1 PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 SUMMARY SECTION A. Provide painting and coating as shown and specified. Work includes: 1. Coating system materials, including sealers, primers, stains, fillers, emulsions, enamels, and other applied materials used as prime, intermediate and finish coats and the application of these materials. 2. Surface preparation, prime, intermediate and finish coatings for interior new and existing scheduled surfaces and items. 3. Touch-up and finish painting of exposed shop primed metal decking, cold-formed metal framing, metal fabrications, metal doors and doorframes and access panels. B. Paint exposed surfaces, except where the paint schedules indicate that a surface or material is not to be painted or is to remain natural. If the paint schedules do not specifically mention an item or a surface, paint the item or surface the same as similar adjacent materials or surfaces whether or not schedules indicate colors. If the schedules do not indicate color or finish, the Architect/Engineer will select from standard colors and finishes available. 1. Painting includes field painting of exposed bare and insulated covered pipes and ducts (including color coding), hangers, exposed steel and ironwork, and primed metal surfaces of HVAC and electrical equipment. C. Do not paint prefinished items, concealed surfaces, finished metal surfaces, operating parts, and labels. 1. Prefinished items include the following factory-finished components: a. Wood casework. b. Wood doors. c. Acoustical ceiling panels. d. Elevator entrance doors and frames. e. Elevator equipment. f. Factory finished HVAC and electrical equipment. g. Light fixtures. h. Distribution cabinets. 2. Concealed surfaces include walls or ceilings in the following generally inaccessible spaces: a. Furred areas. b. Ceiling plenums. c. Pipe spaces. d. Duct shafts. e. Elevator shafts. 3. Finished metal surfaces include the following: a. Anodized aluminum. b. Stainless steel. c. Chromium plate. d. Copper. e. Bronze and brass. 4. Operating parts include moving parts of operating equipment and the following: a. Valve and damper operators. b. Linkages. c. Sensing devices. d. Motor and fan shafts. 5. Labels: Do not paint over Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Factory Mutual (FM), or other coderequired labels or equipment name, identification, performance rating, or nomenclature plates

SSPC Volume 2 "Systems and Specifications." 1.3 DEFINITIONS A. General: Standard coating terms defined in ASTM D 16 apply to this Section. 1. Flat refers to a lusterless or matte finish with a gloss range below 15 when measured at an 85- degree meter. 2. Eggshell refers to low-sheen finish with a gloss range between 5 and 20 when measured at a 60- degree meter. 3. Satin refers to low-sheen finish with a gloss range between 15 and 35 when measured at a 60- degree meter. 4. Semigloss refers to medium-sheen finish with a gloss range between 30 and 65 when measured at a 60-degree meter. 5. Full gloss refers to high-sheen finish with a gloss range more than 65 when measured at a 60- degree meter. 1.4 SUBMITTALS A. Submit a complete schedule identifying manufacturer and specific brand name or number of products proposed for finishing specified surfaces. B. When requested, submit the following: 1. Paint label analysis for each paint material required. Indicate: a. Pigment materials and percent of each by weight. b. Vehicle materials and percent of each by weight. c. Percentages of ingredients shall add up to 100 percent. 2. Application instructions for each paint material required. C. When requested, submit a complete range of paint color samples for color selection

3 D. Before beginning work, prepare duplicate samples on actual materials for Architect/Engineer's review of color and texture. Provide complete finish on one-half of surface, successive applications required to produce finish on other half. Label and identify sample locations and applications. Sample size: 12" x 12". Use representative colors when preparing samples for review. Resubmit until required sheen, color and texture are accepted. Include the following: 1. Concrete: Provide two 4" x 4" samples for each color and finish. 2. Concrete masonry: Provide two 4" x 8" samples with mortar joint in the center, for each color and finish. 3. Stained or natural wood: Provide two 4" x 8" samples on specified wood for each type of natural and stained wood finish required. 4. Painted wood: Provide two 12" x 12" samples on specified wood for each color and finish. 5. Gypsum board: Provide two 12" x 12" samples for each color and finish. 6. Ferrous and zinc-coated metal: Provide two 4" x 4" samples of flat metal and two 8" long samples of solid metal for each color and finish. 7. Items as directed by Architect/Engineer. E. Submit manufacturer's and installer's certification that paint materials supplied for project use comply with specification requirements. 