1 Wednesday 15 June 2016 World's Oldest Beer The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston, Tasmania has achieved scientific results of interest to beer brewers and drinkers worldwide. The museum has identified what is believed to be the world's oldest beer, surviving as contents of a bottle salvaged from the protected Historic Shipwreck Sydney Cove (1797) at Preservation Island, Tasmania. Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery Conservator Mr David Thurrowgood has initiated and coordinated research into the bottle contents by assembling a team of expert scientists from Australia, France, Germany and Belgium. The research team has isolated live yeast from the bottle contents and used it to brew beer using period recipes. The beer has a distinctly light and fresh flavour, giving a taste of beer that has not been sipped for 220 years. "The yeast is an unusual three way hybrid with links to bakers, brewers and wine yeast," said Mr Thurrowgood. "It is genetically different to hundreds of yeast species it has been compared to from Australia and around the world. Traditionally beer was brewed in open vats. This yeast is consistent with historic brewing practices." The Sydney Cove shipwreck is one of the most important in Australia, and is known for the range of preserved fragile organic materials including rice, tobacco, ink, textiles, leather, wine and spirits that are frequently lost on other wreck sites. Underwater archaeological excavations of the site were conducted by Mr Mike Nash, Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service, during with funding from the national Historic Shipwrecks Program. "Possibly the wreck has now also given us the world's only known pre-industrial revolution brewing yeast," said Mr Thurrowgood. Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery Director, Mr Richard Mulvaney, said the museum plans to continue the research into the yeasts and bacteria recovered from the bottles, if they are successful in obtaining funding.

2 "We will also study the wine and spirits from the cargo, possibly enabling recreating other historic brews," said Mr Mulvaney. "The bottles also enable study of historic red wine molecules to see if they are different to modern red wine and its reported health benefits, and to study other possible dietary micro-organisms from 220 years ago." The world leading expertise of the Australian Wine Research Institute and the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA have been essential to achieving scientific study of the yeast. "This has been a textbook example of scientists working with industry to undertake novel research with a high commercial potential," said Mr Mulvaney. "If the Sydney Cove wreck had not been professionally excavated, this research would not have been possible, so please do not attempt to remove artefacts yourself." ENDS About the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery Australia's largest regional museum, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery features two destinations for local, national and international audiences: a former 19th-century railway workshop at Inveresk, Launceston which showcases the Natural Sciences and History collections, and the Royal Park building on Wellington Street, Launceston, a dedicated Art Gallery. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is owned and operated by the City of Launceston, Tasmania. This year, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery celebrates 125 years. Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976 All historic shipwrecks are protected by the Commonwealth of Australia; under the control of the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976 and all material recovered from these wrecks remains the property of the Commonwealth. If you find anything interesting, please report it promptly so that its full scientific and cultural potential can be achieved. If the Sydney Cove wreck had not been professionally salvaged, this research would not have been possible, so please do not attempt salvage yourself Historical Context - Sydney Cove Please refer following page.

3 Historical Context - Sydney Cove Extract taken from: Sydney Cove, The History and Archaeology of an Eighteenth-Century Shipwreck by Mr Michael Nash, Maritime Archaeologist, Historic Heritage Section, Parks and Wildlife Service, Tasmanian Government. Wrecked in 1797, during a journey from Calcutta to Port Jackson, the Sydney Cove is the eighth oldest shipwreck in Australian waters and the first merchant vessel lost after the establishment of the colony of New South Wales. The Sydney Cove was a relatively small trading ship of around 250 tons carrying a cargo composed primarily of alcohol, foodstuffs, textiles and livestock. Despite its apparently humble origins, the archaeological and historical significance of the wreck is considerable. The cargo of the Sydney Cove, together with a substantial proportion of the goods that reached Australia in the earliest years of settlement, originated from India and the East rather than Great Britain. Historians have generally underestimated the relevance of the links between the subcontinent and the new Australian colonies, and the importance of the role played by British merchants resident in India. The value of this relationship is demonstrated by the collection of artefact material recovered from the site, which is one of the largest from this early colonial period. As such it has given a unique insight into the merchant ships and their cargoes that provided links with the outside world that were vital for the development of the isolated outpost of Sydney.
