1 Community Service Project for Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri, Inc. Project Name: Good Turn for Goodwill Target Date: April 25, 2015 Summary: Good Turn for Goodwill is a community-wide recycling/donation drive during which Girl Scouts collect and deliver donations of good, used clothing, household items, books, games, etc. to a designated Goodwill location. Age Groups: All age groups can participate Patch Opportunity: Community Service Educational Tags: Recycling, Environment, Earth Day Educational presentations on recycling and/or a tour of Goodwill s local recycling center can be scheduled. Execution: A week or two in advance of the target date, Girl Scouts and their volunteers distribute donation bags to friends and neighbors in the community along with a flyer requesting donations. On the designated day, neighbors will place the filled bags on their porch or by their mailbox for the Girl Scouts and their volunteers to pick up. These are then delivered to the donation center and tallied. A special patch, similar to the ones shown below, will be provided by Goodwill for each Girl Scout who participates. 1

2 Get started: Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri and Goodwill of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas join together for the Instructions 1. Troop leaders complete the registration form in this packet and mail or fax it to the address listed on the form by March 28, Goodwill will deliver collection bags and flyers to the registered troops. 3. Troops can also schedule an educational presentation on recycling and/or schedule a tour of Goodwill s recycling operation. Make it happen: Good Turn for Goodwill 1. On or around Saturday, April 18th, Girl Scouts distribute the bags and flyers in their target neighborhoods and communities that explain the donation drive and encourage each household/family to place donations on the curb the following Saturday, April 25 th, by 9:00 a.m. It is important for the troops to keep track of which houses have been notified so they can return and pick up any items that are left out for this drive. 2. On Saturday, April 25th, Girl Scouts return to those areas and houses where the bags/flyers were distributed to collect the donations. Donated items are then taken to their local Goodwill donation site which was designated by the troop leader on the registration form. 3. Goodwill staff and volunteers will be present at the designated stores to receive and tally the donations. Girl Scouts may drop off donations as a troop, individually, or in small groups with their parents. When dropping off donations, it is very important to be sure to tell the Goodwill associate your troop number so the items are counted for the correct troop s total. 4. Following the completion of this project, each participating Girl Scout will receive a customized community service patch. One troop in Missouri and one troop in Kansas will each receive a certificate of achievement and a troop pizza party for the highest volume of donations collected! 2

3 DATES TO REMEMBER: March 28, 2015 Registration Deadline By April 11, 2015 Troops receive collection bags and flyers By April 18, 2015 Girl Scouts distribute flyers and collection bags in their target areas April 25, 2015 May 10 16, 2015 Collection and delivery day Girl Scouts collect donations and deliver them to their designated Goodwill donation center Goodwill announces results, delivers patches and other materials or prizes involved to participating Girl Scouts. Collection Territories and Publicity: Since Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri covers 47 counties in both states, we realize that not all communities and neighborhoods will be solicited for donations. Troops may wish to coordinate with each other to be as effective as possible, and prevent any overlap. Troops may actively publicize this project throughout their areas including their schools, churches and community centers. Goodwill is committed to assisting individual troops promote this drive in their areas however possible, including advertising and information on our website: Thank you for your interest in the Good Turn for Goodwill. Donated items collected during this event are processed for sale in our Goodwill Retail Stores, which in turn supports our local mission: To strengthen individuals, families and communities in need through the Power of Work. If you have any additional questions, please contact: The Goodwill Community Engagement Team Office: x 297 Cell: community@mokangoodwill.org 3

4 Good Turn for Goodwill FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Does my troop have to drop off their donations as a troop or can my Girl Scouts come independently at different times? Girl Scouts can drop off the donations as one group OR they can come individually OR in small groups with their parents. If the Girl Scouts come at different times, please make sure they tell a Goodwill representative their troop number when dropping off their donations so that their items are counted toward the troop s total. How does Goodwill keep track of the quantity of donations? We provide tally sheets for each Girl Scout to complete and turn in with the donations. Can my Girl Scouts drop off donations at different Goodwill Donation Sites? We ask that Girl Scouts only come to the Goodwill Donation Site that was chosen by the troop leader on the registration form. How many volunteers can I have helping my troop? Recruit as many volunteers to help out as you want. This is a great way to connect with your community contacts beyond the troop. How many bags/flyers do we distribute? Girl Scouts may distribute as many as they would like. Some troops just decide to clean out their own closets and bring their personal donations to Goodwill, and this is completely fine! Of course, we encourage each troop to be as active as possible, making it more likely to win a prize and a certificate noting their achievement for bragging rights! When do we begin collecting donations? The flyers will invite donors to have bagged donations out on the curb by 9:00 A.M. on April 25, 2015, so you may begin collecting at that time. What if a household donates a large item we are unable to transport? No problem! You DO NOT have to take any donation that is too big or that you are unable to transport to your designated donation site. Information will be on the flyers, or you may remind the donors that they may take large items directly to Goodwill. Only bagged donations will count toward the individual and troop tally. For additional questions, contact: The Goodwill Community Engagement Team Office: x297 Cell: community@mokangoodwill.org 4