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Single source responsibility: Provide block fillers, primers and undercoat paint produced by the same manufacturer as the finish coats. B. Application: Performed only by skilled, experienced painters. C. Provide lead free prime and finish coatings. All top coatings shall be mold and mildew resistant. D. Field quality control: Before starting painting work, finish a sample area designated by the Architect/Engineer. Finish the area in accordance with specification requirements for applicable substrate surfaces and items, for Architect/Engineer's acceptance of materials, finishes, colors and workmanship. When accepted, the area shall serve as project standard for painting work. 1. Paint wall and ceiling surfaces not smaller than 100 sq. ft. 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Deliver materials in manufacturer's original, unopened labeled containers. B. Store materials in a single, suitable location. Store, protect and handle materials in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations to prevent damage and deterioration. Store paint materials at minimum temperature of 50 degrees F. C. Maintain paint material storage space clean, non-hazardous and orderly. Place waste and soiled paint rags in tightly covered metal containers; safely dispose of at end of each working day. Take every precaution to avoid fire hazards and spontaneous combustion. Provide acceptable type of fire extinguisher immediately adjacent to paint storage area. 1.7 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. A complete schedule of finishes and colors will be provided by the Architect/Engineer before beginning painting work. B. Coordinate painting and finishing work with other trades to ensure adequate illumination, ventilation and dust-free environment during application and drying of paint and finish treatments

4 C. Comply with material manufacturer's recommended temperature and environmental limitations for painting and finishing applications. 1. Apply paint and finish materials only when temperature of surfaces to be finished and surrounding air temperatures are between 50 and 90 degrees F, except as otherwise permitted by manufacturer's printed directions. D. Provide necessary protection, enclosures and temporary heat and ventilation during inclement weather to permit proper application and drying of paint coatings and finishing treatments. E. Maintain uniform interior building temperature of minimum 65 degrees F. and humidity of 20%-40% for 24 hours before, during and continuously after painting. F. Provide adequate ventilation as required for specified paint and finish treatment materials in spaces scheduled. Maintain for time periods recommended by material manufacturer to provide proper drying. G. Provide adequate illumination on surfaces to be finished. Maintain a minimum 15 foot-candle lighting level. 1. Protect adjoining surfaces against damage or soiling. H. Maintain work in neat and orderly condition, promptly removing empty containers, wrappings, soiled rags, waste and rubbish from site. I. Coordinate access into occupied building areas with the University. J. Verify location and extent of acoustical ceiling systems required for the work. 1.8 MAINTENANCE A. Furnish extra paint materials from the same production run as the materials applied in the quantities described below. Package paint materials in unopened, factory-sealed containers for storage and identify with labels describing contents. Deliver extra materials to the University. 1. Provide one gallon of paint and one quart of wood stain of each type and color required for maintenance purposes. Provide original, unopened, labeled containers with color samples and a list of project use. 2. Allow for a minimum of seven (3) different paint colors and two (2) different wood stain colors. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Paint: Sherwin-Williams Co. (SW), or equal products by Benjamin Moore & Co. (Moore); ICI Dulux Paint (ICI); PPG Industries Inc. (PPG) or Pratt & Lambert Inc. (P&L) 2.2 MATERIALS A. Material Compatibility: Provide block fillers, primers, undercoats, and finish-coat materials that are compatible with one another and the substrates indicated under conditions of service and application, as demonstrated by manufacturer based on testing and field experience. B. Material Quality: Provide manufacturer's best-quality paint material of the various coating types specified. Paint-material containers not displaying manufacturer's product identification will not be acceptable. 1. The acceptance of equal products shall be based on quantitative analysis criteria described in the project submittal requirements and certified by the proposed paint manufacturer

5 2. Color pigments: Pure, non-fading, applicable types to suit substrates and service indicated. Provide pigments fully ground, maintaining a soft paste consistency in the vehicle during storage, readily and uniformly dispersed by paddle to a complete homogeneous mixture ready for use. 3. Provide base and intermediate coat products compatible with finish coat and as produced by manufacturer of finish coat. 4. Provide ready-mixed paint, except for field catalyzed coatings. Job mixing and tinting of paint not acceptable, except as directed by Architect/Engineer. 5. Paint materials shall have good flowing and brushing properties, dry or cure free of streaks or sags and yield desired finish specified. C. Match colors indicated by reference to manufacturer's color designations. D. Colors: Provide color selections made by the Architect. E. Paint accessory materials: Provide linseed oil, shellac, thinners, or other accessory materials required for the work. Use only materials of best quality, approved by paint manufacturer and used within paint manufacturer's recommended limits. