2 Italian Language Program Language is the passport to personal mobility, opportunity and prosperity. At Bulimba State School we are passionate about language learning. We strive to develop Connected Learners students who are engaged, interested and enthusiastic about exploring the world and capable of working with others. Learning a foreign language stimulates the brain and enhances cognitive development. Research shows that learning a second language: Enhances communication skills and builds confidence. Teaches discipline and improves concentration. Broadens understanding of other cultures. Why Italian? Italian is, and has been for many years, one of Australia s major community languages. As Italian is widely spoken in Australia, many opportunities exist to hear and use the language in real-life situations. At Bulimba State School we make actual and virtual connections with Italian communities in Italy as well as being part of an international internship program to broaden learning opportunities. Italian belongs to the Romance family of languages which includes French, Spanish and Portuguese. It has many connections with English, sharing Latin derived words and a Roman alphabet. Although there are points of difference, overall the Italian language is not linguistically or culturally distant for English-speaking learners. Our Learners Learners of Italian at Bulimba State School come from a wide range of backgrounds, including students who: are learning Italian for the first time; have existing connections with Italian as 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd generation Italian Australians; may have experience in Italian or other Romance languages. We cater for learners from different backgrounds and abilities by adjusting our teaching programs. Prep Year 3 Language learning starts in Prep with age-appropriate activities such as songs, games and puppets to tap into the inquisitive, playful nature of young children and help them grow attuned to the melodic sounds of the Italian language. Students in Prep participate in one ½ hour Italian lesson weekly; in Years 1 3 students have two ½ hour lessons per week. In Early Years classes, learning activities are organised within Topics such Food, Pets, Families, Travel, Colours and Numbers. Years 4 6 Language learning in the Middle Years builds upon these rich experiences. Although the complexity of tasks may increase, maintaining a love of language learning is our prime objective. The program is organised into Units of work which take approximately a term to complete. Students in Year 4 have two ½ hour lessons and in Years 5 & 6, three ½ hour lessons per week. We look forward to guiding our students to be creative and confident learners who develop a life-long enjoyment of Italian language and culture! Saluti da Connie Harley (Prep Year 3) Larissa Vecchio (Years 4 6)

3 Music Program 1. The Bulimba State School Music Curriculum Program is based on: The Australian National Curriculum Requirements as set out by Education Queensland through its publications Requirements as stipulated in the Bulimba State School Curriculum Overview The needs of the local community including parent, students and educators As outlined in the Australian National Curriculum, The Arts Foundation Year 10, the subject of Music is investigated with reference to its musical elements as well as its social, cultural and historical contexts. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives are embedded within the program. The Music Program aims to provide students with the opportunity to participate in musical activity in a safe and caring environment, which will be enjoyable and enhance their self-esteem; develop and refine students musical skills and provide a foundation for developing active and informed members of society. 2. Time: Students have a half hour Music lesson each week 3. Resources: Year 1 students require a scrapbook which is kept in the Music Room and used until the end of Year 3. Year 4 students require a folder which is kept in the Music Room and used until the end of Year Code of Conduct: Music lessons are often physical singing, dancing, playing percussion instruments etc., therefore student behaviour rules, similar to their own classrooms, are in place to heighten students involvement and safety. Students have a clear understanding of the behaviour required. Although the environment in which the students work is very different, high behaviour standards are expected and rewarded. Positive behaviour is rewarded and highlighted during lessons. Students study a broad range of Music from many styles and cultures and are taught and encouraged to participate actively with an open and critical mind. 5. Choir: Bulimba State School has two choirs Junior Choir and Senior Choir. Junior Choir is held on Thursday mornings in the Music Room from 7.45am 8.30am. Senior Choir is held during Thursday lunch break in the Music Room from 1.15pm to 2.00pm. Students teachers are made aware of their participation in Choir. Throughout the year the choirs perform on parade, for special events, in and outside the school, as well as in competitions. 6. Assessment and Reporting: Music is one of the Key Learning Areas within our curriculum. Each semester an individual assessment is written for each student within our school in Years 1 6. Assessments are based on the skills demonstrated by students in Music class, student participation, enthusiasm and behaviour. Assessment and reporting is designed to plan future learning experiences and help improve student learning outcomes. Best Wishes Andrea Schache MUSIC TEACHER

4 Physical Education Program 1. Code of Conduct: During a Physical Education lesson, student behavior rules are similar to their own classrooms. Students have a clear understanding of the behaviour required. Although the environment in which the students work is very different, high behaviour standards are expected and rewarded. Positive behaviour is rewarded verbally during the lesson and I also use their classroom systems already in place. 2. Participation: Participation in all Physical Education lessons is expected unless a note for a genuine reason, is given to the classroom teacher. 3. Swimming: Years 1-6 swim term 1 and term 4 (Prep: 5 weeks in term 4). All students are expected to wear a swimming cap and a sun shirt to comply with our school sun safety policy. All students are expected to participate 100% of the time unless they have a note. We employ a qualified swimming teacher aide who works with the Physical Education teacher and the classroom teachers to implement our school swimming program. School house coloured swim caps can be purchased for $10 at our school office. 4.
