Color Theory

Hue This is what we usually mean when we ask "what color is that?" The property of color that we are actually asking about is "hue". For example, when we talk about colors that are red, yellow, green, and blue, we are talking about hue. Different hues are caused by different wavelengths of light. Hue= Color

Primary Colors Red, Yellow, Blue. These 3 colors are the base colors for every other color on the color wheel. This is why they're called "primary."

Secondary Colors Orange, Green, Purple. These 3 colors are what you get when you mix the primary colors together.

Intermediate or Tertiary These are those "in-between" colors like Yellow-Green and Red-Violet. They're made by mixing one primary color and one secondary color together. There can be endless combinations of tertiary colors, depending on how they're mixed.

Monochromatic If you take a basic hue from the color wheel and use it and only its various tints and shades.

Complementary Red and Green, Blue and Orange, Purple and Yellow. These are the colors directly across from each other on the color wheel. They're called "complementary" because, when used together, they become extremely vibrant and have heavy contrast.

Triadic This ones a bit complicated and hard to conceptualize: but basically there are two schemes of three tertiary colors that are equidistant (Draw a equilateral triangle on the color wheel.) A basic Triadic scheme is when three colors are equidistant on the wheel

Analogous Red and Orange, Blue and Green, etc. These are colors right next to each other on the color wheel. They usually match extremely well, but they also create almost no contrast. They're good for very serene-feeling designs and artwork where you want viewers to feel comfortable.

Neutral Black, White, Gray, tan and Brown. These aren't on most color wheels, but they're considered neutral because they don't contrast with much of anything..

Warm Colors such as red, yellow, and orange. These colors evoke warmthbecause they remind us of things like the sun or fire. They are vividin nature. They are boldand energetic. Warm colors are those that tend to advancein space; therefore, caution needs to be taken so you do not overwhelm your content with eye catching hues. If an element in your design needs to pop out, consider using warm colors to do that.

Cool Colors like blue, green, and purple(violet). These colors evoke a coolfeeling because they remind us of things like water or grass. are soothing in nature. They give an impression of calmand rarely overpower the main content or message of a design. Cool colors tend to recede; therefore, if some element of your design needs to be in the background, give it cool tones.

Tint A hue produced by the addition of white.

Shade A hue produced by the addition of black.

Tone A hue produced by the addition of gray.

Value When we describe a color as "light" or "dark", we are discussing its value or "brightness". This property of color tells us how light or dark a color is based on how close it is to white.

Intensity The brightness or dullness of a hue. One may lower the intensity by adding white or black.

RGB This is color based upon light. Your computer monitor and television use RGB. The name "RGB" stands for Red, Green, Blue, which are the 3 primaries (with green replacing yellow). By combining these 3 colors, any other color can be produced. Remember, this color method is only used with light sources; it does not apply to printing.

CYMK This is the color method based upon pigments. "CMYK" stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (its what the K stands for). Using these 4 colors, most other colors can be achieved. Unfortunately, CMYK cannot reproduce the same amount of colors as RGB can, which is why yellow-greens sometimes look a bit muddy when printed. This is the method used by printers the world over, and is also a clever way of mixing paints.

### At the core of this relationship there are the three primary pigment colours RED, YELLOW and BLUE, which cannot be mixed from other colour elements.

The Colour Wheel The colour wheel is designed so that virtually any colours you pick from it will look good together. Over the years, many variations of the basic design have been made, but the most common