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine substrate surfaces and installation conditions. Do not proceed with painting work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. B. Installation constitutes acceptance of existing conditions and responsibility for satisfactory performance. C. Examine specification Sections for other trades and their provisions regarding painting. Surfaces left unfinished shall be painted or finished as part of the work of this Section unless specifically noted otherwise. D. Review other Sections in which primers are provided to ensure compatibility of the total system for various substrates. On request, furnish information on characteristics of finish materials to ensure use of compatible primers. 1. Notify the Architect/Engineer about anticipated problems using the materials specified over existing substrates and shop primed substrates primed. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Remove or protect during painting, finish hardware, accessories, mechanical grilles and louvers, electrical plates, fixtures and similar items installed before painting and not required to be painted. Store, clean and replace on completion of painting work in each area. B. Provide shields, protective coverings and drop cloths. Protect floors and adjacent work and materials. Remove and properly replace temporary protection and coverings removed from any part of the work or finish. Repair damage at Contractor's expense. C. Clean and prepare substrate surfaces in accordance with manufacturer's instructions for each particular substrate condition. Remove oil and grease before mechanical cleaning. Clean and correct defects and deficiencies in substrate surfaces to be painted before applying paint or finish treatments. 1. Provide barrier coats over incompatible primers or remove and reprime. D. Do not paint over dirt, rust, scale, grease, oil, moisture, marred surfaces, mildew or other conditions detrimental to formation of a durable paint film

6 E. Mildew removal: Scrub surfaces with tri-sodium phosphate and bleach solution, rinse with clean potable water and allow to thoroughly dry. F. Aluminum: Remove oil, grease, dirt, oxide and other foreign materials by wiping, etching, or scrubbing with brushes, or degrease and clean in accordance with SSPC-SP1-63 Solvent Cleaning. Let dry and then immediately prime paint. G. Cementitious materials: Prepare surfaces of concrete, concrete masonry and other cementitious materials by removing efflorescence, chalk, laitance, dust, dirt, grease and oil. Allow cementitious materials to cure and dry not less than 14 days before proceeding with surface preparation. Roughen surfaces as required to remove glaze. 1. Verify alkalinity and moisture content of surfaces by performing appropriate tests. Correct alkaline conditions detrimental to finish coatings. Do not paint over surfaces where moisture content exceeds paint manufacturer's recommendations. 2. Wash vertical surfaces with commercial acid etch solution, rinse with clean potable water and allow to dry thoroughly. 3. Clean concrete floor surfaces with commercial acid etch solution, rinse with clean potable water and allow to dry thoroughly. Restrict surface traffic, after treatment, until painted. 4. Fill surface pock marks, honeycomb, hairline cracks and voids. Smooth joints, fins and rough surfaces to provide surface suitable for proper adhesion of finish coatings. H. Ferrous and zinc-coated metals: Clean metal surfaces by solvent or mechanical cleaning. Remove oil, grease, dirt, loose mill scale and other foreign materials. 1. Touch-up damaged, field welded and bare areas of shop applied prime coats. Touch-up with metal primer compatible with shop primer and finish coats. 2. Remove shoulders at edge of sound paint to prevent photographing through finish coats. 3. Remove dirt and grease on galvanized surfaces scheduled for paint finish with solvent or chemical washes. Wipe dry with clean cloths. I. Plaster: Remove dust, dirt and loose coatings and other foreign material. 1. Allow plaster to dry not less than 14 days before proceeding with surface preparation. Neutralize high alkali surfaces. 2. Fill hairline cracks, holes and other defects with spackle or patching plaster. Smooth to match adjacent surfaces. J. Gypsum board: Remove dust, dirt, loose coatings and other foreign material. Fill hairline cracks, holes and other defects with filler compatible with finish treatment. Sand smooth. K. Wood: Remove dust, dirt and grit. Clean soiled wood surfaces. Sand exposed surfaces to smooth even surface and dust clean. 1. After priming, fill nail holes, cracks, open joints and other defects with filler compatible with finish treatment. Sand filler smooth, ready for finish coats. L. Existing surfaces scheduled for painting or finishing. 1. Condition, clean, sand, prime, seal and prepare existing surfaces as required for application of finish materials. Except where condition or type of surface requires priming or sealing, provide finish coats only over existing surfaces. Provide finish materials for existing surfaces same as new surfaces and as scheduled under Paint Materials Schedule. 2. Where existing finish material texture, sheen, or gloss varies from specified finish, obtain Architect/Engineer's acceptance of desired finish treatment before painting. 3. Remove loose, blistered, scaled, or crazed finish to bare base material. 4. Where new work joins existing work, prepare existing surfaces extending to the nearest break in the plane. Wash surfaces as required to remove accumulated film of wax, oil, grease, smoke or other foreign matter which would impair bond of, or bleed through, new finishes. After washing, rinse with potable water and let thoroughly dry

