2 VIDEO PRODUCTION III I. COURSE DESCRIPTION Video Production III is a full year course of study designed to further develop the skills learned in Video Production I and Video Production II. Students will be responsible for a full level of production and editing skills by concentrating on specific pre-production, production and post production duties and responsibilities. They will develop a true industry work environment as a combined Junior / Senior crew for both studio and remote video productions as required. II. COURSE OBJECTIVES/OUTLINE A. Identify all safety related items associated with video production and the video production shop. (S9.1) 1. Electrical outlets, breakers and power chords, and their inspection. 2. Cleaning chemical utilization and proper storage 3. Handling of shop ladders and lighting grid components 4. Computer and server cautions 5. Emergency procedures such as fire and lock downs B. Demonstrate the proper handling of television production gear and related cables and connectors. (S9.1) 1. The camera, tripod and components 2. The studio communications equipment 3. The teleprompter system and components 4. The lighting grid and instruments 5. The video production switcher 6. The video graphics generator 7. The audio components C. Determine field or studio production or a combination of both (based on the requirements of the story/script, and set up a location or studio schedule based on those specific needs. (S9.1) 1. Based on discussion of production requirements to use studio / field 2. Budget considerations 3. Facilities availability 4. Talent or subject availability 5. Discussions with client or group requesting production D. Understand the various methods in a video production that involve the use of graphic arts and digital photography. (S9.1) 1. Concept and use of video character generator 2. Use of 3 rd party software such as Photoshop and Inscriber
3 3. Scanned art, photographs, other grapic art materials 4. Utilization of digital still cameras and picture composition 5. Utilization of video camera to capture still art E.. Go out on assigned shoots: (S9.1) 1. Determine the correct compliment of equipment for either studio of field 2. Complete a site survey of field location (if it is to be shot in the field) 3. Determine if any graphics or other materials can be or should be used in the production 4. Block and rehearse prior to shooting in class room or studio 5. Schedule with studio manager studio use or field production equipment requirements 6. Properly slate and shoot story 7. Properly log and notate all good footage for capture into the AVID Media Composer editing system 8. Capture according to AVID Media Composer editing system requirements 9. Utilizing the AVID Media Composer editing system assemble programs as determined by staff approvals a. organizing and determining work flow for projects b. preparing materials for insertion into time line c. utilizing audio tools for proper levels d. utilizing footage contained from other bins e. utilizing dissolves, fades and other transition effects both video and audio f. importing files from other media g. managing media files and their related tools h. viewing and marking footage i. working in trim mode j. exporting and output options k. customizing your keyboard functions l. saving your work and exiting 10. Dump finished project to DVD for display and storage F. Specialize in at least one of the following; (S9.1) 1. all aspects of the pre-production planning process. 2. all aspects of the video production process 3. all aspects of the post-production editing process G. Design and duplicate completed projects on DVD (S9.1) 1. Design via printing software labels for DVD s 2. Transfer and record projects onto DVD duplicator and or disc. Recorder. 3. Duplicate projects for distribution to other shops or individuals as per job requirements. III. TEXTBOOKS AND INSTRUCTIONS MATERIALS Video Basics 5 th edition Herbert Zettl;Thomson Wadsworth, Belmont,CA 2004 (Includes teacher edition, Video Basics Workbook and CD Rom Video Lab 3.0. AVID Media Composer manuals.
4 IV. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES A variety of teaching methods will be utilized in the delivery of this course work. The primary method will be for students to be placed into production groups which will function as teams able to fully execute all aspects of a video production from inception to final duplication. They will be guided and instructed as required by the productions. They will be shown how to fine tune their skills and methods utilizing examples, demonstrations and field experiences. V. EVALUATION Students will be evaluated utilizing the following criteria: 1. Attendance 2. Participation in all aspects of class 3. Maintaining time line requirements of assigned productions 4. Quality of all productions completed 5. Progression of learned skills via demonstrations VI. STUDENT HANDOUT COURSE OVERVIEW PASSAIC COUNTY TECHNICAL INSTITUTE VIDEO PRODUCTION III Video Production III s a full year course of study designed to develop in depth the skills learned in Video Production II. Students will continue to enhance their skills by real world assignments and deadlines. There will be additional studies in graphic arts as well as digital photography. Through actual studio and field production assignments the students will gain a broad understanding of preproduction planning, video production and video post production.. PROFICIENCIES 1. Explain the importance of operating all equipment in or out of the studio safely. (S9.1) 2. Be able to demonstrate the proper handling of television production equipment used in both studio and remote productions. (S9.1) 3. Be able to determine if field or studio productions are required based on script and or story development. Develop a shooting schedule. (S 9.1) 4. Be able to utilize graphic arts, digital photography and character generator as required by the story board and or shooting scripts. (S9.1) 5. Be able to go out on shooting assignments with full knowledge of hardware and familiarity with location as well as properly document via slates and take sheets all video activity. (S9.1) 6. Be able to edit utilizing the AVID Media Composer software and it s basic software requirements. (S9.1) 7. Be able to design labels and duplicate DVD s of completed video projects. for both studio and or on location productions. (S9.1)
