7 The man Claude Monet Claude Oscar Monet was born November 14 th, 1840 in Paris Up until the age of 23, all of Monet s paintings were done indoors. In 1858 he is greeted by Eugene Boudin who insists he paint out of doors. Five years later he discovers one of Manet s paintings and begins painting en plein air, a French expression which means in the open air.

8 Monet: En Plein Air In the year 1863, Monet started painting en plein air. This was a big change because all of the artists of that time period spent their time in their studios drawing still life s or models while en plein air was all about capturing natural light. This style of painting is what separated the Impressionists from other artists of their time.

9 Success and Tragedy Two years after starting to paint en plein air, Monet submits his paintings for the first time to the official Salon with great success. His paintings are embraced by other Impressionists rather quickly at this point. Despite the birth of his first son the year prior, in 1868 Claude Monet attempts suicide.

10 An Artist Without his Eyes Monet continues on with his art regularly until the year 1907 when his first eyesight problems occur. By the time Monet is 83 he is nearly blind and has a surgery done on his eyes. The surgery only slightly improves his sight.

11 Monet s Death On December 5 th in the year 1926, Monet dies at the age of 86 of lung cancer. His ceremony is held at Giverny.

12 Rough Starts At the age of 17 Monet is forced to deal with the death of his mother, Louise Monet

13 A Family of his Own In 1867, Monet has his first son with Camille Doncieux. Three years later Monet marries Camille and his family moves to the city of London to try to avoid the war. Monet s second son, Michel Monet, is born seven years later in the year 1878.

14 Death in the Family The year after Michel Monet s birth, his mother Camille dies. Monet moves his family to Poissy in After 11 years, Monet remarries, marrying a woman named Alice. Not long after their marriage, in the year 1911, Alice dies as well. Monet does not remarry. Jean Monet, Claude s oldest son, dies in 1914.

15 In the Open Air Claude Monet painted using a style called en plein air, a French expression which literally means in the open air. During the mid-19 th century, natural light became extremely important to Impressionism.

16 Broken Color Monet s painting technique was of broken color. Broken color is a technique that is supposed to achieve the sensation of light itself in a painting.

17 Monet s Paintings Claude Monet painted primarily with oil paints but also used pastels and was always known to have a sketchbook. Money used a limited range of colors, ridding his paintings of brown, earthy colors and, eventually, even black.

18 Monet s Works The following pictures are several, though not nearly all, of Claude Monet's paintings. The paintings each have both the name of the painting and the year it was done in the picture as well.
