2 2017 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN & LAW ENFORCEMENT CONFERENCE WELCOME The International Association of Women Police (IAWP) and the Australasian Council of Women and Policing (ACWAP), supported by the Queensland Police Service (QPS) are delighted to host the 2017 International Women & Law Enforcement Conference. For the first time, this global event will be held in Cairns, Queensland, Australia - an excellent opportunity to showcase the beauty of tropical North Queensland. Cairns is known for its community spirit, which aligns perfectly with the conference's theme. The chosen theme Global Networks: Local Law Enforcement was selected to highlight the importance of partnerships and celebrate the cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the community around the globe. ACWAP and IAWP are renowned for delivering world class events to promote women and law enforcement. The conference will incorporate the 55 th IAWP Annual Training Conference & Award and Recognition Programs, together with the 10 th Biennial ACWAP Conference and the 19 th ACWAP Excellence in Policing Awards. Experts from national and international law enforcement agencies, family and community agencies, legal representatives, academics, researchers and community groups all collaborate to make these event's a resounding success. The 2017 International Women & Law Enforcement Conference is an exciting opportunity for Australasian police and law enforcement partners to join our global community and enhance women in law enforcement and other community protection roles. A WORD FROM OUR PATRON G day, I am so excited to be the Patron of the 2017 International Women & Law Enforcement Conference being held in Cairns, and together with Bindi and Robert, we are delighted for Australia Zoo to be the Ambassador of the conference. I have always supported our law enforcement and emergency services both locally, nationally and internationally. The contribution that each and every one of you make to the safety and security of your communities is commendable and we are honoured to be able to support this very important conference. I do urge you, while you are visiting the beautiful state of Queensland to take the time and explore the beautiful rainforests together with the incredible Great Barrier Reef and experience all of our awesome wildlife. 3 CONFERENCE LOCATION Cairns is the gateway to Tropical North Queensland. The Cairns Northern Beaches, Port Douglas and the Daintree Rainforest are to the north while the Atherton Tablelands are to the west surrounded by rainforests. To the south of Cairns you will find mountainous countryside with beautiful crater lakes and waterfalls, and looking to the east lies the magnificent Great Barrier Reef - past the calm water of Trinity Bay and beyond to the Coral Sea. The 2017 International Women & Law Enforcement Conference will be held in the award winning Cairns Convention Centre. With capacity in the plenary sessions for over 1200 delegates and multiple breakout rooms for the afternoon streams - comfort will not be an issue. All conference associated activities, including the Welcome Reception, the ACWAP Excellence in Policing Awards Dinner and the Farewell Dinner will be held at the Cairns Convention Centre, commencing with Registration on Sunday 17 th September. It has international flights with onward connections to Europe and North America. There are direct flights from all Australian cities with Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar. Taxis and regular bus shuttles are readily available from Cairns Airport. 3

Cairns weather has 2 distinct seasons - a warm dry season from April to November and a wet season from November to March with tropical monsoons and tropical cyclones. The maximum temperature on average for September is 28 c with the minimum temperature 18 c. Couple at Mossman Gorge Visitors to Far North Queensland need strong sunscreen because of the climate. But most importantly... remember to bring a hat. During the summer months Cairns weather is quite hot and can easily damage fair skin. Generally the nights are mild so dress in light clothing. The dress standards at most venues is casual tropical wear that is neat and tidy with footwear. 5 CONFERENCE PROGRAM This year s theme of Global Networks: Local Law Enforcement highlights the importance of partnerships and celebrates the cooperation that exists locally, nationally and internationally. A number of topics will be addressed during the conference. International renowned plenary speakers will present at the conference each morning with delegates attending selected specialised themed streams in the afternoon. Topic streams may include presentations on: Safety & Wellbeing Women & the Judicial System Operational Policing Evidence Based Policing Leadership Women, Peace & Freedom Domestic & Family Violence Social Media Ethics & Corruption Indigenous & Multicultural Engagement Abstract Submission Guidelines A call for abstracts will occur between early September and late November 2016, with the successful authors being notified at the end of February Abstracts must be written and presented in English, and not exceed 300 words (text only). Abstracts are evaluated according to the following criteria: relevance to the conference theme interest to an international audience professional merit contribution to knowledge, practice and policies clarity of abstract Authors biographies are to be submitted with the abstract and all biographies to be written in third person INTERNATIONAL WOMEN & LAW ENFORCEMENT CONFERENCE All authors whose abstracts are selected to be presented at conference are required to register for the conference and pay the appropriate registration fee, to confirm that they intend to attend conference. Travel and accommodation costs are also at the author s expense. It is the responsibility of the presenting author to ensure the abstract is submitted correctly. The conference managers will not be held responsible for abstract submissions not received via the online submission process, or for submission errors caused by internet service outages, hardware or software delays, power outages or unforeseen events. The Australasian Council of Women and Policing Inc. is an independent body that aims to be a leading Australasian organisation in: participating in the global network of women in policing; improving the opportunities and outcomes for women within policing; and improving the policing services provided to women. The Purpose of the Excellence in Policing Awards The Excellence in Policing Awards are an opportunity to publicly acknowledge and reward the achievements of women and men who are contributing to improving policing and law enforcement and ensuring policing services are enhanced for women. The Awards acknowledge the work being undertaken in Australasia to ensure that women s concerns and needs are taken into account by policing and law enforcement. 7 IAWP AWARD AND RECOGNITION PROGRAMS International Association for Women Police The mission of the International Association for Women Police is to strengthen, unite and raise the capacity of women in policing internationally. IAWP envisions a world where police reflect the diversity of the communities they serve and where human rights are protected. Their guiding values are: embrace diversity be open, honest and fair listen to IAWP members change to improve The Purpose of the IAWP Award and Recognition Programs The IAWP Awards provides recognition of the significant contribution made by female police officers from around the world and are an international honour for women in policing professions. There are two types of competitive programs under the IAWP Awards and Recognition, which recognise women officers who by their overall service and accomplishments throughout their careers, have distinguished themselves in areas of leadership, community service, mentoring and excellence in performance. The IAWP's highest form of honour is the IAWP Heritage Award, and is awarded at the discretion of the IAWP. 9 COMPANION PACKAGE Day 2: Green Island, Great Barrier Reef & Underwater World Day 2 of the package starts with a fast catamaran cruise to the world famous Green Island, a 6000 year old coral cay located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Here you have an exciting range of optional activities to explore this tropical paradise. Start with a self guided Island Eco Walk and learn of the rich history of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. Silent Auction As at all other IAWP Conferences there will be a Silent Auction of items, donated by delegates. Every day items are put on display and delegates can register a bid for the item they would like to purchase. At the end of the day each item is sold to the person who has placed the highest bid, with proceeds going to worthwhile causes. Please bring to Cairns things you would like to donate for the auction. Traditional craft work and souvenirs from around the world as well as memorabilia from law enforcement agencies are all popular items. Coffee breaks and lunches Scheduled coffee breaks and lunches are included in the full conference registration fee. Letter of Invitation Upon request, the Director of the Organising Committee will be pleased to send a personal letter of invitation to enable participants to obtain supporting funds or visas to attend the conference.