7 5. After washing and rinsing, wipe existing interior semi-gloss or high gloss surfaces with a liquid deglosser or acceptable surface preparation material. 6. Existing interior wood: Sandpaper smooth or use liquid deglosser to remove gloss and provide a "tooth" for finish bonding. Prime bare spots with primer specified for new work. Fill cracks and other irregularities, color filler material to match stain for transparent finishes. 7. Existing plaster: Fill minor cracks and defects with spackle, fill large cracks and defects with patching plaster. Acid wash or neutralize high alkalinity or "hot spots." Prime all bare, filled and patched plaster with primer-sealer specified for new plaster. 8. Existing gypsum board: Fill defects and damaged areas with vinyl base spackle. Apply texture as required to match existing adjacent texture surfaces. Prime all bare and newly textured surfaces with primer-sealer specified for gypsum board. 9. Existing painted concrete and masonry: a. Surfaces with minor loose or blistered paint: Remove loose, flaking and blistered paint, clean as specified. Fill surface cracks with approved latex base filler. Apply primer-sealer over bare substrate and filled cracks. b. Multi-coated surfaces with major loose or blistered paint requiring complete paint removal. Remove paint down to bare substrate by sand-blasting, pressure methods, chemicals, or other acceptable methods. Fill contraction and structural cracks with a self-bonding filler or elastomeric sealant worked well into the cracks to prevent leaks, then wipe excess material from the surface. Apply a latex base or other acceptable prime and fill material to fill all defects and holes, wipe excess material off surface; let filler material dry for 24 hours minimum before applying primer. 10. Existing painted ferrous and zinc-coated metal: Sand rough edges of bare areas to featheredge at adjacent sound paint. Remove rust and loose paint to bare metal, solvent wash. Apply prime paint. 3.3 APPLICATION: GENERAL A. Mix, prepare and apply paint and finish treatment materials in accordance with manufacturer's directions. B. Apply paint and finish treatment materials with brush or roller. Spray application of materials permitted only when specifically indicated or acceptable to Architect/Engineer. 1. Rate of application shall not exceed manufacturer's surface involved. Apply each coat of proper consistency. 2. Provide each coat of paint of slightly different color. Each coat shall be inspected by Architect/Engineer and shall be accepted before application of succeeding coats. Only inspected and accepted coats of paint will be considered in determining number of coats applied. 3. Keep brushes and rollers clean, free from contamination and suitable for the finish required. 4. Comply with manufacturer's recommendations for drying time between succeeding coats. 5. Sand lightly between coats to achieve required finish. 6. Finished surfaces shall be uniform in finish and color and free of brush marks, sagging, holidays, corduroy and other imperfections. If a coat is judged unsatisfactory, sand or otherwise clean off unsatisfactory coat and apply another coat. If undercoating is disturbed because of unsatisfactory coat removal, refinish surface completely. 7. Coverage and hide shall be complete. Apply additional coatings when undercoats, stains, or other conditions show through final coat of paint, until paint film is of uniform finish, color, appearance and coverage. 8. Finish film thickness: Apply materials at not less than the manufacturer's recommended spreading rate, to provide a total dry film thickness as scheduled. When not indicated, dry film thickness shall be as recommended by material manufacturer. C. Priming and backpriming interior wood products: 1. Surfaces scheduled to receive painted finish: Prime and backprime interior finish wood products, before their installation, with interior wood prime paint. After doors are fit to their frames, but before

