3 Glasgow Gold GHA s tenant reward scheme GHA Community Chest Grant Lots of benefits Welcome to Glasgow Gold - our reward scheme for GHA tenants. As a Glasgow Gold member you can access a range of fantastic rewards. These include: 77 Community Chest Grants to help with projects that benefit a group or community you are involved in 77 Education Grants to assist with the costs of training or a course you are on 77 Business Start-Up Grants to assist with setting up your own business 77 Home Contents Insurance - at a discounted rate to make insurance more affordable 77 ipad giveaway to help you access the internet. We re ready to help your commmuity Are you a member of a community group, sports team or club? Did you know, as a Glasgow Gold member, you can apply for a Community Chest grant of up to 500? Community Chest grants are awarded to non-profit making groups for specific projects or activities. We typically support projects that have a wider benefit to the community and to Glasgow. Page 4
4 GHA Community Chest Grants Here are some examples of how your group could benefit from one of these grants. St Thomas Primary School Successfully applied for a Community Chest grant for some outdoor playground games for the pupils. Chirnsyde Primary School A Community Chest grant helped to buy books for those attending their paired reading and parent partner reading programmes. Elmslie Court & Church Street Sheltered Housing Received funding for relaxation and hairdressing sessions. The relaxation classes were aimed at giving the tenants the chance to learn some new techniques to combat stress. The hairdressing sessions allowed the tenants to get treatments they would not otherwise get themselves. Pollokshields Early Years Centre Garden Planning Committee Received a Community Chest grant to renovate their outside area. As the area is completely covered in tarmac, it did not provide an appealing space for children to play in. The funding they received meant they could buy pots, planters, soil, bulbs, seeds and gardening tools. Improving this area means the children can take their learning outdoors and further develop their knowledge of nature, planting and growing. North Glasgow Healthy Living Community Received funding for their seventh annual Fun in the Park event. The event, aiming to bring local people together to have fun, attracted about 6,500 people of all ages from the north of Glasgow. Lots of fun activities were available including bouncy castles, adventure courses, mountain biking and face painting. GHA Community Chest Grant Who can apply? You should be a Glasgow Gold member, actively involved with the applying organisation. The organisation does not have to be a registered charity or charitable organisation but does have to be a formally constituted group with a: 77 Constitution / Article of Association, and 77 Bank account / statement of accounts We need this information to ensure your group is who they say they are and so we can make payment of your grant. How to apply All you need to do is complete the application form enclosed and return it to: FREEPOST NAT22631 Glasgow Gold Glasgow Housing Association 177 Trongate Glasgow G1 5BR If you need any help completing the form or have any questions you can call us 9.00am 5.00pm on or glasgow.gold@gha.org.uk Approval A panel, including tenant Board members, reviews all grant applications on a monthly basis. This is done on the second Monday of every month and we will be in touch within seven days to let you know if you have been successful. Page 6
5 GHA Education Grant GHA Education Grant Do you qualify for course funding? Our Education Grant can help you with course costs. Do you need help paying for further education or vocational training? Did you know as a Glasgow Gold member you may be entitled to a grant of up to 500 to help with the costs of your course? Past Successes See how our Education grants have helped these Glasgow Gold members. Katy A GHA tenant in Govanhill Katy came to us during the fourth and final year of her BA (Hons) in Journalism and English at Strathclyde University. Katy started her course in 2001 and had overcome all sorts of hurdles to get where she was. She had a lot of books to read as part of her course, which were expensive to buy and which the university library did not stock in adequate numbers for the whole class to use. I couldn t have done it without those books, and I mean that sincerely. EDUCATION GRANT Glasgow Gold bought around 20 of the books Katy required, some of which are out of print and had to be sourced from America. Katy has now finished her course and gained a first class honours degree. She wants to encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of the grants on offer. Page 8
6 GHA Education Grant Lesley Anne Lesley Anne from Castlemilk, received grants for two years of study towards her Criminal Justice degree at the University of the West of Scotland. She used most of her grant to pay for travel costs as she had to travel from Castlemilk to the university s Paisley campus every day. The rest of the grant went towards books. As Lesley Anne herself says up to date books equals up to date knowledge which is essential in this type of course, and the university library doesn t have many to go around. Lesley Anne is hoping to go on and complete her doctorate but was taking it one step at a time and concentrating on her honours year first. Michelle Michelle lives in the east end of the city and was studying for an NQ in Hairdressing at John Wheatley College. She has three children, the youngest of which was only five when she applied for her grant. Michelle used her grant to pay for after school care for her youngest child and, now she has finished her course, can take up full time employment, working round her children. To find out how an Education Grant could help you in your studies please contact us. GHA Education Grants Recently we have helped tenants with payments towards course fees, IT equipment, books and travel costs. Our education grants are awarded to individuals taking further or continuing education. Whether you re about to start a new course or are finding it tough to keep up with spending, it doesn t matter. Who can apply? Glasgow Gold members How to apply All you need to do is complete the application form attached and return it to: FREEPOST NAT22631 Glasgow Gold Glasgow Housing Association 177 Trongate Glasgow G1 5BR If you need any help completing the form or have any questions you can call us on or glasgow.gold@gha.org.uk The aims of the education grant are: 77 To financially assist Glasgow Gold members that would otherwise be unable, or face hardship, starting or completing, further or higher education; and 77 To financially assist Glasgow Gold members that want to start or complete education that will provide them with employable skills.
