Your Guide to Corrective Lenses Some Common Terms Single Vision is simply a lens that has only one focus on it. The lenses may be used for distance viewing, such as driving, movies, or all around wear, or they may be used for near viewing, such as reading, computer or art work. Bifocal is a lens that has two foci on it. The top portion has the distance focus an the lower portion has the near focus. Today there are many types of bifocals, from flat top, a half-moon segment usually mm in diameter, to an executive which has a line all the way across. This enables one to have one pair of glasses for both distance and reading. Progressives are multifocal lenses designed to mimic your natural vision. They give you a clear distance focus, multiple intermediate focuses, and a sharp reading area. These are especially beneficial for those who wear glasses all the time. There is no visible line, therefore they are more esthetically pleasing. Progressive lenses are the most technologically advanced lenses available today allowing for a more natural way of seeing. Other Options - There are many other lenses with diverse configurations, such as trifocals, double bifocals, occupational bifocals, etc.. that can be used for specific needs and specific tasks. Which one is right for me? The best way to determine which lens is right for you is to answer some simple questions from your eye care practitioner.
Do I wear my glasses all day long? What is my occupation? How do I use my eyes during the day? How many hours a day do I spend on a computer? What type of lens am I used to? What are my expectations for my new glasses? Lens Material Plastic lenses are made from a CR-39 RESIN. They are lightweight and scratch easier than glass, although many are scratch coated today. Currently they are the most common lens material dispensed. Glass lenses are made from fusing sand with dioxides of potassium or sodium. Although glass lenses were once the only lens option, today they are being dispensed less and less. Their weight and breakage ability make them both uncomfortable and a safety hazard. Polycarbonate lenses are an injection molded thermoplastic material. They are the safest and lightest lens material. All polycarbonate lenses absorb U.V. radiation and are scratch resistant coated. It is especially important for all children s eyewear and those engaged in vigorous work, hobbies and sports activity. High Index Plastic is a revolutionary new plastic material that dramatically reduces lens thickness and weight but retains all the optical qualities of a plastic lens. It also eliminates the coke
bottle effect of lenses with a strong prescription. These are especially helpful for those with a hard to fit prescription and will enhance frame style options, comfort and function. Tints Tints can change the appearance and also affect the optical properties of your lenses, as in the case of prescription sunglasses. Some tints permeate throughout the lens material, some are absorbed into the lens surface, and some are applied as a coating to the lens surface and some, in the case of polarized lenses, are laminate to the lens surface. The tint that is right for you will depend on the nature of your vision needs and the material that your lenses are made from. Sun Tints - Sunglass lenses serve two functions; they protect your eyes from harmful U.V. radiation and they filter excessive sunlight and reduce glare. All sunglass lenses should absorb 100% of U.V. The lenses must be optical quality, even if not prescription. Most people only think of sunglasses in summer, but the glare from snow and dirty windshields make sunglasses even more necessary for winter driving. Fashion Tints- Prescription lenses made of optical plastic can be tinted in a variety of colors or shades. Tinted lenses create a special fashion for both men and women by matching, complementing, and accenting eye colors, clothing, and eyeglass frames. Tints can also reduce glare. Computer Tints - Although computer use does not cause eye damage, more than half of all operators experience eyestrain, headaches, and blurred vision. We recommend a computer tint, consisting of anti-reflection coating, U.V. filter, and a colored tint,
for all users. The tint greatly reduces glare and adds more contrast, increasing comfort for computer use. Transitions - This type of plastic lens darkens when exposed to sunlight and lightens when the exposure is removed. Currently, through many technological advances, these lenses darken to the depth of a sunglass and lighten to clear. The convenience of these lenses cannot be matched, but remember, transition lenses will not change behind the windshield of your car. (They are activated by U.V. rays, and most windshields have a U.V. filter) Polarized- These are the ultimate sunglass lenses, as they reduce more glare than any other lenses. Where most sunglasses reduce glare from above, polarized lenses drastically reduce glare created from long flat surfaces, such as water, skiing surfaces or the hood of your car. Therefore, polarized lenses are highly recommended for any water activity, fishing, sailing or pleasure boating, and winter sports as well, such as skiing, snowboarding and cross country. These lenses are available in a variety of colors. CPF - Corning glare control lenses are the premier medical lenses, providing comfort, relief and sharp vision to light sensitive patients with certain eye conditions such as cataracts, laser surgery, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Special Lens Coatings Scratch Resistant Coating - This coating is available on plastic lenses and offers a one year warranty against scratching, under normal usage. Anti-Reflective Coating - The major advantage of the antireflection coating is that the lens seems to disappear. Annoying reflections on the back surface of the lenses that some people observe are greatly reduced. Wearers notice an improvement in
vision as well as appearance. The improvement is also noticeable during night driving, as ghost images are almost totally eliminated. Anti-reflective coatings are recommended for all eyewear to maximize their effectiveness. U.V. Coating - U.V. radiation is a major cause of eye degenerations, especially cataracts. U.V. exposure is also related to macular degeneration, solar retinitis, and corneal dystrophies. The sources of U.V. exposure are sunlight, welder s flash, computer terminals, fluorescent lighting, high intensity mercury vapor lamps, xenon lamps, and other lighting. We recommend that all people who wear glasses outside or in areas where there is significant U.V. exposure have their plastic lenses coated to absorb U.V.
