Catalog Description: The development of fluency in writing clear, forceful, effective prose. 50% of this class s coursework will be completed online in WebCT. Pre- and/or Co-Requisites: Placement through the College Testing and Placement Program or completion of ENGL 051 with a grade of C or higher. ENGL 003 is a pre- or corequisite. Please note: if you are taking ENGL 003 and ENGL 101 at the same time, you cannot drop (or be dropped from) ENGL 003 without also being dropped from ENGL 101. Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to: Organize compositions using the writing process as a systematic and on-going strategy Organize essays effectively by using focused paragraphing to support ideas appropriately with specific and credible evidence Locate, read, and evaluate college-level resources and present citations in an academicallyaccepted format and documentation style Demonstrate critical reading and critical thinking skills by integrating the ideas of others through the analysis and synthesis of information Adapt writing to various audiences by refining sentences for clarity, variety, and appropriate diction Employ grammatical conventions suitable to audience and purpose
2 Assignments & Grading Discussions (original post + 2 responses): (55 points) Reading Journals (250 words/1 full page): (36 points) Exercises (grammar/mechanics/mla): (16 points) Essay One ( Academic Integrity ): (10 points) Essay Two ( Chinese Mothers ): (20 points) Essay Three ( Who has it better? ): (30 points) Essay Four (TBA): (20 points) Weekly Discussions: Think of the weekly discussion postings and replies as the kind of discussion we would have in a face-to-face class, except that we have to do the discussions in writing. My role in the discussion is as observer and facilitator. I will be reading all messages and participating in the discussion as appropriate, but mostly the onus is on you students to start and sustain the discussion. The weekly discussion can be found in Discussions. Our discussions have three parts: Your post in response to the general question: I will ask a general question to get things going; sometimes the question will have several parts. o Your post should offer an answer to the question. If you fail to post a response to the question, you will receive no credit for any replies you post to your classmates. o It should make reference to (quote) the week s reading(s). o It should run between 100 and 150 words (if typed in MS Word, this would be about half a page, 12 point font, double-spaced). o It should be grammar- and spell-checked. Your replies to two of your classmates posts (2 points). o Respond to the person above and below you in the Discussion thread. o Wait 24 hours to post replies not all of us are going to be online at the same time. o Your replies should run between 100 and 150 words each. o They should reference your classmates original posts and build on their ideas: question them, challenge them, offer additional insights. o They should be grammar- and spell-checked. Your responses to your classmates responses (2 points). o Check for replies to your original post and reply in a timely manner (within 24 hours is a good general rule). o As with the other posts, your responses should run words and they should begin by referencing something in your classmates reply to you. Discussions open at 12:30 am on Mondays and close at 11:30 pm on Sundays.
3 Reading Journals: These accompany the week s assigned readings and/or build into the unit s essay. Reading journal prompts are located in the Dropbox. These are graded (or the equivalents of - + ) and I use them to give writing advice. I also use journals to point out grammar and mechanical issues I rarely mark grammar on essays (but I do deduct points for it). General reading journals guidelines: Journals should run pages, double-spaced, 12 point font. They should be grammar- and spell-checked before being submitted. Journals should be submitted as.doc,.docx or.pdf attachments do not attach files created in Microsoft Open Office (.odt) or Microsoft Works (.wps) because I cannot open them and, therefore, I cannot grade them. No late journals will be accepted. Journal submissions open at 12:30 am on Mondays and close at 11:30 pm on Sundays. Exercises: These are small assignments to help you brush up on grammar concepts and to help you with the writing concepts we ll be covering in class. Exercises will be drawn from the LB Brief Handbook as well as an external site, Write Site (link provided in D2L). Exercises are located in the Dropbox. Exercises open at 12:30 am on Mondays and close at 11:30 on Sundays. Essays: These are the culmination of each unit. They require you to think critically to make connections between a unit s readings, and to share your ideas clearly and coherently. Essay prompts and specific assignment details are located in the Dropbox. General essay formatting guidelines: Essays must follow MLA rules: o Font: 12 point Times New Roman or Calibri font o Spacing: double-spaced, with no extra spacing before or after paragraphs o Margins: 1-inch margins all around o Pagination: last name + the page number in the upper right corner of every page. No cover page is necessary, but the first page should include, on the upper left, o Your name, spelled correctly o Your class and section (either English 101 V01 or English 101 V02) o My name, spelled correctly o The date Essays should be titled, and the title should not be underlined
4 Other important information: Essays are due by 11:30 pm on their due dates. No late essays will be accepted unless proof of an excused absence is furnished to me within 24 hours of the original due date (see Student Handbook, AP 661 for definition of Excused. My Grading Philosophy (brace yourself!) I operate under the traditional principle that C not A is average. I understand that you have a life outside of class I have one, too and I also understand that you may give other things in your life priority over English 101 essays. If you do the minimum required of you to pass, I don t take it personally but then you cannot take it personally if you do the minimum required and earn a C. Please know now that I do not and cannot! consider the following when grading your work: the time or effort you put into the assignment remember that although writing is a process, I can grade only the final product. any GPA requirements you may have I realize many of you need to earn certain grades for entering nursing clinical, transferring to other schools, and maintaining financial aid. But those responsibilities are yours as students. My responsibility as a professor is to maintain the academic integrity of this course and the College by grading fairly and consistently. Grading Scale: Grades are computed on a standard scale, with 90% and up being an A, 80-89% a B, and so on. If, at semester s end, your grade computes to within 0.05% of a higher grade, then I will round it up (e.g., if you earn 79.5%, you will receive a B for the semester). I do not offer extra credit, only actual credit. Course and Classroom Policies Policy on Attendance: You are expected to log in to all online modules and to participate in the course s weekly discussions. New financial aid regulations demand that you demonstrate academic engagement to remain enrolled in the course. To this end, if you fail to participate for six consecutive days, you will be terminated from the course.
5 Policy on Late and Make-Up Work: All assignments are due by 11:30 pm. No late journals or discussion postings will be accepted for credit. Late essays will only be accepted if you provide me of proof of an excused absence. Technical difficulties are not an excuse for late submission of Online Work. If you experience difficulties with D2L, visit the College s D2L FAQ page, or call or the Desire2Learn HelpDesk at or helpdesk@desire2learn.com Policy on Academic Dishonesty (Plagiarism): Not only is it incredibly rude not to give credit where credit is due, it s also illegal. The following constitute plagiarism: missing in-text (parenthetical) citations giving source material for words you have quoted, paraphrased, or summarized from someone else s writing; missing quotation marks around quoted material even if you have provided an in-text citation for the material; no Works Cited page at the end of your essay; in-text citations that do not match the content of the source being cited; and in-text citations that do not match the sources listed on the Works Cited page. Plagiarism intentional or unintentional in an assignment automatically earns a 0. Two plagiarized assignments automatically result in failure of the course. Policy on W and I Grades Withdrawal from the course: The last day to withdraw from the course with a W grade is Wednesday, August 12th.
