4 A BRIEF CHRONOLOGIC REVIEW In July 1980, the first Vietnamese astronaut Pham Tuan has taken part in a cosmic flight and carried out scientific experiments in outer space. Cosmonaut Pham Tuan

5 A BRIEF CHRONOLOGIC REVIEW In 1996, the GlobeSAR Program has been launched by Canadian Centre for Remote Sensing. Vietnam was involved in this operation.. In June 2002, Prime Minister asked VAST in collaboration with MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology) and relevant ministries to prepare a National Strategy for Research and Applications of Space Technology. 14 June 2006, The Vietnamese Government has approved the Master Plan for Space Technology Development of Vietnam up to 2020:

13 SPACE TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE (STI) MAIN FUNCTIONS Research and develop space science and technology. Apply space technology in reality, providing the added services in space technology. Build infrastructure for space technology research and application Consult state-owned agencies on space technology application and development policy. Education post-graduated staff, participate in training at universities and propagate technology knowledge International Cooperation on space science and technology.

14 NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT MONITORING SYSTEM PROJECT MONRE (Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment) is carried out this project. The technical system of the project consists of: Viet Nam ground station (VNGS) National Data Center (NDC) Data Utilization Systems (DUS) The VNGS uses multi-sensor receiving technology of EADS (European Aeronautic Defense and Space company). The VNGS is located at Tu Liem district (Hanoi) and will be operating from 2007 under the management of Remote Sensing Centre (RSC)

15 Vietnam ground station (VNGS) in Hanoi NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT MONITORING SYSTEM PROJECT Project of Earth Observation has been deployed in Vietnam with the French ODA. This Station will receive SPOT Data & ASAR & MERIS data of ENVISAT to cover both Vietnamese & regional needs in remote sensing data Environment & Natural Resources Monitoring System

17 VINASAT PROJECT The project was initiated in 1995 and was approved by the VN Government at the end of The Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications (VNPT) Group is responsible for this project. VinaSat-1, the first satellite to be bought by Vietnam, is being manufactured by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems Telesat, a leading Canadian satellite operator, has signed a contract to provide engineering consulting services to the VNPT in support of VinaSat-1. VINASAT - 1 is scheduled to be launched into orbit on 28/3/2008 VINASAT-2 will be launched in 2011

18 EO SMALL SATELLITE PROJECT Following the approved Strategy, there are two periods for development of small satellite technology in Viet Nam: In : technology transfers from developed countries. In : develop itself small satellite technology. EO Small satellite project is expected to be funded by ODA during VN is interested in taking part in a constellation of small satellites (optical and/or radar). VAST is responsible for this project.

19 VNREDSAT-1 PROJECT Technical requirements of Vietnam natural resources, environment and disaster monitoring small satellite (VNREDSat-1) Optical payload. High resolution: m in panchromatic and 10 m in multispectral (4 bands). Mission Life: 5 years. Launch mass: about 150 kg. Revisit time: 3 days. Moreover, VAST encourages some partners to offer an ODA loan for implementationvnredsat-1 project. VNREDSat-1 will be launched in 2011

20 VNREDSAT-1 PROJECT Proposal: Korea Aerospace Industry (KAI) EADS-ASTRIUM NEC & Sumitomo Thales Alenia ATSB - Astronautic Technology (M) Sdn Bhd Surrey Satellite Technology Limited - SSTL The satellite of VNREDSat-1 project will combine with the ground receiving station in the MONRE project

21 STATE R&D PROGRAM ON SPACE TECHNOLOGY In 2008, setup State R&D program on space technology. Include: - Small satellite & facilities development - Application in remote sensing - Human resource - International joint research projects. MOST is responsible for this program VAST will be a coordinator of program
