3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? East St. Louis Senior High School is the only high school in the city of East St. Louis, IL and serves 1398 students this year. Ninety-nine percent of the students come from low-income families and rely heavily on the services East St. Louis School District 189 provides for their success. Achieving that success does not come without hurdles for our students to overcome. The city of East St. Louis has a population of approximately 27,000 and has a high crime rate and limited resources. In the last three years, our school has experienced a multitude of changes that have impacted the consistency desired for student success. Our recent challenges have come from year-to-year changes in school administration, programming, educational initiatives, governmentgranted support, consulting, and lead partners. This year, our 9th graders merged with the 10th, 11th and 12th graders. In the past 3 years, the ninth graders attended the 9th grade academy at a separate location. In school-year, ESLSH named its third head principal in the last four years. Along with the head principal, there are two new assistant principals. The student population is 99% African-American, with a teaching population of 77% African-American teachers and 26% white. Amongst those teachers, 77% are female and 26% are male. The educators who choose to serve our students are highly qualified, with 61% having earned a Master's Degree and the remaining 38% hold Bachelor's Degrees. At East St. Louis Senior High School, creating a safe and relevant learning environment that pushes students to reach their full potential is not an easy task. Intentional planning and programming is still key to our students' success. The creation of Parent University, Parent Job Fairs, District Food Pantry, and other family engagement activities have been critical to providing support to not only our students, but to their families as well. Here in East St. Louis, it truly does take a village to raise and nurture a child. Page 2

Vision Statement: East St. Louis Senior High School will create a culture of high expectations and maximized learning experiences as students are challenged by teachers and peers to work collaboratively for overall success. Students will be fully prepared with college and career readiness skills as they advance to compete in a global society fully prepared for their future. Mission Statement: East St. Louis Senior High School is committed to providing the highest quality college preparatory education with a focus on college, careers, service, citizenship and a true understanding of the value of education. Students can and will learn through the use of continuous improvement strategies connecting learning to real world interests and life skills. Students will learn the value of education, improve their study time and show substantial academic progress. East St. Louis School District's Learners Creed I believe in myself and in my ability to do my best at all times. Today, I will listen, think before I speak, be respectful, responsible, and ready to learn. I will do all of these things with one purpose in mind, to do my best, and not to waste this day, for this day will come no more. I am a proud student at East St. Louis Senior High School. Our learners creed is read each morning by our students. It sets the tone for the expectations of the day. Our students have a choice to make and we encourage them at the start of every day, to plan to make good choices that will enhance their academic progress. Programs offerings like BAG (Behavior, Attendance, Grades), AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), Gear Up, and the Cohort Model are a few examples of how our school provides intentional focus and attention on preparing students to be successful in high school and as they prepare for a success in college. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. Great efforts have been made each year to prepare our students with the 21st century skills needed for success in high school and beyond. In , 9th grade students met the expected outcomes in Math NWEA tests. In , 9th and 10th grade students exceeded expected outcomes in both Math and Reading. There have been gradual increases on PARCC assessment testing. In , the sophomore class of 2018 made gains of an average of 1.4 RIT points from Fall of to Fall of Over the next three years, specific plans are in place to increase overall ACT scores, graduation rates, Freshman on Track rates, 4-year Cohort rates, college acceptance rates, and the number of overall scholarship money received by students. Interventions in place to assist in achieving our goals over the next three years include the use of ALEKS, Study Island, SLO goal setting, PSAT testing, SAT testing, use of Naviance college access software, and continued use of GEAR UP and AVID programs to prepare students for college even earlier. Additionally, our Running Start program is providing juniors an opportunity to be on a local college's campus and earn both their high school diplomas and associate's degrees simultaneously, further increasing our college access. East St. Louis Senior High School works closely with our community and provides resources to parents as well as students. Parent Nights, Parent Job Fairs, and Flyers Feeding Flyers food pantry programs are a few examples of services to assist our students' families in becoming productive in our community. We want to provide access to students and assistance to families to increase the success of those living in our city. Page 5
