Funeral Prepared for Date and Time / Funeral Mass Arrangements Saints Gabriel and Bridget Catholic Churches 1
Dear Parishioner, In St. Paul s first letter to the Corinthians, we read of his gratitude for the victory of Christ over death. In fact, such a sentiment is shared by all those who follow Christ. And as His faithful followers, each of us was baptized into His life, death and resurrection. In short, death is not the end but an eternal beginning Thanks be to God! But in times of death and loss, it can be very difficult for us to feel gratitude. Often times we are left feeling a whole spectrum of emotions that make the coming months very difficult. And the funeral rites and traditions of our Catholic Faith are here to help bring order and structure to a time that is very often overwhelming While the time preceding the funeral Mass is always most difficult and exhausting for immediate family and close friends, it is my sincere hope that this funeral planning guide helps make this time easier. Be assured of our entire parish s prayers for you during this time. Through the intercession of St. Gabriel the Archangel, may the peace of our Lord s victory reign in your hearts evermore. Sincerely, Fr. Dustin Boehm 2
Basic Information Name of the Deceased Date of Death Date of Funeral Time Please make sure that you have spoken to the parish office before finalizing this date and time. We try to accommodate the desired date and time but on occasion another service, activities, or even Church Holidays might make it impossible to accommodate the date or time. Main Contact for Planning Best contact Phone Number Please Circle one: Full body Burial or Cremation* Funeral Home Cemetery Will there be any other priests in attendance at this funeral and if so do you prefer they celebrate the Funeral mass or perform the graveside service? Will there be any special groups involved in these ceremonies such as the Knights of Columbus or Military Honor Guard? 3
*Cremation The Catholic Church does allow for cremation of the body. This can take place before or after the funeral. If it takes place after the funeral the graveside service will take place at a different time. It is expected that the cremated remains still be buried in one location and not scattered. Eulogies At the mass a Eulogy is not part of our Catholic Tradition. The Mass is a sacred rite meant to pray for the deceased and their family, but above all to praise and beseech God to grant the deceased eternal peace in heaven. A Eulogy is a talk given in praise of the deceased. It is therefore not appropriate to give at the funeral mass. Eulogies, poems, songs, etc. may be given at other times. The most appropriate are at the prayer service or viewing, just after the grave side service, or at the funeral meal. Viewing/Calling The viewing or calling will take place in what location? Please Circle one Church or Funeral Home At the viewing you have the option of having a short prayer service (vigil) or a simple rosary said. Neither of these are required. If there is to be a Eulogy then this would take place after the rosary or during the vigil prayer service. Please Circle which option you would prefer to have. Vigil Prayer service Rosary Neither If you would like to have a prayer service or a Rosary do you desire to the priest to perform these services? Yes No 4
If you have a prayer service will there be anyone who will deliver a Eulogy for the deceased? Yes No If so, who? Relationship Remembrances should be written out and practiced. They should be no longer than five minutes in length. The Funeral liturgy It is the norm that a funeral be celebrated during a mass. However this is not an absolute. If the deceased is a non-catholic they would not have a mass or there might be some other reason to not celebrate the funeral during a mass. Please Circle one: Funeral during mass or Funeral outside of Mass Pallbearers carry the casket. Normally there are six able bodied individuals who perform this responsibility. The Church can provide servers or they can be relatives or friends of the deceased. It normally works best if they are servers at St. Gabriel/St. Bridget, or at least servers at their home parish. Please make sure they arrive at the Church one hour prior to Mass beginning 5
The funeral mass begins with the priest meeting the family and the body of the deceased in the back of church. At this time a Pall is placed on the casket. This is normally carried out by two to four people. Will there be a Christian symbol placed on the casket? If so what will it be? (cross, crucifix, rosary, prayer book) Liturgy of the word Normally there are two readings at mass, but this is not required. Each reading needs a person to read the scripture. There can be multiple people or person. Please see the list for appropriate readings. 1 st Reading Reader Psalm Sung by Choir or Cantor 2 nd Reading Reader Gospel Read by the priest Prayers of the faithful (Provided by Church) Reader Is there a deceased person you would like specifically prayed for, and/or would you like to pray for a specific thing, cause, etc. during the prayers of the faithful? 6
Liturgy of the Eucharist Gifts bearers (people to bring up the bread and wine) Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (people who are trained ministers to help distribute Communion) The church can provide these ministers if needed. The policy of St. Gabriel and St. Bridget is that the Precious Blood will not be distributed during Communion time. We will only need enough ministers to help distribute the Consecrated Hosts. Please list the names of those you wish to help distribute Communion if needed: It is our Catholic belief that the Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior. It is also a public sign of our individual union with the Roman Catholic Church. For both reasons, the reception of the Eucharist is reserved to Catholics in good standing. Everyone else is still invited forward for a blessing during Communion time. Approximate number of people to receive Communion: 7
Music At a Catholic Funeral only sacred music that is based on scripture is allowed to be sung. Secular music may be played at the vigil/calling or at another suitable time, but it does not have a place within the context of the Mass. Traditionally there are four songs that are sung at mass. Opening: Offertory: Communion: Closing: Please select songs from the attached list. Music is a vital part of the mass. Normally the church provides the cantors and musicians for the funeral mass. But others may be able to serve in this ministry as long as they are familiar with our Catholic tradition and the celebration of Mass. Name of guest singer Graveside service The graveside service is a brief service that takes place at the place of burial. It can take place immediately following the funeral or at a later time or date. Will this take place immediately following the funeral? Yes or No If not when will the burial take place? Will there be a Eulogy after the graveside service? Yes or No If so, who? Relationship 8
Funeral Meal The parish often provides a funeral meal after the funeral mass and burial. The meal will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Connersville, unless otherwise specified. Would you like this option for your family and friends? Approximate number of guests eating? Any special requests for this meal? Yes or No Our Bereavement Ministry and meal team will do its best to try and accommodate your request. Any other special requests? 9
