3 The Catholic Family Record Guide is an intregal part of the ministry of the Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Omaha to educate families and promote discussion between family members regarding final burial (interment) intentions. After recording your wishes in this booklet, determine who you want to be in charge of your final arrangements and let that individual know where this book is located. By making your wishes known in advance, you will ease your family s burden and can take comfort in knowing your wishes will have been met. The Rite Thing to Do For those who have been baptized as Catholics, the Catholic Church expects them to take full advantage of the Order of Christian Funerals. These rites include: prayers at the time of death and thereafter, a vigil (wake) service allowing time for prayers and support, a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated for both the living and the dead, and committal (burial) in a cemetery as the final resting place or those who have fallen asleep in Christ. Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Omaha welcomes non-catholic family members to be laid to rest with their Catholic family. + Vigil for the Deceased (Wake) The Vigil for the Deceased is a prayer service with readings selected from Scripture to fit the circumstances of the deceased, a homily that comforts and gives hope, intercessions that speak to the faith of those gathered, and prayers in preparation for the Funeral Liturgy. The Vigil may also include recitation of the Most Holy Rosary. + Funeral Liturgy (Mass of Christian Burial or Funeral Service Outside of Mass) Celebrating the Funeral Liturgy at Mass in the parish church is the customary way most Catholics experience the Order of Christian Funerals. The Eucharistic celebration looks forward to your participation in the heavenly banquet, where we are united with Jesus, the saints, and all those who share eternal life. + Rite of Committal (Burial) at the Cemetery The Rite of Committal is the final liturgy in the Order of Christian Funerals. Like the Vigil Service, the Rite of Committal makes use of Scripture, intercessions and prayers. To have a priest or deacon present at this final moment is a great source of consolation to those who will now have to continue their journey in life without their beloved.

4 Yes, today you can. Prior to 1963, the Catholic Church did not allow cremation of the body since its origin was a denial of the resurrection of the body. The 1983 Code of Canon Law in Canon 1176 states, The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed; it does not, however, forbid cremation unless it has been chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teaching. In 1996, the United States Bishops voted to allow cremated remains, referred to as cremains, to be present in the Church for the Funeral Mass. This was approved by Pope John Paul II. Cremains should be treated with the same respect given to the corporeal remains of the human body. Scattering or keeping the cremains at home is not a reverent disposition of the body and is forbidden by Church Law. Choosing a proper vessel in which the cremains are carried and placing the cremains in their burial (interment) space shows reverence and respect. Catholic Cemeteries provides in-ground burial space or entombment options in a mausoleum or columbarium for cremains as a dignified sign of hope in the resurrection and a reminder of the life we are to share in Christ, who will transform our bodies to be like His in glory. A Catholic cemetery is a sacred place of consecrated grounds and buildings (like a parish worship space) that strives to create and maintain an environment conducive to prayer, reflection and remembrance. Therefore, by choosing a Catholic cemetery, one selects a final resting place that reflects the Catholic beliefs and values from life s personal journey while awaiting resurrection and the promise of everlasting life. The Catholic Cemeteries Difference Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Omaha is a non-profit organization serving Catholic families, the clergy and religious orders with the corporal work of mercy of respectfully interring the deceased and providing their perpetual care. Our five Cemeteries are designed and maintained to encourage prayerful visitation through the use of statuary, landscaping, architecture, and Christian memorials. Memorial Masses are regularly offered for the repose of the souls of loved ones interred in the Cemeteries. All products and services can be pre-planned. Personal wishes and difficult decisions can be made today, minimizing the emotional stress your mourning family may have at the time of need. Prepaid prices of certain memorials (i.e., markers, monuments, bronze plaques, etc) are guaranteed for up to 5 years and ALL other prepaid arrangements are guaranteed for life so your family will avoid incurring future inflation. Our Ministry here at the Catholic Cemeteries is to assist you and your family in any way we can. Please call if you have any questions or concerns at (402) or stop by our central office in Calvary Cemetery. We are privileged to provide general information, maps, and preplanning services suited to your unique family needs. Feel free to drive through the five Catholic Cemeteries and go into the mausoleums, which are open 7 days a week, all year long. May our perpetual care provide you and your family peace as we await the Resurrection.

5 2 Peace of Mind The death of a loved one is always difficult, and each family has its own unique circumstances. Why Should I Preplan Now? 1. The emotional and financial stress at the time of death can be overwhelming. 2. You, your spouse, and your family have the ability to discuss and make decisions together now when you can think clearly and without pressure regarding your final wishes. 3. Preplanning your arrangements allows you to take advantage of financing options over a five year period. At the time of death, financing is not an option and all arrangements for the deceased must be paid immediately. 4. Preplanning allows you to lock in today s prices. Prepaid prices of certain memorials (i.e., markers, monuments, bronze plaques, etc.) are guaranteed for up to 5 years and ALL other prepaid arrangements are guaranteed for life so your family will avoid incurring future inflation. 5. Most importantly, you will have the peace of mind in knowing that you have provided a final gift of kindness for your family in pre-planning your arrangements by easing the financial and emotional burden at the time of your death. Where Do I Start? Step 1: CATHOLIC FAMILY RECORD GUIDE Catholic Cemeteries offers this complimentary Catholic Family Record Guide to assist you in planning your Wake/Visitation, Funeral Mass and Rite of Committal. The guide may be found on our website or, if you prefer, call one of our Family Service Representatives at our central office in Calvary Cemetery at (402) for a copy. Step 2: OBTAIN A FINAL RESTING PLACE Common Questions to Consider + Do I want to be in a particular cemetery? + Are there any family members or friends I wish to be near? + Do I want a traditional casket or cremation burial in the ground, or do I want to be in a crypt or niche above ground? + Do my spouse and I agree on the same type of interment, or do we each want a different type where we can still be together? + If I desire to be buried, do I want an upright monument or a flat marker? + Do I want additional spaces for family members?
