Comfort Digisystem Digital hearing products for all areas of working life

The workplace contains many sound environments that are challenging for people who use hearing aids or hearing implants. Comfort Digisystem helps them hear better in really challenging sound environments as well. Hearing loss no longer has to be an obstacle to leading an active life at work. 2

Where a hearing aid reaches its limits, digital hearing products take over Being able to hear well at work is important both in order to do a good job and enjoying social interaction to the full. But for someone with a hearing aid or implant, the sound environment at work represents a significant obstacle, where long distances from the sound source and disturbing background noise make it difficult to hear what customers and colleagues are saying. HEARING AID Digital sound processing that reduces background noise Comfort Digisystem TM is a range of wireless digital hearing products that enhance speech and reduce disturbing background noise before it reaches the hearing aid or hearing implant (cochlear implant or bone-anchored hearing aid). NOISE COMFORT DIGISYSTEM SPEECH The sound is digitally processed, making it easier to hear, understand and feel comfortable interacting in all areas of working life. Comfort Digisystem reduces disturbing background noise and enhances speech before it reaches the hearing aid or hearing implant. 3

SNR is the key to high speech quality. And digital radio technology delivers optimum SNR. In any given hearing situation, our speech perception is affected by the relationship between the signal (speech) and the background noise (general noise, echo and other disturbing background noise). The signal/ background noise ratio or SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) is measured in decibels. Comfort Digisystem improves SNR by 23 db An independent study 4 carried out by Lund University in Sweden has confirmed the unique capability of this digital technology to improve speech quality in environments where there is a lot of background noise. Hearing loss requires a higher SNR The stronger the signal in relation to the background noise, the higher the speech quality. The signal-tonoise ratio affects anyone s ability to perceive speech and hold a conversation, but someone with hearing loss requires an SNR up to 15 db better than that needed by a person with normal hearing in a similar situation. 1 An effective way of improving SNR There are a number of ways in which SNR can be improved. So, for instance, binaural hearing aid adaptations improve SNR by around 3 db. 2 By reducing the distance from the sound source from four metres to one, there is an improvement in SNR of around 12 db. 3 But the easiest way to significantly improve SNR is to use digital hearing products to supplement hearing aids and hearing implants. Improvement of signal-to-noise ratio in db Original signal-to-noise ratio in db (ICRA-noise) when SNR is -10 db (i.e. speech is 10 db weaker than the background noise), Comfort Digisystem improves SNR by 23 db when SNR is 0 (i.e. the speech and background noise levels are equal), Comfort Digisystem improves SNR by 17 db. By way of comparison, a hearing aid with adaptive background noise reduction and directional microphones can improve SNR by 3 to 6 db. 5 1 Killion, M. (1997). 5 Comfort Audio s hearing products are based on unique digital technology which creates new possibilities for participating in environments with considerable background noise and long hearing distances. 5

Comfort Digisystem is a complete system that utilises the full potential of digital technology. The flexible products give the best possible sound reproduction in every situation. Comfort Audio s patented technology for digital sound transmission is called SecureStream Technology TM (SST). The technology has been specially developed for hearing products and helps improve quality of life for those with hearing loss. SecureStream Technology has many advantages Digital radio technology has many advantages over FM technology: no radio noise large dynamic range (over 60 db) stable signal transmission eavesdrop-secure signal transmission linear sound reproduction up to 90 db SPL audio bandwidth optimised for speech quality An additional advantage is that SST completely eliminates the need for external antennas on the transmitter and receiver. Perfectly adequate range and stability can be achieved just by using small integrated antennas. Unlike other digital radio systems, SST involves no time delay. Powerful digital sound processing The conference microphones in Comfort Digisystem are provided with Perceptual Speech Enhancement (PSE). PSE consists of several functions that interact to bring meaningful parts of speech to the fore, at the same time as suppressing disturbing noise in the form of general noise, pulsing sound and echo. For all levels of hearing loss Comfort Digisystem can be used for slight or moderate as well as severe hearing loss. The microphones are equipped with Automatic Gain Control (AGC), which maintains a comfortable sound level and reduces transient sound. Advanced channel management which is flexible as well One function that contributes to Comfort Digisystem s scalability and flexibility is Free Channel Request (FCR). FCR ensures that in a push-to-talk system only one microphone transmits at a time, irrespective of how many microphones the system contains. The microphones are also equipped with Free Frequency Check (FFC), a function that indicates accessible channels and uses the microphone display to show which frequencies are suitable. Compatibility Comfort Digisystem receivers can be used with: hearing aids cochlear implants bone-anchored hearing aids headphones earphones teleloops Without Comfort Digisystem With Comfort Digisystem Comfort Digisystem effectively improves the signal-to-noise ratio using digital sound processing and interference-free signal transmission. 8 Phone calls without background noise and interference Many people with a hearing aid or hearing implant are apprehensive about using the phone. Echo, feedback and background noise, plus the fact that there is no opportunity to lip read, mean that many of them avoid the phone completely. But telephone calls are a natural and often necessary feature of the working day. Digital technology eliminates the interference With Comfort Digisystem most people can use the phone again. The hearing products bring a degree of clarity to the sound experienced, firstly by processing the sound from the telephone in a way that enhances speech, and secondly by reducing disturbing background noise both in the phone call itself and in the immediate vicinity. AGC and transient control help further improve sound reproduction. For all types of telephone call Comfort Digisystem can be used with many types of phone, including: mobiles wireless telephones landline telephones The hearing products can also be connected directly to a computer and used in connection with chat and meeting services, such as Skype. One product, many uses Many Comfort Digisystem products can be used during ordinary conversations and larger meetings, for instance, as well as for phone calls. This flexibility means that, to meet the individual s needs throughout the entire working day, often all that is needed is one receiver and one or two microphones. The sound from the mobile is sent to the Comfort Digisystem microphone via Bluetooth and then to the receiver worn by the person with the hearing loss. The outgoing voice communication is captured by the microphone and sent via Bluetooth to the mobile. A landline telephone is connected to the conference microphone using the TeleLink accessory. The incoming sound is processed digitally in the conference microphone before being sent to the receiver. 8