8 installation, apply one coat of interior wood prime paint and one coat of interior finish paint to top and bottom edges. 2. Surfaces to receive clear or transparent stain and varnish finish: Wood interior standing and running trim, paneling and millwork (stain and varnish finishes): Backprime with resin sealer, as applicable to varnish system specified for finishing, before installation, to surfaces not normally exposed. Apply first coat of stain and filler specified to exposed faces, edges and ends before installation. After doors are fit to frame and stained and filled, apply two coats of resin sealer, as applicable to varnish system specified for finishing to top and bottom edges before installation. D. Filling open-grain wood product surfaces: 1. Fill open-grain wood product surfaces to reflect grain contours. 2. Tint filler to match stain; work filler well into grain and, before it has set, wipe the excess from the surface. E. Tops, bottoms and edges of metal doors shall be painted with same materials and number of coats as used on door faces. F. Edges of paint or finish adjoining other materials or colors shall be sharp and clean without overlapping. G. Mechanical and electrical equipment: 1. Refer to mechanical and electrical sections for tagging and identification banding of mechanical and electrical piping, ductwork and conduit. a. Finish paint factory primed equipment. 2. Paint exposed piping, pipe covering, pipe hangers and supports, ductwork, insulation, conduit and fittings in finished or occupied spaces except at mechanical and electrical rooms. 3. Paint access panels, electrical panels and other unfinished items which occur in or on ceilings or walls to match adjacent surfaces. When panels and items occur in unpainted surfaces, paint as directed by Architect/Engineer. Remove access panel doors and covers before painting walls or ceilings, paint separately and reinstall when all paint is dry. 4. Paint mechanical and electrical devices mounted in or on ceilings or walls to match adjacent surfaces, except factory finished items. 5. Paint interior surfaces of air ducts, convector and baseboard heating cabinets that are visible through grilles, registers and louvers with one coat of flat non-specular black paint to the limit of sight line. Paint dampers exposed immediately behind louvers, grilles, convector and baseboard cabinets to match face panels. H. Field touch-up painting: Provide proper surface preparation for new and existing materials to receive paint coatings. 1. Provide field touch-up painting of metal decking, cold-formed metal framing, metal fabrications, metal doors and doorframes and access doors after erection. 2. Touch-up welds, fasteners and abrasions to the shop coating, in addition to finish painting, utilizing zinc rich primers for galvanized materials and zinc chromate primers for ferrous metals. 3.4 APPLICATION: INTERIOR PAINT AND FINISH MATERIALS A. Paint and finish walls and ceilings of scheduled finished spaces. 1. Mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, telephone rooms, elevator equipment rooms and similar spaces. Finish as scheduled. 2. Verify extent of acoustical ceiling systems provided under Section Paint exposed metal ceiling decking and structure with spraying flat white finish. 4. Finish alcoves, recesses and closets, not specified otherwise, with same treatment as scheduled for adjacent areas. 5. Finish wall surface back of such items as open shelving and exposed heating units, with same treatment as balance of wall

9 6. Paint access doors and panels and other unfinished panels that occur in walls to match the surface in which they are mounted. If panels occur in the unpainted surfaces, paint as directed by Architect/Engineer. B. Finish returns, edges and recesses exposed in finished work to match adjoining work. C. Paint and finish exposed interior concrete and concrete masonry. D. Paint and finish exposed interior metals, including doors, doorframes, metal fabrications and all unfinished, shop primed or galvanized finish ferrous metals. 1. Paint unfinished and factory primed plumbing, HVAC and electrical work, including registers, grilles, piping, ductwork, conduit and equipment, except at mechanical and electrical rooms, as directed by Architect/Engineer. E. Paint and finish interior gypsum board walls and ceilings. F. Paint and finish interior wood. 1. Provide clear transparent varnish finish for standing and running wood trim. 2. Provide opaque painted finish for shelving and trim at closet, service and storage areas. 3. Verify extent of shop finished Architectural woodwork items provided under Section Provide applicable finish to unfinished items. 4. Wood doors provided under Section are factory finished. 3.5 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. During progress of the work and upon completion, promptly clean adjacent surfaces and materials of spills, spatters, drips and stains from painting application. Remove paint by proper methods exercising care to prevent damage to finished surfaces and materials. B. Protect work of other trades against damage resulting from painting and finishing work. Correct damage by cleaning, repairing or replacing and repainting as acceptable to the Architect/Engineer. C. Replace, clean and adjust finish hardware, accessories, mechanical grilles and louvers, electrical plates, fixtures and similar items removed for painting work. D. Touch-up damaged painted surfaces before final project acceptance. E. Perform cleaning during progress of the work and upon completion of the work. Remove from site excess materials, debris, tools and equipment. 3.6 INTERIOR PAINT AND FINISH MATERIALS SCHEDULE A. Apply paint and finish materials to substrate surfaces indicated. Apply touch-up prime coats in addition to shop-applied prime coats. Provide additional job site prime coats when indicated. B. Concrete ceilings, painted: 1 finish coat over primer with total dry film thickness not less than 8.0 mils. 1. Semi-Gloss acrylic finish: a. Primer: S-W PrepRite Masonry Primer, B28W300 b.
