1 KS1 Curriculum Evening
2 Reading One of the greatest problems for the beginning reader is that he cannot tell by watching what readers are actually doing. (Meek 1982)
3 A solid foundation in reading is crucial to your child s success as they progress through primary school, into secondary school and then in later life.
4 Our aims are to: Encourage children to develop a love of books and reading Teach children how to decode words using phonics and other strategies Give children the opportunity to talk about books that they have read Help children to develop the skills of deduction and inference ( reading between the lines )
5 Guided Reading In Guided Reading sessions children are encouraged to read independently and decode unfamiliar words using a variety of reading strategies. Guided reading provides a valuable opportunity to discuss the text and to acquire new vocabulary. Talking about what is read is as valuable as reading itself!

7 Reading at Home Reading to younger brothers and sisters Joining the library Bedtime stories Re-reading books Reading for a variety of purposes Listening to stories Let your child see you reading
8 Partnership We want to work together to help your child become a confident, fluent reader. We expect children to change their books regularly daily if possible. Children do sometimes take home a book they have read before. A second reading is not a waste of time. In fact, the new curriculum states that children should reread books to develop their fluency and confidence in word reading. Please write in title of book and sign. Let us know if there are any problems.
9 Grammar A requirement of the new curriculum Taught in year 1 and 2, sometimes as part of a writing topic, sometimes as stand alone lessons Children will learn and be expected to use grammatical terminology by the end of year 2, these include noun, noun phrase, statement, question, exclamation, command, compound, adjective, adverb, verb, tense (past, present).
10 We aim to make learning grammar enjoyable and age appropriate! Here is an example of game that teaches children about the job that nouns do in sentences: The swede was cycling through the cauliflower and enjoying himself. The pumpkin was shining brightly, the beans were singing in the broccoli and there were fluffy potatoes drifting slowly overhead. He hummed to himself as he cycled along, thinking about the peas and carrots that he had to deliver that celery. Can you replace the nouns so that this passage from the Jolly Postman makes sense?
11 Daily Phonics Sessions Children are taught to blend phonemes to read words and to segment words to spell. They learn to read and write tricky words.
12 Handwriting This year there is a whole school focus on presentation skills in line with the new curriculum. Handwriting is a key part of this.
13 EY pupils learn how to print letters. Year 1 will introduce cursive writing. All letters start from the line. Letters need to be uniform size, have clear ascenders and descenders. No looping. Weekly teaching focus with follow up practice sessions most days. We write in the air, on backs, whiteboards, sheets, and move into books.
14 Year 2 will be expected to start joining. Learning to write from the line makes the transition easier. Diagonal and horizontal joins (e.g.row in brown) are introduced. Regular teaching and practice sessions continue, along with specific handwriting books. Extra fine motor groups for those who need it.

We will stretch children by ensuring they are using their skills in addition to solve problems.

20 Subtraction Practically Counting back using a number line or a one hundred square Subtracting horizontally by partitioning and other informal written methods (empty number line) The New Curriculum does not expect children to subtract vertically during Key Stage One or work with three-digit numbers. We will stretch children by ensuring they are using their skills in subtraction to solve problems.

We are celebrating Harvest Festival on Friday 7 th October at St Mary s Church all welcome! Year 2 will be dressing up for Castles Day on Friday 14 th October.
