4 Sshh... no-one will know The term lingual refers to the attachment of braces on the inner surface of the tooth, inside the mouth where they cannot be seen. They are totally inconspicuous. Your teeth can be straightened without worrying about your appearance. Lingual braces are customised to your mouth which helps make them efficient, effective and less intrusive. Whilst revelling in the secret transformation of your smile, you will notice how your teeth are changing when you look in the mirror. There are several highly effective lingual brace options; we will recommend the right system for you from a choice of Incognito, Orapix and Stb lingual systems. Advanced CAD CAM technology is used in the manufacture of all lingual braces so they can be customised precisely to fit your teeth. This reduces the discomfort sometimes associated with starting treatment, and ensures treatment efficiency. 6 Questions you might like to ask Can anyone have lingual orthodontic treatment? Age does not limit the use of a lingual brace. However, adult teeth need to have erupted before we can start treatment for children. If teeth are very small it is more difficult to place the brace. If your teeth and gums are not healthy, braces are not suitable. How long is the treatment? Treatment time will vary depending on the complexity of the problem. Each treatment is based on a comprehensive and highly personalised plan and can take anywhere between 6 and 24 months to complete. Could you give me a six month smile then? A course of treatment in six months is only appropriate for mild problems. The Six Month Smile is a marketing concept designed to attract patients who only want their front teeth moved. But this is not always in the best interests of the patient. Selective tooth movement may cause other problems in the future. So, six months is not something we can guarantee. What we can guarantee is that we will provide you with the best treatment in the optimum time-frame. Will treatment affect my speech? Most people do notice a temporary change in their speech. This generally improves after an initial period of adaptation. The new brackets we use minimise this problem. Will I be able to clean my teeth? Yes in fact, you will need to spend more time keeping your teeth clean than usual. It is essential to maintain a good standard of oral hygiene. We believe this is so important that for patients who do not have a hygienist in their practice or who want the convenience of coming here, we have two hygienists available. Sarah and Katharine are skilled at treating patients with the latest orthodontic appliances and will be happy to see you. What can I eat whilst wearing braces? You will find that some foods are more difficult to eat and we recommend that you avoid them. Popcorn, nuts, chewing gums and crusty bread are examples of food that might damage your braces. In the early days of treatment, you may find that you don t want to eat anything too crunchy. Lettuce, spinach and anything stringy can get caught in the braces, although some people don t have a problem. If you opt for Invisalign braces, you have to take out your aligners to eat so you don t need to worry about diet. Will my teeth remain in their new position after treatment? No orthodontist can guarantee the stability of orthodontic treatment without a retainer. At the end of your treatment, we will give you easy-to-wear retainers which you will need to use on an ongoing basis to protect the investment you ve made in your teeth. 9 Our orthodontic specialists Dr Asif Chatoo BSc, BDS, FDS RCS (Eng), MSc., MOrth RCS (Eng) Asif qualified as a Dentist from King s College, London and gained his Masters Degree in Orthodontics from GKT Dental Institute, London. He has received specialist training in Lingual Orthodontics and has a keen interest in the multidisciplinary treatment of adult patients. Asif is the only UK-trained orthodontists to be accredited by both the European Society of Lingual Orthodontics and the World Society of Lingual Orthodontics. Asif is a Lecturer in Lingual Orthodontics at Warwick University and lectures around the world. You can also arrange appointments with Asif at our clinic in the City of London.
