Agenda What is a capacity building grant? What types of projects can be implemented through capacity building grants? Who gives funds for capacity building? What s different about writing a capacity building grant proposal? Tips for framing and highlighting your organizational needs
What is a Capacity Building Grant? Capacity building is a broad term that encompasses "actions that improve nonprofit effectiveness", in terms of organizational financial stability, program quality, and growth. Barbara Blumenthal, author of Investing in Capacity Building: A Guide to High-Impact Approaches (Foundation Center, 2003)
What is a Capacity Building Grant? A grant that helps an organization to carry out its mission effectively.
What is a Capacity Building Grant? Capacity building can take many forms, such as: Professional development for staff and board members Opportunities for peer learning, networking or leadership development Creating or re-examining organizational plans Initiating collaboration with other nonprofits Developing new sources for earned income Utilizing pro bono support for high-impact projects
Capacity Building Projects and Programs Capacity Building Projects include activities that grow the following:

Capacity-building grants are meant to strengthen solid organizations, not perform CPR on those that are failing. These grants are meant to make good organizations better, said Floersch. You ve got to start from a position of strength.
Funding for Capacity Building Many foundations and government funders give capacity building grants Some foundations require that you are a currently funded organization To determine the types of activities that can be funded, review the funder guidelines

Difference In Nature Capacity Building is NOT for the expansion of services Does not provide services to a population It is an internal activity
Framing and Highlighting your Need Organizational Capacity Tool Available at:
The Organizational Capacity Tool: 1. Is our vision clear? 2. How strong is our mission? 3. Does our mission guide our daily work? 4. Do we have a plan of action to achieve our goal, vision and mission? 6. Do we have the right people and skills to fundraise effectively? 7. And many more..
