ANNUAL REPORT SEPTEMBER 2012 AUGUST 2013
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Master of Health Management (MHM) program was established in September 2010 through a partnership between the DeGroote School of Business and the School of Rehabilitation Science, McMaster University. This annual report allows us to reflect on the past year, celebrate our accomplishments and plan for the future. BELOW IS A SUMMARY OF THE PAST YEAR S HIGHLIGHTS: Completion of the annual academic review revealed that our eight core competencies are adequately incorporated in the program s curriculum. Cohort 2011 received insightful learning from local health executives during the Spring 2013 residency. Dedicated faculty, staff and program partners continue to work cohesively in order to mount, deliver, and administer all aspects of the MHM program. A total of 20 McMaster faculty members served as advisors and/or readers for the 14 graduating students scholarly paper course. The program s administrative office was relocated to the DeGroote School of Business from the School of Rehabilitation Science. As of Fall Term 2012, enrollment in the MHM program had grown to 79 students. In Fall 2013, 45 students were accepted into the MHM program. Fall 2012 residency provided an opportunity for the new students of Cohort 2012 to get acquainted with each other, MHM Faculty and staff. The composition of the 2013 cohort represents continued diversity in profession and geographic area. November 2012 marked the first graduate of the MHM program with 13 more following in June Student excellence was recognized by the MHM program with the presentation of the Award of Excellence, the Scholarly Paper Award and the Community Contribution Award at convocation June During the Health Sciences Research Plenary, a MHM student received the Graduate Program Award. The MHM program gained additional exposure by being promoted on several educational and professional healthcare associations websites. In addition to traditional health care professions, recruitment was also focused on Medical Service Team members of the Canadian Forces. 1 Please join us in celebrating this past year s program achievements and milestones. For more details you are invited to read the entire document.
MEASURING CURRICULUM QUALITY The Master of Health Management (MHM) curriculum provides a foundation to enhance students business and management skills and knowledge applicable to their professional settings. Students follow a prescribed prospectus completing courses in health systems and policy analysis, evidence-based practices, management, accounting and finance, strategic planning and marketing, communications, and leadership. In the last year of the student s program, they write a scholarly paper on a topic relevant to the field of health management. 2 TITLES OF SCHOLARLY PAPERS : Success in Home Care: Balancing the needs of client, worker, and organization Burnout Among Healthcare Providers: Prevention and management Strategies for Building Surgeon Leadership Skills Capacity in Guyana Models of Home and Community Care Delivery: Do they support informal caregivers of dependent older persons living at home to ensure improved outcomes? 4 As an annual exercise and in preparation for participating in the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) reaccreditation in 2016, and the Ontario University Council on Quality Assurance (OUCQA) in 2017, we completed an academic review of the MHM program. This activity assessed how well the program s eight core competencies were integrated into each course. By reviewing student and instructor feedback as well as course content, the MHM Academic Review Committee concluded that core competencies are incorporated into and covered in each course. The MHM program will continue annual reviews to provide guidance for further program monitoring, evaluation and improvement. CORE COMPETENCIES Lifelong Learning Communication Skills Conceptual Skills Awareness of the Political and Healthcare Environment Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources Management Financial Management Research Awareness Leadership I want to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity of being a member of this distinguished initial group. The challenges and learning processes provided a very creative and worthwhile combination of health issues and business management/ leadership. The added depth of knowledge and understanding that this program provides for healthcare workers is invaluable. The practical application of research and theories was the core strength of the program. It was obvious in discussions with my classmates that their contributions to their workplace were significantly enhanced. Many career paths have been expanded by their added learning and increased confidence to accept exciting new opportunities. You have initiated something invaluable for all MHM students and indeed for the whole healthcare system across Canada. Thank you and 3 cheers. B. Ruttan, MHM Graduate
LEARNING FROM EXPERTS A unique feature of this online, interdisciplinary program is onsite residency in the fall and the spring. Although course learning is typically completed online, students are exposed to two on-campus in-class learning experiences. Students meet faculty members, participate in class presentations, and learn from experts and invited guests. 4 Cohort 2012 gathered Fall 2012 at the DeGroote School of Business Ron Joyce Centre in Burlington for a three day, on-site residency. Through ice breaker activities and an evening reception, new students were provided with the opportunity to get acquainted with each other, senior students, and MHM faculty and staff. McMaster librarians discussed and demonstrated library resources and their uses to students. At the Spring 2013 residency for Cohort 2011, Donna Cripps, Chief Executive Officer of the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network, and Brenda Flaherty, Executive Vice-President for Hamilton Health Sciences shared their personal experiences as leaders in a healthcare environment. Having gained a thorough understanding of healthcare delivery from both an operational and a strategic perspective, these seasoned managers (a nurse and a physiotherapist) provided anecdotal examples of the challenges and opportunities of leading in such an environment. I draw on many of the topics from MHM on a daily basis (evidenced based practice, management, quality/risk concepts, leadership, policy, reputation management, and marketing). In addition, I feel my writing ability has improved. Student team preparing for presentation Donna Cripps, CEO of Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network C. Gill, MHM Graduate 2013 Brenda Flaherty, Executive VP for Hamilton Health Sciences