Microphone DM90 can be connected directly to the telephone s headset jack or via Bluetooth to mobiles and portable telephones. It transmits the incoming sound wirelessly to the Comfort Digisystem receiver and the signal is eavesdropsecure. 2 In environments with a lot of distracting background noise, the microphone s directional mode is used to ensure the best possible sound reproduction at the other end of the line as well. 3 For teleconferences, the conference microphone is positioned next to the loudspeaker. AGC regulates the volume automatically, ensuring the spoken message is conveyed at a comfortable level. 9

Bring clarity to dialogue involving colleagues and customers General buzz, telephone signals, scraping chairs, noise from machinery and traffic, or hum from the ventilation system. Many workplaces have background noise. When combined with long distances from the sound source, the background noise makes it difficult for a person with a hearing aid or hearing implant to hear what their colleagues are saying. A microphone and receiver are all that is needed Comfort Digisystem offers many options for optimising sound reproduction in conversations with colleagues and customers. For that little conversation, for instance, there is Microphone DM05, which is simply clipped onto a person s clothing. The microphone captures speech from the person wearing it, converts the sound into a digital signal, and then sends it, completely free of transmission noise, to the Comfort Digisystem receiver worn by the person with the hearing loss. As the microphone is positioned near to the sound source, both background noise and distracting hum are reduced. Conference microphone with digital sound processing Another alternative is to use a conference microphone. This can be placed on the table, on the reception desk or next to the cash register, for instance. The microphone automatically compensates for the distance between it and the sound source, limits transient sound and digitally processes the sound. The result: a comfortable sound environment in the workplace, including where sound levels are high. The conversation partner wears a microphone which picks up speech. The latter is transmitted digitally to the receiver worn by the person with the hearing loss. 10

Comfort Digisystem transmits the sound without any delay. It is crucial for those who lip read that the sound should be in sync with what they perceive visually. 2 The conference microphone effectively reduces overall buzz and background noise, including in very challenging sound environments. 3 Microphone DM05 is an omnidirectional close-range microphone which restricts the sound capture range. 11

For total interaction in meetings, conferences and training sessions Any large meeting is a complex environment in terms of sound. Those talking are generally distributed around the room, and the distances from the sound source are significant, making it difficult for a person with a hearing aid or implant to clearly and distinctly hear what is being said. Analogue FM systems often have problems delivering fully satisfactory sound reproduction in meeting situations, as the limitations of the analogue radio technology can lead to problems with noise, signal loss and short signal range. But with Comfort Digisystem, those with hearing loss can participate fully in meetings, teleconferences and training sessions. Conference microphone with powerful functions Comfort Digisystem s solution for meetings is based on the versatile conference microphone, which is positioned on the table, from where it can effectively pick up what the meeting participants are saying. The sound is processed digitally so that the meaningful parts of speech are amplified and background noise is filtered out. In larger meetings and presentations the conference microphone can be supplemented with one or more discreet lecturer microphones. Four sound reception modes The conference microphone has two omnidirectional modes, a zoom mode and a music mode, and it automatically compensates for differences in both distance and strength of voice. The conference microphone on the table picks up what colleagues around it are saying and automatically compensates for the distance to the sound sources in question. The sound is processed digitally before being transmitted noise-free and without any delay to the receiver worn by the person with hearing loss. Since both the volume and sound reception mode can be adjusted by remote control, the conference microphone can be positioned wherever the sound reception is at its optimum. 12

In the conference microphone the sound from the lecturer s microphone is mixed with the sound picked up by the conference microphone, before being transmitted to the receiver. 2 Not having to make an effort to hear means that energy can be freed up and used for participation and social interaction. 3 The lecturer wears a discreet microphone which picks up speech and digitises it before it is sent to the receiver completely free of noise and with no drop outs. 13
