anger and guilt. Depression Aim: To create an awareness and understanding of depression as part of the grieving process. Bereavement by Suicide Aim: To create an awareness of some of the specific issues associated with bereavement by suicide. Suicide Risk. Aim: To prepare Bereavement Volunteers to deal with the expression of suicidal thoughts. Ending and Linkwork. Reflect on and review the session.
16 Session 13: The Realities of Being a Bereavement Volunteer. Welcome Back Review feelings, thoughts and actions since last session. Hopes and Anxieties a practical exercise. Aim: To share hopes and explore concerns related to providing bereavement support. Skills Practice-Goal Setting. Aim: To introduce the concept of goal setting as a tool for helping clients. Practical issues Affecting Bereaved People. Aim: To raise awareness of the practical issues bereaved people may face and our ability to signpost them towards other help. Ending and Linkwork. Reflect on and review the session.
17 Session 14: Preparing for Endings. Welcome Back. Review feelings thoughts and actions since last session. Positive and Negative Endings. Aim: To raise awareness of endings, their importance and potential difficulties. Difficult Endings, a practical exercise. Aim: To consider different perceptions of endings. After the Ending. Aim: To stress the importance of procedures attached to endings. Skills Practice. Ending and Linkwork. Reflect on and review session.

Grief Theories and Models: A Bigger Picture Aim: To raise awareness of contemporary thinking around grief and bereavement and enhance commitment to ongoing professional development.