WHO ARE OUR MHM FACULTY AND STAFF? Leadership of the MHM Program is shared by two Co-Directors, Dr. Mary Law from the School of Rehabilitation Science, and Dr. Patricia Wakefield from the DeGroote School of Business. The Executive Committee is composed of the Co-Directors plus two additional representatives: one from the DeGroote School of Business, Dr. Glen Randall; and, one from the School of Rehabilitation Science, Prof. Lynne Geddes. The program acknowledges and thanks a dedicated group of partners within the university and the community who, having an appointment with the MHM program, accept roles as course instructors, scholarly paper advisors, and/or scholarly paper readers. Behind the scenes, Michelle Benjamin, Program Manager, and Laura Jakubczyk, Administrative Assistant, run the day to day activities of the program. As planned, in July 2013, the administrative office of the program relocated to the DeGroote School of Business from School of Rehabilitation Science for a three year term. Thanks again for all of the work you have done on my behalf throughout the program. S. Ralph, MHM Graduate Lynne Geddes, Glen Randall, Mary Law, and Pat Wakefield
WHO ARE OUR MHM STUDENTS? The program continues to grow incrementally to reach our program target goal of accepting 45 students each fall. As of Fall 2012, a total of 79 students were registered in the MHM program. One student completed requirements early and graduated in November Each student cohort is unique in its composition, thereby bringing distinctive perspectives and experiences to class discussions and projects. The asynchronous online nature of this part-time degree program attracts varied healthcare professionals from across Canada as students are able to learn while balancing work and personal commitments. For the September 2013 class, we received applications from seven Canadian provinces. From this pool of applications, 45 students accepted offers of admission for the fall start, thereby meeting our enrollment target. The class is comprised of 18% men and 82% women. The 2013 cohort includes students from Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario and Alberta. Students backgrounds are summarized in the table on the right. Within the class, 22% of students work in private healthcare establishments and 78% work in publicly-funded healthcare organizations. 8 STUDENT MILESTONES November 16th, 2012 was an exciting day and milestone for both the MHM program and its first graduate, Stephanie Ralph! Although starting the program with the first cohort in September 2010, Stephanie chose to fast track her studies. Her classmates convocated on schedule at Hamilton Place on June 10th, Prior to the June convocation ceremony, the graduands and their guests enjoyed a reception at the Art Gallery of Hamilton to mark this momentous occasion. The program s Co-Directors, Pat Wakefield and Mary Law, welcomed our graduands and their guests; and presented three student awards. Barbara Ruttan received the Award of Excellence for the highest level of scholarly achievement in the Master of Health Management Program. We recognized Erin Miller with the Scholarly Paper Award for her paper entitled: Healthy Public Policy in Canada for Childhood Obesity: An examination of the policy environment surrounding the marketing of unhealthy food and beverages targeted at children. Nominated by peers, the Community Contribution Award was presented to Barbara Ruttan for providing outstanding leadership, support, and involvement. Classmates, Karen Graham and Joanne Guizzo described this year s recipient as...a leader and supporter, who was enthusiastic, resourceful, and sensitive with a flair for fun. Barbara Ruttan, recipient of the Award of Excellence, and Mary Law Patricia Wakefield, Erin Miller, recipient of the Scholarly Paper Award, and Lynne Geddes 7 I am enjoying my recent and very valuable knowledge, and plan to use it in my current role. My colleagues have been very grateful for the information I am able to share. H. Marrin, MHM Graduate 2013 Patricia Wakefield, Barbara Ruttan, recipient of the Community Contribution Award, Joanne Guizzo and Mary Law
SUCCESS - PRESENT AND FUTURE The high academic calibre of the MHM students was recognized at various venues on and off campus. 8 On campus during the Health Sciences Research Plenary, Caroline Gill (cohort 2010) presented in poster form her scholarly paper entitled: Success In Home Care: Balancing the needs of the older client, worker, and organization. At this same event, Barbara Ruttan (cohort 2010) received a Graduate Program Award. Additionally, Caroline Gill s poster was well received in June by conference attendees of the Ontario Association of Community Care Access Centres in Toronto. Some students have taken advantage of the strategic alliance between the Canadian College of Health Leaders and the MHM program to receive advanced standing towards earning their Certified Health Executive (CHE) designation while working on their MHM degree. To gain the attention of and engage with prospective students we use a three pronged marketing strategy in print, in person and online. Program information was sent to Healthcare Administration Officers (HAO) in the Canadian Forces at 29 medical and dental centres across Canada. Promotional materials were distributed to delegates at the following three conferences: HealthAchieve, Spring Neurobehavioural Rehab Acquired Brain Injury, and Ontario Gerontology Association. MHM program information is listed on a variety of professional healthcare and educational websites, increasing our presence from six websites to nineteen websites. Our program is represented from coast to coast to coast at provincial and national levels in seven regulated healthcare professions. Additionally, our academic information is contained in selected educational search engines and electronic educational catalogues. We plan to expand this list yearly. The marketing net is cast far and wide in order to attract the best and brightest candidates to the MHM program. We look forward to continued growth in the program. Faculty of Health Sciences Research Plenary: Prof. Lynne Geddes, Caroline Gill (Cohort 2010) and Dr. Catherine Connelly Mingling at Fall 2012 residency reception Essentially this program prepares you to walk through doors that may open in the future.
