BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science Name Class Teachers Think for yourself, act for others 1

Welcome to the BTEC Applied Science Course at Cheney School. Over Years 10 and 11 you will be working towards two qualifications called BTEC Level 2 First Award in Applied Science. This means that it is the equivalent to two Science GCSEs, at grades A*-C depending on how well you do. As well as sitting two externals exams you will build up a portfolio of marked assignments for each of the two courses. Unlike GCSE it is vocational; it should be linked to the world of work, and might lead to Applied Science rather than Biology, Chemistry and Physics A-Levels. In Year 10, you will have two teachers and, between them, you will cover Chemistry and our Earth (Unit 2), Physics and our Universe (Unit 3) and Biology and our Environment (Unit 4). You will also sit your Unit 1 - Principles of Applies Science examination in March. In Year 11, you will have two teachers and between them, you will cover Applications of Chemical Substances (Unit 5), Applications of Physical Science (Unit 6) and Health Applications of Life Science (Unit 7). You will also sit your Unit 8 Scientific Skills examination in March. For both courses a Pass unit is worth 12 points, a Merit, 18 and a Distinction, 24 points. Students must accrue a total of 45 points to obtain a Level 2 pass, 66 for a Merit, 84 for a Distinction and 90 for a Distinction *. Key Skills Learners need the chance to show current and future employers that they can: Communicate effectively, in a variety of situations, using a wide range of techniques Work well with others - individuals or teams - so that work can be properly planned and targets met Manage their own development, so that they are always ready to take on the challenges of change and diversification Use numbers, not just within routine tasks and functions but to help them be more effective and efficient in all they do Use ICT in a range of applications to support all aspects of their role Solve problems in a variety of circumstances. Independent Learning Although the majority of your lessons will be guided, during your assignments your teacher will act as a facilitator; it will be up to you to plan and carry out the task set, and to ask for assistance when needed. You will also be responsible for looking at feedback, reflecting upon and then improving your work. Assignments As shown on the year plans, you will carry out sixteen assignments over your two years. These will work as follows: Spend a series of lessons being taught and learning about the topic 2

Teacher gives you an assignment brief (a list of tasks or questions at Pass, Merit and Distinction level) and a deadline You can use your previous work, textbooks and other resources to carry out the task Your teacher will mark the assignment, and give you feedback on how you have done, and what you could do to improve your grade Later in the year, if needed, you will get time to improve your assignments You will keep track of how you are doing during the course You have to pass all assignments to get a pass overall This means that good attendance is essential There are guidelines about plagiarism (copying work) later on in the handbook There are guidelines about how to appeal if you think the marking is unfair later in the handbook Submission of BTEC Assignments All BTEC assignments will have two deadlines attached; at the Interim Deadline students will be expected to submit their work with a view to having achieved the pass, merit and distinction criteria. Teachers will then mark the work, with an expected turnaround of no more than three weeks. Once marked, teachers will be able to provide constructive feedback and improvement points. A final submission deadline is then set, with students actively encouraged to discuss their work with their teachers prior to the deadline. Once the final submission deadline has passed, reworking of assignments is no longer permitted. During resubmission, no alterations to original hand-ins are permitted. If students fail to meet deadlines they are only eligible to achieve a pass in that particular assignment. Appeals Procedure Assessment within BTEC courses is ongoing, with the candidate fully participating in the assessment process, e.g. through assessment planning and reviews of performance. If this participation is taken seriously then it must be accepted that there will be times when the candidate s and assessor s perceptions, of whether agreed evidence (agreed during assessment planning/review stages) meets the standards, are going to be different. If this occurs, the candidate should have the right to appeal via an accessible and open system. The characteristics of an appeals structure related to BTECs should include: Access to fair and reliable assessment Clear and prompt response times Stages that provide all parties with the opportunity to put their case Clear outcomes Constructive feedback Be related to the candidate s assessment needs A formal recording system 3

Evaluation of appeals Stage 1: Assessor and Candidate Where a candidate disagrees with the assessment given (s)he must explain the reasons for this with the assessor concerned, but must be within ten working days. In most circumstances this will be immediately after receiving the assessment decision. The assessor must consider the candidate s explanation and provide an immediate response through: A clear explanation/re-iteration (as appropriate) of the assessment decision following a re-evaluation of the evidence Letters from candidate to appeal Amendment of the candidate s assessment record, if appropriate If the candidate agrees with decision thus provided then the appeal need not proceed further. Where the candidate remains unhappy with the decision reached, the appeal must proceed to Stage 2. Stage 2 The assessor concerned must forward: The original assessment record and candidate evidence, where appropriate The candidate appeal letter to the nominated Internal Verifier within 24 hours of the appeal being raised. The Internal Verifier must reconsider the assessment decision and this will normally involve an evaluation of: The candidate evidence and associated records The assessor s rationale for the decision The opinion of another assessor The opinion of the candidate In doing so the Internal Verifier must complete feedback and provide the candidate with the reconsidered decision within five working days of receiving the appeal. Where the candidate remains unhappy with the reconsidered assessment decision, the appeal must proceed to Stage 3. Stage 3 Appeals Panel 4

Where candidates remain unhappy with the decision made at Stage 2 they will have the right to forward their case to the Appeals Panel. The Internal Verifier concerned at Stage 2 must forward relevant details to the Programme Area Manager. Candidate letter Assessment Record sheet(s) Any written comments of the Internal Verifier (perhaps providing background details) The Programme Area Manager must convene, within ten working days of Stage 2, a panel comprising: The Programme Area Manager him/herself The Stage 2 Internal Verifier The Candidate The Original Assessor A friend/colleague of the candidate, if wished for by that candidate The panel must reach a decision and inform the candidate of the result within five working days both orally and in writing. The decision of the Appeals Panel is final. Records of all appeals are to be logged and made available as appropriate to: The External Verifier The quality assurance group with responsibility for assessment Copying and Plagiarism Plagiarism is defined as work, which has been copied from another student, straight from an academic text or from the internet and claimed as the student s own work. This is cheating and will lead to a referral grade being awarded; plagiarism being identified on more than one occasion may result in the student failing the course. It is academically sound to quote from texts, however, these words must be in quotation marks and referenced both in the text and bibliography. Codes of Conduct These codes have been drawn up to assist staff and students in the successful completion of their BTEC Science qualification. Please read and digest. Any questions please see Mrs Robson. No eating in any class. You are allowed to take in a drink e.g. water in a plastic bottle (no glass please). Persistent misconduct in class: students will be required to leave e.g. constant talking to friends, disrupting class. All mobile phones to be switched off and out of sight in class. 5

Deadlines must be adhered to and met All work must be presented in a plastic wallet with front sheet name on etc. 6
