Food Waste Recycling Working with NISP

John Warren ABP Ltd Presented by Kevin Quigley Business Development Manager - JWarrenABP Ltd Who are we?. A family run business based at Hamsterley near Bishop Auckland with over 50 years experience in food and animal by-products recycling. The organisation is now managed by the third generation of the family on the original site. What do we do?. We offer a full collection and recycling service to the North East region for food waste and associated packaging to commercial, industrial and public sector organisations. We operate a mixed fleet of 30+ vehicles giving us the ability and flexibility to offer a daily collection service to our broad base of customers. We offer a range of recycling and waste treatment options that guarantees a non-landfill waste recovery solution to our business client base.

Past, Present and Future History & Experience J Warren ABP has historically provided its services to the collection and processing of fallen stock to the Agricultural community. We collect on a region wide basis and have a proven track record for high quality service levels and includes primarily same day collections. Food waste collection has become a natural area of organic growth for our business with our vehicle fleet being entirely suited to the secure and safe transportation of environmentally sensitive process by-products. Experienced staff are used to working with sensitivity on a wide range of premises to ensure that ABP s and food residues are collected in a timely and appropriate manner to minimise any negative environmental impacts. Strong and loyal customer base built on meaningful relationships and service- oriented delivery built over 50 years operating in the region.

Current Activities As an organisation we collect in excess of 30,000 tonnes annually of ABP s and Food waste. From our operating base in Hamsterley we collect, segregate, process and treat either through our own on site processes or transfer the residues after sorting to our waste processing partners. Collection services include: Segregated collection of Category 1, 2 & 3 Animal By-product material. Collection of Category 3 food waste. Collection of residual and packaged food waste. Collection of agricultural wastes. Collection of liquid food waste. General waste and recycling collections.

Current Activities Treatment & Recycling Options Hamsterley Site & Depot Permitted waste transfer facility. Licensed ABP treatment and Transfer Centre. Materials recovery centre. Permitted Incineration process. Partner provided treatment A number of animal rendering process are currently used with reserved capacity for the Warren organisation We utilise In-vessel composting (IVC) facilities in Co Durham and North Yorkshire. Less than 5% of our waste that we collect annually goes to Landfill facilities.

Future Key Development Plans Expansion of our existing collection business to offer an integrated food waste collection service to both the commercial sector and the public sector. Elements will include: Specialist collection vehicles which will offer a split body format for simultaneous collection of various recyclables including food waste and packaging. Expansion of liquid waste collection fleet. Provision of a new Anaerobic Digestion Facility at Newton Aycliffe Business Park which will be trading as Emerald Biogas Ltd and available in summer 2011.

Food Waste Problems & Opportunities What is the size of the Food Waste sector in the UK? Wrap's study in 2009 entitled Household Food and Drink Waste in the UK estimates the size of the Household Food waste at 8.3 million tonnes annually or 330kgs per household per annum. This equates to between 25% and 32% of the annual household waste arisings. Conservative estimates show a further 12 million tonnes is generated from commercial, industrial and public sector sources in the United Kingdom annually. What are the legislative background & drivers for change?: DEFRA have a current consultation on the potential banning of organic waste to Landfill. EU Landfill Directive target for the diversion of biodegradable to 35% of the 1995 level by 2020 sets the imperative need for new technological solutions in the short to medium term. UK Renewable Energy Strategy 2009 (DECC). 30% of our power requirements by renewable means by 2020 (5.5% currently) 15% of our heat requirements by renewable means by 2020.

Working with NISP J JWarrenABP Ltd and NISP have collaborated in a number of areas including: Identification of suitable feedstock's for Anaerobic Digestion. Analysis of suitable substrates from the commercial and industrial sector which will benefit the client and treatment process. NISP has brokered relationship between Local food manufacturers and distributors and Emerald Biogas Ltd which will lead to sustainable waste treatment of a wide range of food processing by products including industrial effluents. Current projects between NISP and Emerald Biogas are looking at further treatment of packaging from mixed waste feedstock's of the AD process.

Food Waste Solutions Current waste treatment routing for food waste streams utilised by the J Warren ABP Ltd.

Emerald Biogas Ltd Anaerobic Digestion Facility Where is the facility? Newton Aycliffe Business Park. What is the Process? Anaerobic Digestion is the biodegradation of organic waste matter in the absence of oxygen by facultative anaerobic bacteria which produces methane, carbon dioxide and digestate ( liquid fertilizer). The process will operate in a mesophillic range between 38C and 42C. Planned inputs: Commercial, industrial, municipal and agricultural organic feedstock's.

Anaerobic Process Methane produced during breakdown of biodegradable waste is captured Used to fuel engines to generate renewable energy Process also produces nutrient-rich fertiliser Forms significant part of UK s renewable energy and landfill diversion strategies AD versus Composting All solutions have pros and cons Co-mingling bio-waste has been a common solution - segregation enables greater value to be extracted and more beneficial end uses Doesn t help meet renewable energy targets More secure demand for energy than compost

Capacity & Features: Phase 1 of 2 equal phases will deliver a capacity for 63,000 tonnes of waste and energy crops. Renewable energy outputs at peak of 16,155 MWH of green electricity and 16,555 MWH of heat. The process will deliver 53,000 tonnes p.a. of liquid fertilizer (digestate) to the local agriculture sector. The process features a state of the art de-packaging system to produce recyclable products or at worst a refuse derived fuel ( RDF) Extended opening hours on an industrial park gives high degree of flexibility to customers allowing for wider waste collection and delivery.

Key Benefits of this Process First commercial scale Anaerobic Digestion plant in the North East capable of treating a full range commercial, industrial, municipal and agricultural organic waste streams. Production of significant renewable energy in the form of both heat and power in an industrial location ensuring a closed-loop approach to the recycling process. A significant contribution in Co Durham to meeting renewable energy targets within the North East economy. Potential for Local Authorities and other Public Sector service providers to divert significant biodegradable waste from Landfill. Significant cost savings in the marketplace for waste treatment particularly within the backdrop of a Landfill Tax escalator programmed to 72.00/tonne by 2013.

Key Benefits of the process Production of up to 53,000 tonnes of agriculturally beneficial digestate which will be utilised within a 10km radius of the AD treatment facility. This material will comply with the PAS 110 protocol for Anaerobically digested wastes. Local farming agreements are in place to produce energy break crops for the process and use the digestate in producing these feedstock's. Local Employment 20 jobs in total either directly or indirectly created or safe-guarded by the project. Carbon Footprint reduction for Waste Producers as set against their environmental impact reduction targets
