3 Selection: Act I Scene 1 Class Discussion Date: 11/16/10 In Act 1, Scene 1 of Othello Iago explains his hatred of Othello to Roderigo, using Cassio s promotion as a dominant reason. He incites his naïve friend to awaken Brabantio in order to inform the elder statesman of his daughter s, Desdemona s elopement to the Moor. Roderigo also has cause to hate Othello because he had tried to woo Desdemona himself, but failed. Iago conveniently stays hidden while Roderigo enrages and engages Brabantio to act. Street in Venice late at night. Under the cover of darkness speaks of treachery and dark deeds. Othello is a minority in this country potential for prejudice Iago Roderigo Brabantio Jealousy Iago is jealous of Cassio getting the promotion Iago says, He [Cassio] (in good time!) must his [Othello s] lieutenant be, / And I ([God] bless the mark! his Moorship s ancient ( ). Roderigo is jealous of Othello marrying Desdemona Your fair daughter[desdemona] transported with a knave of common hire, to the gross clasps of a lascivious Moor Mere prattle, without practice (1.1.26) old black ram tupping your white ewe ( ) snorting citizens (1.1.90) Iago He really hates Othello and seems to be playing on Roderigo s jealousy as well. He is willing to stir the pot, but runs away from the spotlight. This is seen most clearly when he leaves before Brabantio comes down ( ) What images or words seem to reoccur in this selection? References to animals (black ram & white ewe, beast with two backs ) Heaven and hell Derogatory terms directed at Othello. Iago: I follow him [Othello] to serve my turn upon him (1.1.42). I am not what I am (1.1.65). Though I do hate him [Othello] as I do hell-pains, / Yet, for necessity of present life, / I must show out a flag and sign of love, / Which is indeed but sign ( ). How does this selection help me answer the essential Othello s actions have prompted Iago to seek revenge. Roderigo and Iago cause Brabantio to stir from bed and confront Othello. Their language and description help to enrage the older man.
