Developed by the Iowa State Association of County Auditors In Cooperation with the Iowa Secretary of State Iowa s primary election is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June of even-numbered years. How is it decided which political parties are involved in the primary election? Each voter must declare a political party prior to voting. The voter then receives a ballot that lists the candidates of that party for each office. Primary Under Iowa law, a political party is an organization whose candidate for president of the United States or governor of Iowa received at least two percent of the votes cast for that office in the last general election. Ballots in the first precinct in which an office is listed on the ballot will show candidates names in alphabetical order, or reverse alphabetical order, by last name.
